Dr. Laura Oleaga, MD, PhD, received her medical degree from the School of
Medicine of the Autonomous University of Madrid. She completed her training in
radiology at the Hospital Donostia in San Sebastian. She trained as a Research
Fellow in Magnetic Resonance Imaging at the University of Pennsylvania in the
Department of Radiology. She served as a staff member specialist in Magnetic
Resonance Imaging in the Hospital of Basurto (Bilbao). She earned a PhD degree in
medicine from the University of the Basque Country (Spain) in 1998. Dr Laura
Oleaga was appointed Chair of the Radiology Department of the Hospital Clínic in
Barcelona in 2009. Since 2008, she has also worked as Neuroradiologist at the
Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and has served as Professor of Radiology at the
University of Barcelona. In 2022, she stepped down as the Chair of the Hospital
Clinic. She now continues working as a clinical neuroradiologist, while also serving
as the Director of the Core Lab at the Monclinic Foundation.
Prof. Laura Oleaga is an active member of many scientic societies and organizations. She served as the vice president of the Spanish Radiological Society
(SERAM) from 2002 to 2006, and as the Chair of the Scientic Committee of
SERAM from 2006 to 2008. She was appointed as the Chair of the Education
Committee of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) from 2015 to 2018. She
has served as the Scientic Director of the European Diploma in Radiology from
2018 to the present.
She has been actively involved in educational activities in neuroradiology and
head and neck imaging, with a primary focus on brain and head, and neck tumors.
Her work has been dedicated to advancing education in radiology.
She has authored and co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed scientic papers
and 10 book chapters.

Dr. Núria Bargalló, MD, PhD, is the current President of the SENR and Head of
Neuroradiology Section at the Hospital Clinic, in Barcelona. She is also an Assistant
Professor of Radiology at the University of Barcelona, and the Strategic Director of
the Magnetic Resonance Image Core Facility at the IDIBAPS, Barcelona, Spain.
Previously she has served as the Chair of the Subspecialities and Allied Science
Committee and the Chair of the Quality, Safety and Standard of the European
Society of Radiology. She has led a European working group on functional MR in
epilepsy within the European Society of Neuroradiology, and she was a member of
the diagnostic committee of this society from 2014 to 2020.
Dr. Bargalló received her medical degree from the School of Medicine of the
Autonomous University of Barcelona. She completed her training in radiology at
the Hospital Clínic in the same city. She earned a PhD degree in Medicine and
Surgery from the University of Barcelona (Spain) in 2004. She has done several
training stays in different hospitals in the United States and the United Kingdom to
learn new imaging techniques in neuroradiology.
She has focused on the study of advanced imaging of degenerative diseases,
psychiatric diseases and epilepsy. She has co-authored 11 chapters in books, and
edited two textbooks in radiology. She has published 362 articles as an author/coauthor in international peer-reviewed journals, with a H-index of 59. She has
obtained 39 research project competitive grants (national and international), and
ve research grants as principal investigation. She has supervised ve PhD thesis.

Dr María Rosario Barrena Caballo is one of Spain’s pioneering women in interventional neuroradiology.
She took her rst steps in diagnostic neuroradiology in 1989, at the Miguel
Servet Hospital in Zaragoza, when she was in her fourth year of radiology residency. Subsequently, the hospital hired her to work in the Neuroradiology Section,
combining diagnostic and interventional vascular care for the rst 5years.
In those years there were few women who were committed to interventional
radiology; Dr. de Miguel, Dr. Frutos and Dr. Sola, who also share a good friendship
with each other, cooperated in this eld.
Dr Barrena has spent periods of training in France, with Dr Casasco at Lariboisière
Hospital and La Pitié Salpêtrière Hospital, and instructive stays in Essen (Dr
Chapot), Limoges (Dr Mounayer), Geneva (Dr Mendes), Stuttgart (Dr Henkes),
Bern (Dr Gralla) and Stockholm (Dr Andersson). In this way, she has been able to
learn different approaches of understanding vascular pathologies and their therapeutic approaches.
During her professional life, she has written and collaborated in 59 national and
international publications and 150 oral communications. She has served as a member of the board of the SENR and also the GENI (Spanish group of Interventional
Neuroradiology), and is currently a member of the Societies of Diagnostic and
Interventional Neuroradiology (SENR, ESNR, GENI, ESMINT, SILAN). She is a
member of the stroke and carotid pathology and complex cerebral vascular pathology committees, and has participated in the development of protocols for SAH,
treatment of carotid stenosing pathology, and the hospital stroke code of Aragon
(Spain).
After reading her PhD thesis “Radiological evolutionary study of patients with
cerebral aneurysms in the reference area of the Miguel Servet Hospital in Zaragoza,
treated by endovascular therapy”, Dr. Barrena has joined the Department of
Radiology at the University of Zaragoza as an Associate Professor.

Women inNeuroradiology: Sweden

Introduction
The history of women in neuroradiology in Sweden is marked by the contributions
of several female neuroradiologists, who dedicated their careers to advancing the
eld of neuroradiology in Sweden. Their participation inlocal radiological departments, in radiological societies, and their scientic and technical contributions have
brought Swedish neuroradiology forward. This chapter presents some of the most
inuential Swedish female neuroradiologists and their contribution to Swedish neuroradiology. Neuroradiology has been a subspecialty in Sweden for many years.
Female neuroradiologists have constantly increased over the past years. Latest statistics from 2021 show that Sweden had 150 certied neuroradiologists of whom 58
were women. Several female neuroradiologists have or currently hold positions as
professors and academic leaders at their institutes/universities. Both Raili Raininko
and Elna-Marie Larsson were pioneers in MR research already in the early era of
the rst MR scanners. They as well as Pia Sundgren, Isabella Björkman-Burtscher,
Maria Wiberg, Ida Blystad, and Anna Falk Delgado have focused on imaging techniques, advanced MR applications in brain imaging research and implementation in
clinical practice. Female neuroradiologists have been incremental for the development of interventional neuroradiology in Sweden. Presently, Birgitta Ramgren and
Åsa Kuntze Söderqvist are well-known national and international interventional
neuroradiologists.
Raili Raininko, MD, PhD, received her MD degree (1970) and PhD degree in
Medical Sciences (1978) from the University of Turku, Finland. She received specialist degrees in radiology (1975) and in neuroradiology (1980) in Finland. After
working at the University hospitals of Turku and Helsinki in Finland, she worked at
the University of Michigan in 1992–1993. In 1994, she moved to Sweden as a professor of Neuroradiology at Uppsala University. After the ofcial retirement 2012,
she continued her scientic work. She has published about 170 original articles in
peer-reviewed scientic journals and 43 review articles and book chapters. She has
been a supervisor for 11 PhD students. She started working with MR imaging as
early as 1984. Diagnostic utility of new methods and description of the normal
structures in the brain and spine in different age groups with different techniques
have been main areas in her research. Rare hereditary neurological diseases in children and adults have been a special object of her interest. She developed the educa-

tion of medical students by integrating neuroradiology in teaching of anatomy. She
has organized radiological and neuroradiological courses at different levels, nationally and internationally. She has been chief of the neuroradiological unit at the
Meilahti Hospital, Helsinki University Hospital, Finland, and at the Uppsala
University Hospital, Sweden.

Elna-Marie Larsson, MD, PhD, received her medical degree from Lund
University (1977), Sweden, and her doctoral degree (PhD) in diagnostic radiology
from the same university (1989). This was followed by a post-doc for one year at the
University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, Texas, USA. During
2006–2009, she had a position as professor of radiology at Aarhus University,
Denmark. In 2009, she moved back to Sweden and became appointed as professor
of neuroradiology at Uppsala University and from 2010, also visiting professor of
neuroradiology at Linkoping University, both until retirement in 2018. She has published more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed scientic journals and 30 descriptive
articles and textbook chapters. She has been the main supervisor of 14 PhD and
co-supervisor for 14 PhD students. Her research has been focused on advanced
cerebral MR imaging of the brain with applications in dementia, brain tumors, and
normal pressure hydrocephalus. Her clinical activity has included CT and MRI of
the brain, spine, and head&neck. She has been the director of neuroradiology and of
MRI at the department of radiology, Lund University Hospital and at the department
of radiology, Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden. She has vast experience in
teaching (national and international) with emphasis on MRI and neuroradiology and
has organized several MRI and neuroradiology courses, including European Society
of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology (ESMRMB) courses. She has
been president of ESMRMB, the Swedish Society of Neuroradiology (SFNR), the
Nordic Society of Neuroradiology (NSNR), and the Danish Society for Medical
Magnetic Resonance (DSMMR).

Maria Kristoffersen Wiberg MD, PhD, received her medical degree at the medical school in Umeå 1981, received her specialization in radiology 1992, in neuroradiology 2005, and her doctoral degree (PhD) in diagnostic radiology 2002. She has
been a senior lecturer since 1998 at Karolinska University Hospital (KS) Huddinge.
She was the head of the MRI-unit at the Department of Radiology at KS Huddinge
(1998–2010) and Head of Department of Radiology at KS Huddinge (2011–2016).
She became professor in Radiology at Linköping University 2017 and is present
professor emeritus at Linköping University since 2022. Her contribution to the eld
of radiology and neuroradiology is broad but with a focus on MR methods both in
neuroradiology and musculoskeletal radiology. She set up the rst MR unit in
Sundsvall 1992, implemented the method in clinical routine, and implemented
breast MR in clinical routine in 2002. She moved to KS in 1994, responsible for the
installation and clinical start-up of the new MR-equipment at KS and was involved
in the planning and installation of the new building for the radiological department
and operation theaters at KS Huddinge (2010–2020). Her research focus has been
in the diagnosis of neuroinammation and neurodegeneration in cooperation with
clinical specialists with, for example, the start of a longitudinal still ongoing standardized collection of MRI in multiple sclerosis and imaging for volumetric assessments in dementia with established standardized evaluations. She participated in the
start of the Swedish MS-registry. Since 1994, she has participated in teaching in
areas such as MRI in general, as a method, and specically in diagnosis of neuroinammation and neurodegeneration. She has supervised several master students and
four PhD students as mains supervisor and ve as co-supervisor.

Pia C. Maly Sundgren MD, PhD, received her medical degree from Lund
University (LU), Sweden (1986), and her doctoral degree (PhD) in diagnostic radiology (1991), followed by specialization in radiology (1993) and subspecialization
in neuroradiology (1997), and associate professor (1995) at the same institution.
After working as a neuroradiologist with special focus on adult and pediatric neuroradiology, she went to the Department of Radiology at the University of Michigan,
USA, 2001, where she became a full professor in 2006. In 2009, she returned to
Sweden as appointed Professor of Diagnostic Radiology at LU and, as of 2016, also
Co-Director for Lund University BioImaging Centre. She has published over 210
papers and reviews in peer reviewed scientic journals, and 22 textbook chapters.
Her supervision covers ongoing and concluded PhD projects as main supervisor for
eight PhD students and as co-supervisor for three PhD students, 14 master students,
and over 20 undergraduate and graduate students in research. Her main area of
research is advanced MR imaging of the brain with applications in brain tumors and
autoimmune diseases in which she collaborates nationally and internationally. She
has been the president of the International Society of Magnetic resonance imaging
in Medicine (ISMRM), president of European Society of Neuroradiology (ESNR),
and is presently General Secretary of the World Federation of Neuroradiology
Societies (WFNRS) and Deputy Chair of the European Board of Neuroradiology.
She is a well-recognized faculty at congresses and courses with over 400 internationally invited lectures and workshops. Prof. Sundgren has been awarded, among
others, the MICHR Michigan Clinical and Translational Research Distinguished
Mentor Award, the Minerva Leadership Award from the Medical Faculty of Lund
University, and the Nelson Mandela Gold medal for unique contribution to the
South African Radiology, South Africa. She is a Senior ISMRM Fellow.
