8.10. Прошедшее завершенное время (The Past Perfect Tense)

8.10.1. Способ образования

Утвердительная форма Past Perfect образуется с помощью вспомогательного глагола had и смыслового глагола в форме причастия прошедшего времени (Past Participle): He had come back by 9 p.m.

В вопросительной форме вспомогательный глагол had ставится перед подлежащим: – Had he come back by 9 p.m.? – Yes, he had. / No, he had not (hadn’t).

В отрицательной форме после вспомогательного глагола употребляется отрицательная частица not: He hadn’t come back by 9 p.m.

8.10.2. Область применения

Past Perfect употребляется для выражения действия, которое совершилось, завершилось к какому-то моменту в прошлом или до какого-то другого действия в прошлом (явление, известное под названием «предпрошедшее время»).

Before the Labour Party won the elections its numbers had done a lot of useful work in the districts.	Перед тем, как Лейбористская партия одержала победу на выборах, члены этой партии провели полезную работу в округах.
When the forest-ranger had found the poachers, he called the guards.	Когда лесничий обнаружил браконьеров, он вызвал охрану.

В этом и подобных случаях в придаточном предложении возможен допуск на употребление Past Simple, если говорящий не противопоставляет оба действия.

He said that his wife had agreed to a divorce without hesitation.	Он сказал, что его жена согласилась на развод, не колеблясь.
She was happy. She had just won in the lottery.	Она была счастлива. Она только что выиграла в лотерею.
The archer hadn’t achieved his best form by the beginning of the Olympic Games.	Лучник не набрал свою лучшую форму к началу Олимпиады.
The famous scientist had issued his memoirs before the crisis in the publishing trade.	Знаменитый ученый издал свои мемуары до наступления кризиса в издательском деле.
The astronaut had been in the orbit for three days before the flight-control centre decided to change the trajectory of the space shuttle.	Космонавт находился на орбите в течение трех дней, прежде чем центр управления полетами решил изменить траекторию космического “челнока”.

Exercise 8.10.1. Make the following sentences interrogative and negative.

1. The analysts had written the international survey before the confrontation between two bordering states triggered off a new conflict. 2. Social science teachers had set up a united committee by the beginning of the conference. 3. This odious figure had carried out a number of provocations before the ordinary members of our association got his measure. 4. The opposition press had slandered all the election contestants by the first day of the vote. 5. When he arrived at the assembly-hall the discussion had proved to be an empty rhetoric. 6. The famous development engineer reported that his device had won the first prize at the industrial exhibition in Portugal. 7. This enterprise had produced the record number of convector radiators by the end of the year.

Exercise 8.10.2. Change from direct into indirect speech.

Model: The chief designer said, “I decided to insert amendments in the text of the specifications.” – The chief designer said that he had decided to insert amendments in the text of the specifications.

1. The associate professor said, “I acquainted myself with the resolution”. 2. The fresher said, “I was deeply impressed by our alma mater”. 3. The theatre-goer said, “I have seen this play three times”. 4. The solicitor said, “I didn’t believe in my client’s testimonies”. 5. Our dean said, “This instructor hasn’t defended his doctor’s dissertation yet.” 6. The chief engineer remarked, “The production output from the unit of working area has increased”. 7. The policeman said, “You have violated traffic regulations”. 8. The general said, “I have appointed a new orderly”. 9. The draughtsman said, “I have run out of drawing paper”. 10. The hall-porter said, “You didn’t hand in the keys last night”. 11. The opposition leaders declared, “We did our best to make the government resign”.

Exercise 8.10.3. Open the brackets using the verbs in Present Perfect, Past Simple, Past Continuous or Past Perfect.
