Yongmei Li, MD
Yongmei Li, MD, is a female professor at Chongqing Medical University and serves as the deputy director of the Radiology Department in the university’s First Afliated Hospital in China. She is a member of the Neurology Group of the Chinese Society of Radiology, the Radiology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and vice chairman of the Radiology Branch of the Chongqing Medical Association. She earned her doctoral degree from Chongqing Medical University in 2008. In 2010, she was a visiting fellow in the Neuroradiology Department at NewYork University Medical College for 6 months. Dr Li has specialized in neuroradiology for approxi­mately 20 years, focusing on demyelinating and cerebral small vessel diseases of the central nervous system. She has published numerous articles in reputable jour­nals, including European Radiology, J Magnetic Imaging, J Neuroradiology, J Neurol, Neuroradiology, Academic Radiology, Cerebral Cortex, and Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders. Additionally, she has served as a peer reviewer for several journals such as Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders, Academic Radiology, Insights into Imaging, and the Chinese Journal of Radiology. She is also the communicating editor for the Chinese Journal of Radiology, a leading journal in the eld. As a member of expert consensus working groups, including the Diagnostic Criteria for Multiple Sclerosis Imaging and Standardized Application of Multiple Sclerosis MRI, she has contributed to the development of multiple sclerosis guide­lines. She has co-authored several books, including Brain Imaging Diagnosis (Third edition), Imaging of Central Nervous System Demyelinating Diseases, and Imaging of Central Nervous System Infections and Neuroimmunology, published by People’s Health Publishing House. As a mentor for master’s and doctoral candidates, she has trained numerous successful radiologists. She has been awarded Academic Leader and Chongqing innovative talents leader.
Yunjing Xue MD.
Yunjing Xue MD is a Chinese neuroradiologist, a Professor and Doctoral supervisor at the Fujian Medical University. She currently serves as the chairperson of the department of radiology at Fujian Medical University Union Hospital, imaging

technology of Fujian Medical University and the Fujian Society of Radiology in China. She graduated with a degree in medicine from Fujian Medical University in
1995. She did her residency in radiology at the Fujian Medical University Union Hospital. She received her doctorate from the Capital Medical University of Beijing in 2007. She spent 1 year at the University of Washington Medical Center—in the vascular radiology laboratory as a visiting fellow from 2010 to 2011. That was a great experience for her, becoming part of the cardiovascular radiology and neuro­radiology staff from then on. With a career from 2007 to the present, she brings extensive experience and expertise to her role. Her work focuses on medical radiol­ogy, particularly in cardiovascular radiology and neuroradiology. The paper “Preliminary Study on Computational Fluid Dynamics of Carotid Bifurcation Hemodynamic State” was honored as the fth Outstanding Academic Paper by the Journal of China Association for Science and Technology. Her project “The Establishment and Promotion of MRI Precision Diagnosis System for Major Brain Diseases” won the second prize of the Fujian Medical Science and Technology Award. This system serves the clinical practice of a variety of high-incidence and high-risk of major brain diseases such as stroke, brain tumors, and neurodegenera­tive disorder, which has signicantly improved the cure rate and reduced the mortal­ity and disability rate.
Yan Zhou MD.
Yan Zhou MD is a Chinese neuroradiologist. Yan Zhou received her MD from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China, in 2007. She is the director of the Department of Radiology at Renji Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Her research interests lie in Neuroimaging. She was a visiting scholar at the University Hospital of KU Leuven in Belgium and the University of Washington in the US in 2005 and 2011, respectively. Since 2021, she has been the administrative director of the Department of Radiology at Renji Hospital. She is also a professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. She serves as a member of the Neuroimaging Group of the Chinese Society of Radiology and the Neuroimaging Group of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, among other roles. She and her research group have published 70 papers focusing on functional imaging of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular dis­eases. Her work has received coverage from mainstream media outlets domestically and internationally, including CNN, China Daily, and People’s Daily Online.
Zhiyun Yang
Zhiyun Yang, graduated from Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences and got her bachelor degree in 1988, after which, she specialized in the diagnostic imaging of head and neck, ophthalmic and otorhinolaryngologic and neurological diseases with celebrated Professors Chen Junlu and Professor Meng Quanfei and was granted the master degree and doctoral degree, respectively.
As the chief physician in the radiology department of the rst afliated hospital of Sun Yat-Sen university, supervisor of PhD and the vice-director of diagnostic radiology, she devoted her life to diagnostic radiology of the head and neck and the

central nervous system. In addition, she has been awarded various kinds of titles in many academic organizations, such as the member of neurological and head and neck specialized group of Chinese Society of Radiology, and the chairman of head and neck specialized group of Radiological Society of Guangdong province.
She actively engages in numerous professional activities, regularly participating in academic conferences and continuing education events. Throughout her career, Prof. Yang has been a proponent of innovative imaging techniques, diagnostic approaches, and new ideas, generously sharing her clinical experiences and insights with her peers and young doctors. Her work has signicantly advanced the eld of imaging diagnostics and techniques in China, particularly within Guangdong province.
Over the years, Prof. Yang has authored and co-authored over 100 scientic research papers published in both domestic and international journals.

Christina Andica
Christina Andica, MD, PhD, is an Indonesian Junior Associate Professor at the Faculty of Health Data Science, Juntendo University, and the Department of Radiology at Juntendo University Graduate School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan (Fig.23.4). She completed the Indonesian Board Examination in Radiology and graduated as a Diagnostic Radiologist from Padjadjaran University in Bandung, Indonesia, in 2014. In 2020, she earned her PhD from Juntendo University and then served as a postdoctoral fellow under the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science for 2 years. Her research focuses on leveraging advanced diffusion MRI and myelin imaging to explore brain microstructural changes in neuropsychiatric diseases. She has published over 90 peer-reviewed papers and has received multiple prestigious awards from both Japanese and international radiological societies, including the Kato Prize from the Japanese Society of Neuroradiology, the Magna Cum Laude from the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, and a Certicate of Merit from the Radiological Society of North America.

In Indonesia, women have made notable progress in the eld of neuroradiology, with many female radiologists holding key positions in academic and clinical envi­ronments. However, one area that still requires improvement is the involvement of female neuroradiologists in research. I view research as a critical component in advancing patient care, especially in early diagnosis and personalized treatment strategies. This belief motivated me to pursue my research career in Japan, where I

have had the privilege of learning from leading experts in the eld. In Japan, while neuroradiology remains predominantly male-dominated, there is a growing aware­ness of the need for greater gender diversity. My experience here has been incredi­bly enriching, providing me with invaluable skills and knowledge. Now, I feel it is time to give back to my home country, Indonesia, by fostering research collabora­tion between Japan and Indonesia, particularly by empowering female researchers. I rmly believe that by strengthening research ties, we can not only enhance the eld of neuroradiology but also inspire more women to take on leadership roles in this important area.

Dr Sri Andreani Utomo, Sp.Rad (K)N-KL. is a Staff and senior lecturer in Dept. of Radiology, Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia (Fig.23.5)

It is interesting for the female neuroradiologists in Indonesia.
I have been a neuroradiologist since 2002, at that time the number of neuroradi­ologists in Indonesia was just only six persons, three females and three males.
Since then, the number of female neuroradiologists increased; now, in Indonesia we have 26 neuroradiologists, mostly females with only 8 male neuroradiologists.
Not just neuroradiologists, the radiologists in Indonesia right now are mostly females rather than males.

Dr Sneh Bhargava
Dr Sneh Bhargava was the rst woman radiologist in India. She was born in 1930 and received her medical degree from Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, India. Dr Bhargava completed a fellowship in diagnostic radiology from the Imperial College, London, UK, and was awarded a DMRD from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. She joined the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the apex medical institute in India, as assistant professor, and in due course ascended to the rank of Professor and was appointed Chair of the department of radiology. She was the rst and the only woman to be named the Director of this premier institute. She has served many national and international radiology commit­tees including the Indian Radiology and Imaging Association, of which she was the president. During her career, she has worked relentlessly for the advancement of education and patient care at her institute and in the country at large, which includes the establishment of the rst ever CT scanner in India in the year 1978. She was instrumental in advancing neuroradiology during her leadership at AIIMS.She has been awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, and was awarded honorary membership of the RSNA in the year 2018.
Other prominent radiologists who have worked or are working in the eld of Neuroradiology in India are Prof. Neera Kohli (Chair at Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University, Lucknow India), Prof. Manorama Berry (former Chair at AIIMS), Prof. Sima Mukhopadhyay (former Chair at AIIMS), Prof. Sushma Vashisht (former Chair at AIIMS), Prof. Ratni Gujral (former Chair at SGPGIMS, Lucknow), Prof. Sudha Suri (former Chair at PGIMS, Chandigarh), Prof Veena Chaudhary (former Chair Mualana Azad Medical College, Delhi), and Prof. Meher Ursekar (Mumbai).
Dr Varsha Joshi is another prominent Neuroradiologist in India who is currently a senior consultant at Vijaya Diagnostic Center, Hyderabad. She is the past President of the Indian Society of Head and Neck Radiology and is now the international liaison ofcer for the society. Other prominent current women neuroradiologists in India are Prof. Rose Dawn Bharath (NIMHANS), Prof. Hima Pendharkar (NIMHANS), Dr Rashmi Saraf (Mumbai), Dr Sunithi Mani, Dr Arpita Sahu, and Dr Manisha Joshi.

I am Kumiko Ando, MD, PhD I graduated from Saga Medical School in 1990, worked at Hyogo College of Medicine Hospital, and now serve as the Director of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Kobe City Medical Center General Hospital (Fig.23.6). Like many radiologists in Japan, I practice as a general radiolo­gist with a specialty in neuroradiology, particularly pediatric neuroradiology.
I am not an active researcher, and my scientic contributions are limited.

However, perhaps because I have been fortunate to have several good friends in Japan and across Asia and other parts of the world, I am honored to compile the Japan Chapter for the Chapter of Women in Neuroradiology in Asia Oceania of the WFNRS.
The history of female membership in the Japanese Society of Neuroradiology (JSNR) shows that the rst presentation by a female lead presenter was given by Yuko Ono (Saito) in 1978 at the seventh Annual Meeting on CT and angiography in cerebellopontine angle tumors. By 2024, about 20% of JSNR members are women.

Women have recently represented 23–30% of presentations and lectures. Among the 75 council members, 11 are women, and of the 17 board members, 2 are women.
In 2015, Dr Yoko Kato from Fujita Health University Neurosurgery became the rst female president of the JSNR Annual Meeting. In 2017, the Diversity Promotion Committee was established, with me as chair, aiming to create an inclusive environ­ment for women and people from diverse backgrounds.
I have not felt that I have faced any discrimination as a woman when participat­ing in academic activities at the Japanese Society of Neuroradiology or any other neuroradiology society worldwide, yet men still dominate leadership roles espe­cially in Japan.
This is partly because household, childcare, and caregiving duties often fall on women, and support systems like babysitters are lacking in Japan. And as a result, female doctors in their 30s and 40s are often forced to interrupt their careers due to childcare responsibilities. Encouragingly, younger generations increasingly embrace shared caregiving responsibilities.
As a result, many young female neuroradiologists continue their careers even after marriage and childbirth. And more women are becoming leaders in hospitals and research institutions, contributing to clinical practice, research, and mentoring. The number of female university professors in neuroradiology is increasing.
I believe that supporting radiologists facing various challenges, regardless of gender, will contribute to the development of neuroradiology. Let each of us offer small acts of support to them!
Below, I introduce some female neuroradiologists in Japan who have been active over the past 60 years, limited to those I have interacted with. Many more are con­tributing signicantly, including those who succeeded after studying in Japan, such as Dr Tha Khin Khin from Myanmar (Hokkaido University) and Dr Andica from Indonesia (Juntendo University).

Pioneers

Yuko Ono, MD, PhD.
Prof. Yuko Ono graduated from Tokyo Women’s Medical University and later stud­ied at the University of Mainz in Germany (Fig.23.7). She became a professor in the Department of Radiology at Tokyo Women’s Medical University and was the rst female lead presenter at a JSNR meeting. She has published 142 original papers, 92 review articles, and 20 textbooks. Her research using various imaging techniques, such as angiography, CT, MRI, and MRS, has signicantly contributed to understanding conditions like cerebrovascular disease, gliomas, normal pressure hydrocephalus, and multiple sclerosis.
Her notable studies include the assessment of cerebrospinal uid ow patterns using the time-spatial labeling inversion pulse technique with 3T MRI, the useful­ness of 4D-CTA in detecting cerebral dural sinus occlusion or stenosis with

collateral pathways, and the optimal visualization of multiple brain metastases for gamma knife radiosurgery.
Here is a message from Yuko Ono:
After 2years of training in radiation therapy, diagnostic radiology, and nuclear medicine, I began training in the Department of Neuroradiology in 1975 at the Neurological Institute in Tokyo Women’s Medical University Hospitals, where there are Departments of Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Neuroradiology. At that time, brain imaging relied on skull X-rays, cerebral angiography, and pneumoen­cephalography. In August 1975, the Japanese rst clinical CT scanner was installed at our facility. The rst case involved a patient with malignant melanoma, and the CT images revealed multiple small metastases that they could not detect by previous cerebral angiography. This marked the beginning of a new era in neuroradiological diagnosis.
From then on, CT became a routine method alongside other imaging techniques. Managing each type of examination, patient care, reporting, and research presenta­tions were simultaneously challenging but enriching. It was a great experience for me to learn many diverse and important cases in the only one Institute of Neurology in Tokyo.
During my practical studies in the Mainz University Hospital in Germany in 1982, I attended the rst European MR Conference. At that time, the utility of MRI was still debated, but it soon became a crucial diagnostic tool alongside CT.

Experiencing various diagnostic techniques and studying classical methods pro­vided a strong foundation for my career as a neuroradiologist. Although some tradi­tional techniques, like pneumoencephalography, are no longer used, they helped me understand the modern diagnostic tools easily, considering the dynamic state of the cerebrospinal uid or detail anatomical knowledge of the arteries and veins. I believe that this knowledge remains invaluable.
There are few independent neuroradiology departments in Japan, which was a source of pride for my mentor, Dr Kobayashi. However, due to hospital restructur­ing, the Department of Neuroradiology was merged into diagnostic imaging. Although the nature of the work remains the same, this change felt like a loss of identity for those of us in neuroradiology.
After retiring in 2014, I have been working at Ebina General Hospital, special­izing in diagnostic neuroradiology. Remote image reading has also become possi­ble, which I have started using as needed.
At the JRS Annual Meeting, I see the incredible advancements in imaging tech­nology and AI, which motivate me to continue working as a neuroradiologist.
Imaging diagnosis is an excellent profession for women, as much of the work can be done remotely. However, obtaining a specialist qualication alone is not enough; continuous training is essential to take responsibility for diagnoses. In neu­roradiology, trust between radiologists, neurosurgeons, and neurologists is crucial, requiring knowledge and communication skills to aid in treatment decisions.
Women often face the challenges of balancing childcare and professional duties, but being a physician also offers a stable economic foundation; therefore, it could be possible to have a maid or a sitter. I hope my experiences serve as a reference for women who wish to continue their careers in medicine and leadership.
Prof. Noriko Aida, MD, PhD.
Prof. Noriko Aida graduated from Yokohama City University in 1984, and since the 1990s, has been actively working at the Kanagawa Children’s Medical Center (Fig.23.8). As a leader in pediatric neuroradiology in Japan, she has made numer­ous research contributions to the eld and mentored many pediatric neuroradiolo­gists. She also served as the President of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Radiology.
Among her many published papers, the following received the Kato Award from the Japanese Society of Neuroradiology (JSNR):
