World of work. Do we live to work or work to live

What’s a typical working day?

  1. In Italy it’s not unusual for people to start at 7.30 a.m. Lunch is taken seriously and shops and business begin to close for lunch from 1 p.m. If they can, people will go home or to restaurants, many to take a three course lunch before returning to work at 4 p.m. the day is over by 6 p.m. and work is definitely left in the office.

  2. In Denmark starting time is 8-9 a.m. and people take an hour’s lunch between 11.30 a.m. Most companies have cafeterias to ensure staff have a healthy meal. People generally work an eight-hour day, finishing their work between 4 and 5 p.m., but those in managerial positions may stay later. Some people take work home with them.

  3. In the USA people are at work by 8-9 a.m. lunch is often fast and you can have food delivered to eat at your desk. People finish their work at any time from 5.30 to 10 p.m. They tend not to take work home.

  4. A working day in France may start at 9.30 a.m., then comes lunch at around 1 p.m. There is no eating at desks here. People have a proper sit-down meal, sometimes with wine, lasting up to an hour and a half. Business lunches are common, and can stretch to two hours. Finishing time is 6-7 p.m. is the norm, and most people don’t take work home – they value their family time.

  5. Most people in Japan start at 8.30 a.m. lunch is at their company restaurant. It is a fast-service, set-menu place. Women are allowed to take longer than men! Some people work until 11 p.m., but 5-7 p.m. is the norm. they don’t take work home.

Shops

Shops are open Monday to Friday from 9 am until a) (5.30) pm. and on Saturday from 9 am until 4 or b) (5)pm. Many places have late night shopping on Thursday or Friday evenings.

Banks and Post Offices

Banks are open Monday to Friday from c) (9) am. until 5 pm and sometimes later on Tuesday or Friday. Post offices are open Monday to Friday from 8.30 am until d) (5) pm, and often on Saturday from 8.30 am until noon.

Chemists

Chemists are open Monday to Friday from 8 until e) (5.30)pm. Some chemists stay open to cover evenings, nights and weekends.

Restaurants

Restaurants are generally open for lunch from f) (11) am until 3 pm and for dinner from g) (5.30) until 10 pm. The Dutch are not late dinners, but there are some restaurants which stay open late in the big cities.
