The “Age of Enlightenment” is only one of several names given to the 18th century by historians. The name emphasized the importance of reason and learning to many people who lived at that time. The 18th-century years are also known as the “Ancient Regime” (the old regime), a name that describes the rigidity and traditionalism characteristic of 18th-century politics. The “Ancient Regime” bore within it the seeds of its own destruction.
The “Age of Reason” is still another name for this period in history, so named for the cult of intellectuals who were devoted to dispassionate logic as a means for problem solving. The gods of this cult were Newton and Locke and, for many scholars, reason became religion.
