10.5. Модальный глагол need

Глагол need может употребляться как модальный и как смысловой. В качестве модального глагола need употребляется только в вопросительных и отрицательных предложениях и выражает необходимость или отсутствие необходимости выполнения какого-либо действия.

You needn’t defend yourself.	Вам не нужно оправдываться.
They needn’t pull down the blind.	Им не нужно опускать штору.
Need I tell you that it leaves much to be desired?	Нужно ли мне говорить вам, что это оставляет желать лучшего?

Needn’t с перфектным инфинитивом означает, что в каком-то действии не было необходимости, а оно было совершено.

You needn’t have returned this manual to me.

Вам не было необходимости возвращать мне эту инструкцию.

Смысловой глагол to need выражает необходимость в чем-то или в ком-то, он употребляется в настоящем, прошедшем и будущем времени. В отличие от модального глагола need, после смыслового глагола to need употребляется инфинитив с частицей to, а также существительные.

You don’t need to explain it again.	Вам не нужно объяснять это заново.
Do you need any proofs?	Вам нужны доказательства?

One says to the other, “Are you worried about Mad Cow Disease?”

The other one says, “No, I needn’t worry, I’m a horse!”

Exercise 10.5.1. Give negative answers to the following questions.

Model. Must we come to the university on Saturday? – No, you needn’t. You needn’t come to the university on Saturday.

1. Must we re-equip the shop? 2. Must I motivate my proposal? 3. Must she know how to handle tools? 4. Must he try to get through a course of physics? 5. Must the writer aim at the broad reading public? 6. Must we translate our home-reading texts in writing?

Exercise 10.5.2. Paraphrase the following using the verb need.

Model. You sang the praises of him but it was unnecessary. – You needn’t have sung the praises of him.

1. The doctor made blood transfusion but it was unnecessary. 2. The theatre-goer bought opera-glasses but it was unnecessary. 3. The post-graduates learned their translations by heart but it was unnecessary. 4. I left a generous tip for the waitress but it was unnecessary. 5. She went to the hospital but it was unnecessary.

Exercise 10.5.3. Translate into English:
