Speleotherapy as a form of alternative medicine

Salt therapy, halo therapy or speleotherapy is the therapeutic use of salt mines, caves or other forms of exposure to salt air to treat medical conditions. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, prescribed saltwater inhalation therapy for bronchial and lung disorders. Salt therapy consists of sitting in a room coated with salt crystals and pumped full of salt laden air.

Halo therapy has been used for respiratory diseases for centuries. European monks treated respiratory ailments in natural salt caves and noted that their patients got better faster. The monks would actually grind salt rocks against each other to create a salt dust that their patients inhaled. Halo therapy has actually been researched and has some significant findings. A study of 55 patients with bronchial asthma indicated that there was an increase of the number of T lymphocytes, a normalization of the number of B lymphocytes and increase of the level of IgA and a reduction of IgM content. These markers indicated significant improvement.

Twenty nine patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease had significant positive results including the improvement in lung function and blood pressure. Salt therapy has shown the capacity to decease microbial contamination of the upper respiratory tract and inhibit respiratory allergies. Two hundred and sixteen children with bronchial asthma were treated in conditions of salt mines. Good results were seen in atopic asthma, and chronic bronchitis. The therapy also noticeably diminished bronco obstructive syndrome and improved pulmonary ventilation. And these improvements were stable in most of the patients.

Another study focused on skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis. One hundred and twelve children underwent therapy and the results showed a positive trend.

There are even ways to create your own salt room in your home either by purchasing a salt pod, or turning a walk in closet into a salt room.

Апитерапия / Apitherapy

Apitherapy is the medicinal use of products made by honeybees. Products of the honeybee include bee venom, honey, pollen, royal jelly, propolis, and beeswax. Use of honey and other bee products can be traced back thousands of years. Their healing properties are included in many religious texts. Hippocrates recognized the healing virtues of bee venom for treating arthritis and other joint problems. Today, growing scientific evidence suggests that various bee products promote healing by improving circulation, decreasing inflammation, and stimulating a healthy immune response. A wide variety of conditions and diseases have been suggested as candidates for apitherapy, the most well known being Bee Venom Therapy (BVT) for autoimmune diseases and multiple sclerosis, arthritis, wounds, pain, gout, shingles, burns, tendonitis, and infections. The most abundant active component of the venom is melittin, which has a powerful anti inflammatory action. There is no standardized practice for the administration of bee venom. Some purport that the location of the sting is important, with the sting acting as a sort of acupuncture in combination with the effects of the venom, while others report the location is not important. The number of stings also varies widely from a few to hundreds and they may be administered either by live bees or by injection. This treatment can cause pain, and even result in death if the subject has an allergy to bee venom which can produce anaphylactic shock. The medical efficacy of bee hive product treatments (apitherapy) has not been approved by medical specialists yet. Some researchers are able to show results in the studies of BVT therapeutic effects using mice. However, studies in people have not been reported in the available medical literature.

Aromatherapy among complementary and alternative methods in medicine

ГБОУ ВПО Саратовский ГМУ им. В.И. Разумовского Минздрава России, кафедра иностранных языков

Научный руководитель: старший преподаватель Определеннова О.В.

Many of us take for granted the sense of smell. Yet many researches show that the human nose can distinguish over 10,000 different smells, which have various physiological and psychological effects.

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses essential oils from plants for healing. It is useful for relieving pain, stress and tension, for improving mood and promoting relaxation. Therapies using essential oils complement alternative medicine techniques such as acupuncture, massage therapy and reflexology.

Essential oils have been used for therapeutic purposes for nearly 6000 years. The ancient people used them in cosmetics, perfumes and drugs. They were also commonly used for spiritual, therapeutic, hygienic and ritualistic purposes.

Generally speaking, researchers are not entirely clear how aromatherapy may work. Some experts believe the "smell" receptors in your nose communicate with parts of your brain that serve as storehouses for emotions and memories. When you breathe in essential oil molecules, they stimulate these parts of your brain and influence physical, emotional, and mental health, or they interact in the blood with hormones or enzymes.

Compared to other healing techniques, aromatherapy is associated with relatively few risks or side effects. Aromatherapy oils can cause allergic reactions or sun sensitivity when rubbed directly in the skin. Some oils are toxic, and taking them orally in wrong dosages can be fatal. And, of course, it does not produce instant results.

The advantages of aromatherapy include safety, availability, relaxation and easy usage. It is a natural, non surgical and non invasive procedure.

Although there have been periods of persecution, decline and oblivion in the field of Russian aromatherapy, it is Russia where the notion “phytoncides” was invented by Boris Tokin, a famous Russian microbiologist, and many ideas of aromatherapy were improved by Russian professor, Vyacheslav Nikolaevskiy.

Nowadays, aromatherapy in Russia undergoes times of depression in the context of research projects. However, it is widely used by many people in everyday life. This process is not controlled by the State, and it can lead to serious health problems.
