Take one of these quizzes and write a one-page reflection on your results referring to at least THREE concepts in the chapter (10 points).

Quiz 2: Deception Acceptance

People vary widely in the degree to which they think deception is an acceptable and appropriate form of verbal communication. To test your deception acceptance, check each statement that you agree with. Then total your checks and compare it to the scoring key.

Scoring: 0–3: Low deception acceptance. You believe that deception is unacceptable no matter the circumstance, and you likely react extremely negatively when you find out people have lied to you.

4–6: Moderate deception acceptance. You believe that deception is acceptable under certain circumstances, and you probably are more accepting when others lie to you.

7–10: High deception acceptance. You believe that deception is an acceptable form of behavior, and you likely use it regularly to deal with difficult communication and relationship situations.

Chapter 7. Communicating Nonverbally Theory

I. Principles of Nonverbal Communication

A. Nonverbal communication is the intentional or unintentional transmission of meaning through an individual’s nonspoken physical and behavioral cues.

B. Nonverbal communication uses multiple channels, such as auditory, visual or tactile.

C. Nonverbal communication is more ambiguous: we can interpret it in many ways;

DISCUSSION STARTER 1: When you receive mixed messages from someone, which do you put more faith in, the verbal or the nonverbal communication? Why? Is it ethical to deliberately send mixed messages to someone during an interpersonal encounter?

DISCUSSION STARTER 2: Do the women you know read others’ nonverbal communication more accurately than men? Do they smile more? Hold their gaze longer? Are men more territorial than women in their use of space?
