General information about Ukraine

Ukraine is situated in the south-east of Europe. The territory of Ukraine extends 900 km from the north to the south and 1.300 km from the east to the west.

The total area of Ukraine is 603.700 sq. km. The geographical position of Ukraine is very favourable for the development of its relations with countries of Europe, as well as with the countries throughout the world.

In the west Ukraine borders on Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. It also borders on Russia, Byelorussia and Moldova. It is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov and has very important ports. In the north of Ukraine there are forests, in the west—the Carpathian mountains, in the eastern and central Ukraine -black-soil steppeland.

The Ukrainian Carpathians and the Crimean Mountains are the most famous Ukrainian mountains. The main territory of Ukraine is flat. The major rivers are the Dnieper River, the Dnister, the Bug, the Donets and others.

The population of Ukraine is over 46 million people. The representatives of many nationalities live there.

The independence of Ukraine was proclaimed on the 24-th of August, 1991. Now it is a sovereign state. Ukraine is a member of the United Nation Organization and takes part in the work of many international organizations.

The Ukrainian political system has a popularly elected President, a 450-person single-chamber national Parliament- the Verkhovna Rada. The yellow-and-blue flag is hoisted over it.

The national flag of Ukraine was accepted by Supreme Ukrainian Council in Lviv in l848.

Following the declaration of independence, the blue-and-yellow flag was adopted as the national flag of Ukraine by an act of Parliament on the 28-th of January 1992.

Ukraine is a well developed industrial and agricultural country. The Ukraine's main minerals are iron, manganese, lead and zink, titanium ores and coal. It is rich in mineral resources. The country has a big metallurgical, machine-building, fuel and power base; it is the producer of chemical and agricultural raw materials. There is a series of electric power stations on the Dnieper River. Ukraine is a producer of sugar and sunflower seeds, potatoes and other vegetables. Scientists of Ukraine enriched the science with important discoveries and inventions.

The Academy of Science of Ukraine includes many outstanding scientists and research workers famous for their important research work.

Ukraine has a very rich and varied culture and history.

There are a lot of higher educational establishments in Ukraine, a lot of professional theatres and Phylarmonic Societies, public libraries and state museums.

1.1. Для того, щоб навчитися утворювати заперечну форму пасивних речень, вивчіть інструкцію 1 та виконайте вправу 1 (с. 79). Література: [2].

2.1.Користуючись складеним вдома планом тексту і виписаними ключовими словами, передайте коротко сутність тексту.
