8.12. Настоящее завершенно-длительное время (The PresentPerfectContinuousTense)

8.12.1. Способ образования

Эта временная форма образуется с помощью вспомогательного глагола to be в форме Present Perfect плюс смысловой глагол в форме Participle I.

В разговорном английском языке используются сокращенные формы: I’ve, You’ve, he’s, she’s, we’ve, they’ve.

8.12.2. Область применения

Present Perfect Continuous употребляется, когда речь идет о действии, которое началось в прошлом, длилось какое-то время (предлоги for, since) и все еще продолжается или непосредственно закончилось, перед настоящим моментом:

We’ve been staying here for a week.	Мы живем здесь вот уже неделю.
I have been thinking about it for a long time.	Я думаю об этом в течение длительного времени.
You’ve been making excuses for him all your life.	Ты всю свою жизнь извиняешься перед ним.
Your shoes are wet. – I’ve been walking in the rain.	У тебя мокрые туфли. – Я гулял под дождем.

В предложениях со сказуемым в Present Perfect Continuous обычно указывается отрезок времени, в течение которого продолжается (или продолжалось) действие. Обстоятельства времени чаще всего вводятся предлогами for – в течение и since – c, c тех пор как и отвечают на вопрос How long? – Сколько времени, как долго?

They’ve been arranging the new exhibits since early this morning.	Они с самого утра расставляют новые экспонаты.
He took over as Director General ten years ago, and has been running the firm successfully since then.	Он стал генеральным директором десять лет тому назад и с тех пор успешно руководит фирмой.

Present Perfect Continuous может употребляться с наречиями lately и recently, которые переводятся на русский язык “в последнее время”.

They’ve been doing a lot to improve the quality recently.	В последнее время они многое делают, чтобы улучшить качество.
We’ve been trying to increase our international contacts lately (recently).	В последнее время мы стараемся расширить наши международные связи.

Помимо перечисленных обстоятельств времени с Present Perfect Continuous могут употребляться любые обстоятельственные слова, обозначающие отрезок времени, продолжающийся до момента речи:

It’s been raining all day (long).	Весь день идет дождь.
He’s been trying to keep fix all his life.	Он всю жизнь старается держаться в форме.

Глаголы, которые не могут обозначать процесса (статичные глаголы: be, see, hear, feel, want, notice, understand, like, believe, contain, agree и т.д.), не употребляются в любых формах Continuous в том числе и в группе времен Perfect Continuous. В соответствующих случаях такие глаголы употребляются в форме Present Perfect.

I haven’t seen you for ages!	Тысячу лет тебя не видел!
We have been here for already 3 hours.	Мы здесь уже 3 часа.

Exercise 8.12.1. Make the sentences negative and interrogative.

1. She has been reporting for two hours now. 2. They have been trying to solve this problem for many years. 3. This college has been carrying out teaching by tutorial system since 1997. 4. He has been preparing the report for two weeks. 5. French engineers have been developing a new ceramic engine for a few years. 6. They have been decorating their flat for already a month. 7. He has been teaching students since 1992.

Exercise 8.12.2. Translate the following sentences.

1. Civilization has been changing the global climate and water balance since the beginning of its industrial phase of development. 2. Now researchers have been looking for the most suitable chemical compounds to be used as data storage. 3. Lately optical fibres have been replacing conventional telephone wires and cables in telecommunication. 4. One of the problems scientists have been working at for the last decade is to transmit energy to space stations by using lasers. 5. Recently physicists of this country have been working at a very interesting problem – combining laser and thermonuclear reaction – to produce a practically limitless source of energy. 6. Since the beginning of the 20^th century electricity has been successfully developing throughout the industrial world. 7. For the last three years engineers of this firm have been experimenting with a state-of-the-art “night vision system” for drivers. 8. Digital systems of information transmission have been taking the place of analog(ue) systems in the last 25 years. 9. Since 1995 physicists have been conducting experiments with laser beams by using large laser installations. 10. For some years specialists in many countries have been working at new economical and less noisy aircrafts than jets. 11. Since morning I have been collecting all the information I can find on the Internet about this subject. 12. This department has been designing a radar to be mounted on lorries and cars for already 2 years. 13. Mankind has been doubling the consumption of electricity every ten years. 14. They have been carrying out experimental work to solve the problem of environment protection since early fifties. 15. For a few years these engineers have been working at the problem of developing electric power station with the use of a thermal-chemical cycle.

Exercise 8.12.3. Use Present Perfect Continuous or Present Perfect in the following sentences.

1. I (to be) busy since we last met. 2. I’m very fond of Alice but I (not to see) much of her lately. 3. Why are you so tired? I (to walk) around all day. I (to have) a few drinks and nothing to eat. 4. I (to cook, to clean) and (to dig) for three days and I’m exhausted. 5. – I don’t think your mother expects you to become an electrician. What she (to say) to you ? – Nothing. 6. Imagine how much they (to learn) since they entered the university. 7. The other chap is a man who threw up his job ten years ago and he (not to work) since. 8. Do you know of any good books coming out soon? I (not to read) anything amusing for ages. 9. He (to make) nothing but trouble for years. 10. He just (to come). He (to be away) for such a long time. He (to take part) in the expedition since last year.

Exercise 8.12.4. Ask questions to the following sentences beginning them with “How long” or “Since when (what time)”.

1. Since eighties scientists have been developing various kinds of composite ceramics. 2. This is an excellent computer which has been giving me many years of service. 3. For a few hours this device has been processing the information. 4. Since yesterday they have been testing the engine. 5. We have been trying to organize the club for three months now. 6. Their firm has been producing several types of minicomputers for a few years now.

Exercise 8.12.5. Translate the following into English concentrating on the use of Present Perfect Continuous.

1. Этот завод выпускает роторные турбины вот уже четверть века. 2. В течение какого времени ученые этого научно-исследовательского института выращивают монокристаллы? 3. Преподаватели этой кафедры уже давно используют методы дистанционного обучения. 4. Инженеры находятся в лаборатории уже 3 часа, но они все еще не достигли необходимого эффекта. 5. С какого времени рабочие охлаждают этот агрегат? 6. Этот прибор не функционирует уже в течение недели. 7. С 2002 года ликеро-водочный завод нашего города выпускает несколько новых марок (makes, brands) красного шампанского. 8. Новые хозяева приватизировали этот металлургический завод. Он был государственным предприятием на протяжении 50 лет.
