Exercise 1: Translate the extracts below into English. Pay special attention to rendering the underlined stretches.
Если бы путешествие во времени (time travel) было возможным, я бы хотел бы вернуться в средние века. Хотя Средневековье было мрачным временем и условия жизни были тяжелыми, потребность человека к самовыражению нашла выражение в занятиях искусством и ремеслом, в особенностях замковой архитектуры, ювелирного дела, строительных технологий, каллиграфии, живописи. Римская Католическая Церковь стала наиболее мощной объединяющей силой. Большинство людей к тому времени обратились в христианство. Некоторые искали защиты и спасения за уединенными стенами монастырей и давали клятву целомудрия, бедности и смирения. Несмотря на грубость средневековой жизни, в монастырях сохранялись и даже процветали грамотность и наука. Не хотелось бы мне оказаться на месте крепостного: на нижней ступени социальной и политической лестницы. Девизом жизни (The motto for life) знати были слова: "Сила всегда права". Было бы интересно увидеть, как рыцари участвовали в крестовых походах и вели разрушительные войны за веру в Святой Земле. Но и в Европе феодалы похищали людей и требовали выкуп. Земное существование людей эпохи Средневековья было полно риска.
В средние века люди не придавали значения реальности. Они считали тело темницей души. В отличие от древних римлян, которые придавали особое значение внешней стороне, христианство обратило свой взор к внутренней стороне, к человеческой душе. Все эти идеи, бесспорно, находили свое отражение в средневековом искусстве, особенно в архитектуре. Основные архитектурные стили в средние века - это романский и готический стили. Церкви в романском стиле выглядели как укрепленные замки. В отличие от романской церкви с ее солидными, мужественными, просто украшенными формами, готический стиль сложен, женственен, богато украшен, аскетичен. Вестминстерское Аббатство в Лондоне является одним из самых знаменитых готических соборов в мире. Неф собора направлен на восток. Особую силу общей структуре придают массивные опоры. На западном конце нефа расположено великолепное окно-розетка. Боковые нефы часовни имеют своды в форме вееров. Потолок же имеет необычную круговую систему сводов. В целом этот шедевр готического искусства, построенный в форме креста, с его стремлением ввысь, бесконечной сложностью частей, окнами из витражного стекла, символизирует человеческое стремление к вечному изяществу и спасению.
Exercise 2: Read through the text “The Middle Ages” and the pieces of description in Ex. 2 of Step 3. Single out and put down the initial forms of vocabulary units which are useful to describe buildings, sculptures and pictures.
Exercise 3: Use the vocabulary units in short descriptive paragraphs of your own. You may use the leads below, or choose any subject of your own. Don't overcomplicate your sentences!
