§ 10.
There are a few other modal verbs and set phrases which are the Subjunctive Mood or the Conditional Mood only by origin. Now they have ceased to expressed unreality. They are the set phrases had better, would rather/sooner (there is no difference between would rather and would sooner, but would rather is more often heard), should/would like.
§ 11.
Had better
Had better. This is a fixed phrase, meaning it is advisable, followed by the bare infinitive. Had here is an unreal past; the had never changes, even though the phrases refer to present or future action:
I’d better ring him at once. ( This would be a good thing to do.)
You had better not miss the last bus. ( It would be unwise to miss it.)
