4.2. Употребление числительных

Кроме собственно количества предметов или вещества, с помощью числительных называются:

• хронологические даты:

• годы обозначаются количественными числительными. При этом, если год не содержит тысяч, например, 325 год, то он читается как обычное число: three hundred and twenty five. При этом слово year (год) после числа не употребляется, иногда употребляется перед ним: in the year three hundred and twenty five. Если число года состоит из четырех цифр, то, как правило, такая дата читается как два числа: 1673 – sixteen seventy three; 1958 – nineteen fifty eight. Существуют особенности в чтении дат, содержащих нули: 1900 – nineteen hundred; 1907 – nineteen [ou] seven; 2000 – two thousand; 2007 – two thousand seven. Существуют специальные сокращения для обозначения дат до рождества Христова и нашей эры: BC и AD соответственно. Поэтому, например, год рождения Архимеда будет записан как 287 BC, а будет читаться two hundred and eighty seven BC (before Christ): Archimedes was born in 287 BC.

• даты месяца обычно обозначаются порядковыми числительными и читаются следующим образом: 12th January, 1984 (January 12, 1984) – the twelfth of January nineteen eighty-four;

• номера телефонов. При этом каждая цифра номера называется отдельно, например: 765-39-40 – seven six five three nine four zero.

• проценты: 24% – twenty-four per cent; 0.2% – zero point two per cent (point two per cent).

• номера комнат, глав книг, номеров страниц, автобусов и т.п. В отличие от русского языка, где в этом случае используются порядковые числительные, в английском используют количественные числительные, стоящие после соответствующего существительного. Существительное в этом случае употребляется без артикля:

  The dean’s office is situated on the second floor in room sixty nine.	Деканат расположен на третьем этаже в комнате 69.

• денежные суммы: $15 – fifteen dollars; 10c – ten cents; £100 – a hundred pounds; 1250€ – one thousand two hundred and fifty euros.

Exercise 4.1. Read the sentences paying attention to the numerals.

1. Students spend on average ₤30 a week on alcohol, three times as much as they do on books and course materials. It is their second biggest expense after rent. 2. 61% of French women are the ideal weight for their height, but only 14% are happy with their bodies. 3. The average male life expectancy in Glasgow is 53.9 years, compared with 67.49 in Iraq and 70.5 in Gaza. 12. Big Ben (the bell) weighs 13.5 tons and can be heard more than ten miles away.
