А. В історії британської політики переважно існувало дві головні партії. Спочатку у британській політиці домінували Торі й Віги (пізніше вони перетворилися на Консервативну й Ліберальну партії). У 1920 році Ліберальна партія втратила популярність й основним суперником консерваторів на виборах стала Лейбористська партія. Відтоді ці дві партії змінюють одна одну в уряді. Однак стверджувати, що система влади в Сполученому Королівстві ґрунтується на двопартійній системі, не можна, оскільки завжди існує третя за значенням партія (зараз це - ліберальні демократи), яка перешкоджає тому, аби одна єдина партія набрала більше половини голосів. Інші, другорядні, партії у виборах участь беруть, але до парламенту проходять нечасто.
Б. Консервативна партія є однією із найстаріших у світі. Головними принципами партії є сприяння розвитку приватної власності й підприємства, підтримка сильної військової та зовнішньої політики, збереження традиційних культурних цінностей. Зараз партія переживає внутрішній конфлікт щодо відносин Британії з Євросоюзом. Сьогодні консерватори перетворилися на партію, що представляє переважно підприємців і середній клас, хоча їх підтримує ще й третина робітничого класу, особливо у питаннях, що пов’язані з економічними інтересами. Лейбористська партія, що виникла з надр профспілок і соціалістичних організацій, намагалася ввести своїх представників до Парламенту для здійснення власних політичних інтересів. Згаданий зв’язок лейбористів з профспілками й досі є визначальною характеристикою партії. Хоча більшість її прихильників представляють робітничий клас, партію підтримують і вихідці із середнього класу, особливо освічені й професіонали. Історично партія є прихильником соціалізму й виступає за такі соціалістичні ідеї, як державна власність у головних галузях економіки, контроль економіки з боку уряду, перерозподіл доходів, розширення прав працюючих, соціальне забезпечення, державне фінансування охорони здоров’я й освіти. Сьогодні Лейбористська партія фінансується переважно профспілками і виступає за прийняття закону, який примусив би партії розголошувати джерела значних грошових внесків і заборонив би отримувати кошти із-за кордону.
