Assessing Your Emotional Intelligence

Consider your emotional experience and communication over the next two weeks. Then look at the statements listed under each of the four emotional intelligence dimensions, placing a check mark next to each statement that describes your abilities. Follow the Scoring directions below to interpret your score.

Perceiving emotions

Accurately perceiving and interpreting emotional messages as they are communicated by others’ facial expressions, vocal tones, and gestures; accurately perceiving your own emotions based on your physiological and mental experiences.

Scoring: Count the number of check marks you made in each dimension. Scores of 0–2 for a particular dimension represent an area of emotional intelligence that needs strengthening; scores of 3–4 represent an area of strength.

Place a check mark next to the statements with which you agree. Count up all your check marks, and then use the Scoring key below to interpret your score.

Scoring: A score of 0–2 means low hostility. If you’ve scored in this range, you likely experience anger on an occasional basis, triggered in the normal way by events that you perceive negatively. A score of 3–4 means moderate hostility. If you fall into this range, anger may be an issue of concern in your interpersonal relationships.

A score of 5–7 means high hostility. You likely experience anger frequently, and your interpersonal relationships are probably strongly and detrimentally affected by your anger.
