Социальная адаптация - это сложное, многоаспектное явление, не сводимое ни к приспособлению, ни к социализации. Его разновидностью является социокульурная адаптация, которая представляет собой форму взаимоприспособления этнических групп к другой социо-культурной среде на основе обмена духовными практиками, возможностями и результатами деятельности. Она включает в себя три аспекта:

социально- психоологический, профессиональный и этнокультурный.

Этонокультурная адаптация в иной социокультурной среде происходит в формах ассимиляции и аккультурации. В первом случае человек (группа) принимает (добровольно или принудительно) ценности и нормы принимающей этнической среды. В новой среде мигранты, переселенцы как бы расстворяются. Тогда уже ни они себя, ни принимающая среда их не воспринимает как «чужаков», «иностранное меньшинство». По мнению большинства ученых, полная ассимиляция, расстворение может происходить лишь во втором, третьем поколении. Во втором случае сохраняются свои основные этнокультурные характеристики, но меньшинства принимают и следуют нормам и ценностям новой социокультурной среды.
