It was a cold day. I sat in my room writing letters. I glanced out of the

window. In the window directly opposite me, stood Heir Stroh, gazing

blatantly upon me. I was annoyed at his interest. I pulled down the blind and

switched on the light to continue my writing. I wondered if Herr Stroh had

seen me doing anything peculiar before I had noticed him, such as tapping my

head with the end of my pen or scratching my nose or pulling at my chin, or

one of the things one might do while writing a letter.

The drawn blind (опущенная штора) and the artificial light (и искусственно

освещение; artificial — искусственный, синтетический, фальшивый) irritated

me (раздражали меня; to irritate — раздражать, сердить), and suddenly I

didn't see why I shouldn't write my letters (и внезапно, я решила: «не увидела

почему», почему это я не должна писать письма) by daylight (при дневном

свете) without being stared at (и /чтобы при этом/ на меня не пялились; to stare

— пристально смотреть, уставиться). I switched off the light (я выключила

свет) and released the blind (и подняла штору; to release — освобождать,

выпускать, отпускать). Herr Stroh had gone (господина Строх не было:

«ушел»). I concluded (я сделала вывод; to conclude — завершать, заключать,

прийти к заключению) that he had taken my actions as a signal of disapproval

(что он воспринял мои действия как признак: «сигнал» неодобрения;

(dis)approval — (не)одобрение), and I settled back to write (и я снова уселась /и

продолжила/ писать; to settle — решать, договариваться, устраиваться,

усаживаться).

The drawn blind and the artificial light irritated me, and suddenly I didn't

see why I shouldn't write my letters by daylight without being stared at. I

switched off the light and released the blind. Herr Stroh had gone. I

I looked up a few moments later (я подняла взгляд через несколько

мгновений), and this time Herr Stroh was seated on a chair (в этот раз господин

«смотрел в лицо» меня) and holding to his eyes (и держал у глаз; to hold —

I left my room (я покинула свою комнату) and went down to complain to Frau

Lublonitsch (и пошла вниз пожаловаться фрау Люблонич; to complain —

жаловаться, выражать недовольство).

"She's gone to the market (она ушла на рынок; market — рынок, базар,

торговля)," Gertha said. "She'll be back in half an hour (она вернется через

полчаса).''

So I lodged my complain with Gertha (и так я пожаловалась: «подала свою

жалобу» Герте).

"I shall tell Frau Chef (я передам: «скажу» госпоже Хозяйке)," she said.

Something in her manner made me ask (что-то в ее манере заставило меня

спросить; to make smb do smth — заставить, вынуждать, побуждать кого-

то сделать что-то). "Has this ever happened before (это уже и раньше

случалось)?"

"Once or twice this year (один или два раза в этом году)," she said (сказала

она). "I'll speak to Frau Chef (я поговорю с госпожой Хозяйкой)." And she

added (и добавила), with her music-hall grimace (с опереточной гримасой /на

лице/; music-hall — мюзик-холл, концертный зал), "He was probably counting

your eyelashes (возможно, он пересчитывал ваши ресницы; to count —
