8.1.3. Конструкции there is, there are

Конструкции there is, there are чрезвычайно распространены в английском языке и указывают на то, что где-то что-то находится, насчитывается или содержится.

Они ставятся в начале предложения, а слова–контейнеры, как правило, в конце. Перевод в большинстве случаев оформляется с конца.

There is (there’s) a computer in my study.	У меня дома в кабинете есть компьютер.
There are (there’re) some messages in your mail-box.	В вашем почтовом ящике несколько сообщений.

Вопросительная форма (?) образуется путем так называемой «рокировки» элементов конструкции:

Is there a computer in your study? Yes, there is. (No, there isn’t.)	В вашем кабинете есть компьютер? Да, есть. (Нет.)
Are there any mistakes in the paper? Yes, there are some. (No, there aren’t any.)	В статье есть ошибки? Да, есть. (Нет.)
What is there in the store-house?	Что имеется на складе?
How many machine-tools are there in this shop?	Сколько станков в этом цехе?
How much petrol is there in the tank?	Сколько бензина в баке?

Отрицательная форма (–) образуется, как показано на примерах:

There isn’t a blackboard in this lecture-hall. или There is no blackboard in this lecture-hall.	В аудитории нет доски.
There aren’t any electric bulbs on this shelf. или There are no electric bulbs on this shelf.	На этой полке нет электрических лампочек.

 Money spent on the brain is never spent in vain.

 There is no rule without an exception.

 There are more ways to the wood than one.

 A man is talking to God:

The man: God, how long is a million years?

God: To me, it’s about a minute.

The man: God, how much is a million dollars?

God: To me it’s a penny.

The man: God, may I have a penny?

God: Wait a minute.

Exercise 8.1.2. Make the following sentences interrogative and negative.

1. This equipment is from Poland. 2. My supervisor is an assistant professor. 3. The laboratories are in this building. 4. These post-graduates are bright and smart. 5. The dean’s office is on the first floor. 6. These machine-parts are in the store-room. 7. I’m in the lecture-room now. 8. His master’s thesis is very interesting. 9. Exercise 8.1.3. Answer the following questions.

Exercise 8.1.4. Translate this dialogue and try to learn it by heart.

– Привет! Как дела?

– Прекрасно, спасибо. Как у тебя?

– Ничего. Какие новости?

– Особо никаких.

– Отсутствие новостей – уже хорошая новость. Ты доволен своей работой?

– Боюсь, что нет. Во-первых, она далеко от дома, во-вторых, моя зарплата не очень высокая.

– Туда трудно добираться?

– Возле моего дома есть маршрутное такси, но в него нелегко сесть в часы «пик».

– Так что ты сожалеешь о своем выборе, да?

– Он интересуется восточными языками. Кроме того, его хобби – это футбол. Он – страстный болельщик. Ведь наш город знаменит своей футбольной командой. Там, конечно, слишком много иностранных игроков. Их называют легионерами (legionary). Это не радует. Хотя, возможно, я и неправ. А ты – болельщик?

– Нет. Я устал от футбола. Когда я свободен, я готов как можно больше читать. В моей домашней библиотеке много интересных книг. Моя жена права, что никогда не поздно пристраститься (become passionately fond of) к чтению. А сколько книг в твоей библиотеке?

– Я похож на своего отца, я тоже очень интересуюсь книгами. В моей комнате около 20 книжных полок, заполненных книгами. Некоторые авторы отсутствуют (to be lacking) в моей библиотеке, но ведь невозможно иметь все. Как твои родители?

– Они часто болеют, но они все еще крепкие.

– Рад это слышать. Мои старики сейчас на даче. Они страстно увлекаются работой на свежем воздухе, фруктами и овощами. Они часто отсутствуют. Я не сержусь на них. Я горжусь своими родителями. Хотя они и пенсионеры, они отнюдь (by no means) не голодают, и в их дачном домике много запасов. У них там много фруктовых соков, так что, когда испытываешь жажду, всегда есть возможность отведать что-нибудь необычное и полезное.

– Ну что ж, рад повидаться с тобой. Сейчас я опаздываю на работу. Боюсь, что водитель моей «маршрутки» спит. Где же она?

– Раз ты торопишься, значит – пока. Увидимся.

– Будь здоров. Передай от меня привет своим.

Exercise 8.1.7. Read and translate the text, try to retell it with reference to yourself.

My first name is Alexander. My last name is Lebedev. My patronymic is Leonidovich. I am 22 years old. Now I am a post-graduate of the Kharkov Polytechnic University. It is near Pushkinskaya street. Some short and very cozy streets are perpendicular to the buildings of our University. They are Gudanov street, Frunze street, Olminsky street and others. My favorite street is Olminsky street because it is very nice, shady and quiet. There are a lot of old buildings there and at the end of this street there is the Russian Consulate. It is a former mansion and a period house. It is pleasant to walk along this lane to the University. But sometimes, when you are in a hurry, you are angry at everything. It’s a pity that time is such a changeable category.

My department is called “The Technology of Fats”. There are a lot of famous specialists at our department. We are located in the study building which is opposite our highest block U1. There are 14 storeys in it. Unfortunately, now there is a serious danger of landslip for it. But I am sure that there is always a way out. Our University leaders are very wise and though they are worried now any accidents are impossible.

The scientific body of our department is famous for its innovatory developments in the field of fats. I am proud of our staff and I am certainly keen on my speciality. As to my hobbies I am fond of music and collecting autographs of prominent people. There are a lot of such autographs in my collection. The stars of this collection are our rector Tovazhnyansky, a famous pop-singer Vakarchuck, a football coach Markevich, a governor Avakov and many others.

I am not afraid of my forthcoming exams, I am ready to take them. They are rather difficult and it isn’t easy to pass them all with only excellent marks but I am an optimist. I am free from superstitions. I am like my parents who are never tired of work. Now I am busy with my English. There are a lot of new words in my vocabulary. I am fond of this language and my mother is sometimes surprised at my zeal. But she is glad of it because if a man is interested in something he is never bored. It is never late to know something new. I am always thirsty and this thirst is for knowledge. And I am always hungry here too. I am happy if you are my supporters. Am I right? Anyway I am pleased with my speciality and my University. I am not married yet but I am sure that my future wife is somewhere nearby. My father is a former military man. He is a retired colonel. Now he is a pensioner. My mother is a former accountant. Now she is a housewife and she is crazy about home preserving.
