Note on orthography of the text - This part of the Reader features the text by the British author, the renown philosopher Karl Popper, published in the British magazine The Economist. Consequently, this part shows the British variant of the English orthography, in contrast to all the previous parts featuring the texts by American authors and, thus, showing the American orthographic variant.

Ostracism - 1) a method of temporary banishment by popular vote without trial or special accusation practiced in ancient Greece; 2) exclusion by general consent from common privileges or social acceptance.

For the claim ³| that the people have this right, ⁴| many and various reasons ¹ have been given ²... (p. 140) - 1) - подлежащее главного предложения, 2) сказуемое главного предложения, 3) дополнение к сказуемому в главном предложении, 4) определение к дополнению, выраженное придаточным предложением (what claim?).
