The Swiss Society forNeuroradiology (SGNR/SSNR)
The Swiss Society for Neuroradiology (called in German: Schweizerische Gesellschaft für Neuroradiologie [SGNR] and in French: Société Suisse de Neuroradiologie [SSNR]) was founded in 1988 by a group of Swiss Neuroradiologists composed of Anton Valavanis and Othmar Schubiger from Zurich, Peter Huber from Bern, and Ernst Radu from Basel [1]. This was nalized on July 25, 1989in Zurich at the Hotel Schweizerhof. These early pioneers would constitute the nucleus that would create neuroradiology as we know it today in Switzerland. Initially, two main centers would form the nucleus for training and Science, Bern and Zurich. The rst president of the society was therefore Peter Huber (1989–1993), followed by Anton Valavanis (1993–1999) and Othmar Schubiger (1999–2001), followed by Anton Valavanis again (2001–2010), then by Luca Remonda (2010–2018), Jan Gralla (2018–2020), Karl-Olof Lövblad (2020–2022), then today Isabel Wanke. Currently, the SGNR has a committee with ten members that meet at regular

intervals and are appointed every 2years. The society has two awards: The yearly Peter Huber award, which is given for the best original research by a young neuro­radiologist, and the Anton Valavanis Medal, which honors a leading neuroradiolo­gist who will have furthered the specialty along the lines dened by Anton Valavanis. The Valavanis Medal has been given twice to Professors Luc Picard and Georges Rodesch from France. The society also provides support in the form of help to orga­nize fellowships in both diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology. The society is currently presided over by Professor Isabel Wanke from Zurich, and the commit­tee has Profs Jan Gralla, Luca Remonda, and Karl Olof Lövblad as past presidents. Initial honorary members of the society were Professors Josef Wellauer, Gazi Yasargil, and Ugo Fisch, all from Zurich due to their immense contributions and support to the Society and the Specialty. The Society additionally has working groups that deal with various thematics of neuroradiology: there are working groups for Advanced neuroimaging (chaired by Prof Roland Wiest from Bern), Head and Neck Radiology (Prof Franca Wagner, Bern), interventional neuroradiology (Prof Pasquale Mordasini, St. Gallen), Spinal imaging (Dr Alessandro Cianfoni, Lugano), Pediatric Neuroradiology (Aikaterina Fitsiori, Geneva). The Society is afliated with the ESNR and the WFNRS.
Before theSwiss Society ofNeuroradiology
Before becoming a clearly dened and regulated subspecialityin Switzerland, Neuroradiology had been performed in various forms, in an especially innovative way, even before the systemic structure that we know today [2]. Especially, angio­graphic techniques had been developed in great part by the neurosurgeon MG Yasargil at the University Hospital in Zurich under the guidance of Professor Hugo Krayenbühl [35]. Additionally, techniques such as myelography were widely used for diagnostic procedures of the CNS [6]. It was with the advent of axial imaging techniques that radiology, especially neuroradiology, would see great advances: the rst CT would be installed in Basel at the Bürgerspital [7] in 1973, and the rst MR units would appear in 1982in Geneva and Zurich [2].
The rst Swiss professor for Neuroradiology was Peter Huber from Bern [8,
9], who was a neurosurgeon by training and who had written the nal version of
the classic Krayenbuhl monograph on angiography: Peter Huber had won the Robert Bing Prize in 1968 and would retire in 1992; Peter Huber would be suc­ceeded by Professor Gerhard Schroth [10]. The division, which would become the institute it is today under the leadership of Gerhard Schroth, a specialist in Neurology and Neuroradiology who had trained in Tübingen in Germany; Gerhard Schroth had also spent 2years in Zürich with Anton Valavanis, and he would therefore develop intensively interventional techniques in Bern, especially for the treatment of stroke, as well as the use of MR techniques for improved diagnosis and management of patients with neurological diseases. The current chair of Neuroradiology in Bern is Prof Jan Gralla, who trained with Gerhard

Schroth. Functional imaging would be implemented with the installation of the Siemens Vision echo-planar scanner in the 1990s and would allow the clinical implementation of techniques such as DWI and fMRI.
Neuroradiology intheVarious Institutions andCantons
Neuroradiology would develop in a structured way in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, initially around interventional centers and specialists. The rst inde­pendent Institute for Neuroradiology was established in Switzerland under Prof Anton Valavanis [11, 12]; soon Bern would follow and the Neuroradiology Unit would become also an Institute of Neuroradiology under Prof G Schroth, who suc­ceeded P Huber, the rst Swiss Professor of Neuroradiology. Full professorships with independent divisions would be established in Geneva, Bern, and Zurich. The rst privately owned independent neuroradiology institute would be founded in Zurich by Professors Daniel Rüfenacht and Isabel Wanke, rst at the Hirslanden Klinik and then co-jointly at the Swiss Neuro Institute (SNRI).
The Zurich history of a close interaction between the basic and clinical Neurosciences and Neuroradiology is long: while Yasargil and Krayenbuhl per­fected cerebral angiography, Prof Wellauer would do the same for myelography: and as early as 1973, Dr. Othmar Schubiger would devote himself to neuroradiology and, as of 1977, exclusively; Othmar Schubiger would become the head of neurora­diology in Aarau between 1980 and 1986. Othmar Schubiger would then move to the Klinik, im Park in Zurich [13], being later succeeded in Aarau by A Mironov and L Remonda successively. The institute of Neuroradiology in Zurich would focus heavily on interventions of brain vascular malformations, the use of advanced MR techniques and Head and Neck imaging [14, 15], under the leadership of Prof Valavanis, Werner Wichmann; Spyros Kollias would introduce modern MR tech­niques such as fMRI and DTI at the Zurich institute [16]. Thierry Huisman would move to the USA as a pediatric neuroradiologist, rst at Johns Hopkins then at the Texas Children’s Hospital. Due to the high visibility achieved in interventional neu­roradiology by the Zurich institute [1720], a yearly course on interventional neu­roradiology was established by Anton Valavanis that helped establish Zurich as a center for neuro-vascular interventions. Building on the Zurich tradition in neuro­sciences, Anton Valavanis would help create the Zurich Clinical Neurocenter that he would direct for many years. The current head of Neuroradiology in Zurich is Dr. Zsolt Kulcsar who had trained in Hungary and in Switzerland with Daniel Rüfenacht in Geneva. The Institute in Bern would be a pioneer in the use of intra-arterial treat­ments of ischemic diseases such as stroke, using either at rst intra-arterial throm­bolysis or later thrombectomy. The Division in Geneva would concentrate efforts on the minimal invasive treatment of among others aneurysms and also of diseases of the spine. In Basel, EW Radü was the director of the unit of neuroradiology at the Kantonsspital Basel as of 1984, and became Privat docent in 1986 and nally pro­fessor; EW Radü would concentrate his academic efforts on the study of

inammatory diseases of the CNS such as Multiple Sclerosis, being succeeded by Christoph Stippich from Heidelberg who would leave for Zurich. The current pro­fessor in neuroradiology in Basel is Professor Marios Psychogios.
In the French part of Switzerland, Neuroradiology was structured initially slightly differently; in Geneva, neuroradiology was established at rst in the neu­rology department as early as 1963 and, after a succession of three neuroradiolo­gists, in 1972, Dr. Marcelle Megret was nominated chief of this division [21]. At the Cantonal Hospital of Geneva initially, the CT was installed on the second oor of the Geneva Cantonal Hospital in Neurology and the division was held by Drs. Marcelle Megret and Jacqueline Delavelle; upon the nomination of François Terrier in radiology, the CT was integrated in radiology; this, together with the acquisition of the MR unit, would allow full diagnostic work-up of neurological patients and neuroradiology would become a clearly dened unit of the division of radiology in 1989. With the growth of newer techniques, it became necessary also to establish knowledge in interventional neuroradiology: hence Daniel Rüfenacht, a scholar of Peter Huber in Bern and Jean-Jacues Merland in Paris [2224], and who was working in Minnesota would be recruited to Geneva in 1992 and would be the rst academic division head and professor in neuroradiol­ogy in the French part of Switzerland. In Lausanne, neuroradiology was inte­grated in Radiology under the direction of Drs. Antoine Uske and Reto Meuli. Reto Meuli, a neuroradiologist with an extensive background in MR physics, would eventually also become the head of the radiology division of the CHUV in Lausanne. A notable trainee from Lausanne is Max Wintermark who is currently at the MD Anderson Institute and editor-in- chief of the AJNR. Prof Daniel Rüfenacht and Antoine Uske, who had both worked in Parie with Jean-Jacques Merland, would thus establish interventional neuroradiology in the French­speaking part of Switzerland and would collaborate closely during the establish­ment of their respective divisions. This was also central to the establishment of the “centre romand de neurochirurgie” (neurosurgical center of the French­speaking area (Romandie). The excellence in MRI in Geneva and Lausanne would help establish the Centre d’imagerie Bio-médicale (CIBM.ch) that exists to this day as a platform for basic and clinical research and for translational imaging in the Romandie. Professor Daniel Rüfenacht would introduce a proto­type at panel angiography room in 2008, the salle 37, which remained in func­tion until 2023. Daniel Rüfenacht also would introduce and popularize minimally invasive techniques such as vertebroplasty in Switzerland and also establish the international intracranial Stent meeting that runs until this day as well as founded the ESMINT society [25]. Among his notable trainees is Philippe Gailloud, cur­rently at the Johns Hospkins University. He would briey found the Service Neuro-interventionnel at the HUG, before moving to Zurich. Upon his departure, the Neuro-interventional division would be re-fusioned with diagnostic neurora­diology and the division would be led by Prof Karl-Olof Lövblad as of 2008; Karl-Olof Lövblad, having trained in Bern under the supervision of Gerhard Schroth, would do a fellowship in Boston with Professors Robert Edelman and Steven Warach, during which he would participate in the early pioneering studies

on the clinical use of diffusion-weighted MR imaging. Additionally, after mov­ing to Geneva and working for Daniel Rüfenacht, under his leadership, distinct units for diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology would be created. The interventional unit would be led by Prof Vitor Mendes Pereira (now in Toronto), Dr. Zsolt Kulcsar (nor in Zurich) and is currently led by Paolo Machi; the diag­nostic Unit was led successively by Drs. Jacqueline Delavelle, Karl Olof Lövblad, and Maria Vargas and is now led by Professor Felix Kurz. In the italian part of Switzerland, the Tessin, in Lugano, Neuroradiology was led by Claude Merenda (1941–2022), who introduced interventional neuroradiology techniques; upon the creation of the Neurocenter in Lugano under the auspices of Professor Claudio Bassetti, Neuroradiology as a division was formalized by Alessandro Cianfoni, who built up an impressive team encompassing all modalities of diag­nostic and interventional neuroradiology; Professor Cianfoni has a strong focus on spinal interventions.
The Swiss Title inNeuroradiology
In 1991, the subtitle of Neuroradiology was created and validated by the FMH (Foederatio Medicorum Helveticorum, the Swiss Medical Society), thereby offering physicians trained in radiology the possibility to subspecialize accord­ing to a clear curriculum. Neuroradiology was thus quickly recognized as a sub­specialty and board examinations were established, the rst being held in Zurich in 1997. Initially this subspecialty comprised all of neuroradiology, both diag­nostic and interventional. Due to a reform of the Swiss medical specialty system, in 1997, neuroradiology was elevated to a full specialty and remained so for 4years until 2001. When the nal revision of the Swiss medical specialties was nalized in 2001, Neuroradiology became composed of two subspecialities (Schwerpunkt in German; formation approfondie in French) of radiology, one for diagnostic and one for interventional (called invasive). Both subspecialities require initially to have obtained a certication as a specialist in radiology with additionally 2years of sub- specialization both in diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology at a postgraduate level with an oral exam for each sub-specialty; the prerequisite for obtaining the title in invasive neuroradiology being having rst obtained the sub-specialty in diagnostic neuroradiology. Training time in the subspecialty is at the moment 4years with, as stated above, 2years each in diag­nostic and interventional neuroradiology, 1 year in diagnostic neuroradiology can be accounted for during the training in diagnostic radiology if the curriculum is organized accordingly. The exact number of examinations and procedures per­formed are guided by a log-book. The Swiss Society of Neuroradiology manages the invasive (interventional) neuroradiology and co- manages the one in diagnos­tic Neuroradiology with the Swiss Society for Radiology. The training centers in Switzerland are recognized by the SIWF (the Swiss Institute for medical

training) which is a branch of the Swiss medical association (the FMH; fmh.ch). Currently the curricula are being reevaluated.
Building on a high technical expertise and clinical experience, Swiss neuroradi­ologists have helped advance the eld to become a fully established specialty that uses highly specialized techniques to improve patient outcomes. This has been done by the early clinical implementation of MR techniques and endovascular treatment modalities. Swiss neuroradiology thus works within the well-established connes of the Highly specialized Medicine concept in Switzerland and is present as a leader in all stroke centers. Currently, there are 8 stroke centers in Switzerland that can provide all diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for patients with diseases of the vessels of the CNS; additionally, there are currently 5 ultra-high-eld (7T) scanners in operation in Switzerland, which are in part devoted to research and clinical activi­ties for the benet of local patients.
Neuroradiology andResearch
The Swiss Society of Neuroradiology has always had a high academic prole, with a large and varied output in scientic publications by all its members [26, 27]. The Swiss Society of Neuroradiology has held Congresses initially alone and more and more in cooperation with the various societies that now compose the SFNCS (Swiss Federation of clinical Neurosciences) [28]. Neuroradiology also had an important role in the birth of the SFCNS: indeed, in 2009, under the leadership of Anton Valavanis, Claudio Bassetti Christian Hess, and Hildebrandt, the SFCNS was founded as a society covering all Swiss specialties involved in clinical neurosci­ence; the SFCNS hold its conference every 3years with all societies being present. In October 1989, the rst congress of the Swiss Society of Neuroradiology would take place at the University Hospital in Zurich. These congresses would take place on a yearly basis in different cities in Switzerland, with the local institution hosting them. Since the early 2000s, the meetings are organized jointly with other clinical neuro-societies. Switzerland has hosted the year’s ESNR congress four times: in 1983, in Bern with Professor Huber as president; in 1991, in Zurich with Anton Valavanis as President; in 2006, in Geneva with Daniel Rüfenacht; and in 2021, in Geneva again with Karl-Olof Lövblad [29]. Daniel Rüfenacht was one of the found­ing members of the ESMINT in 2007. Additionally, a training course in neuroradi­ology organized by the SSNR is held annually in Bern since 2005, which was initiated by Karl-Olof Lövblad in 2005.
The Swiss Society of Neuroradiology would edit its own yearly journal for a decade, Neuroradiologia Helvetica, before adopting Neuroradiology and Clinical Neuroradiology as its ofcial journals [30]. Current news of the Society are pub- lished on the website www.swissneuroradiology.ch. The society is also closely associated with the Journal Clinical and Translational Neurosciences that Anton Valavanis would help establish.

While the local academic specialties that existed initially (stroke in Bern, aneu­rysms and spine in Geneva, head and neck and AVM’s in Zurich, and inammatory diseases in Basel) that allowed for world class excellence in these centers due to their high visibility, these differences have almost entirely resolved with all centers offering today a full array of diagnostic and interventional techniques [31], the high level of expertise offered by the centers is an all-time high. This has allowed neuro­radiology in Switzerland to position itself strongly within the areas of Highly Specialized Medicine (HSM) specialties [32].

The Neuroradiological Society ofTaiwan

The Neuroradiological Society of Taiwan (hereinafter referred to as NRST) is con­sidered one of the youngest subspecialty medical societies within the Taiwan Neurological Society. Originally, the NRST stemmed from the Neuroradiology Group of the Taiwan Neurological Society. In those years, members from the group were appointed as representatives or elected as directors and supervisors to attend relevant meetings of the Neurological Society.
In 1994, Professor Tsuen Chang, Professor Takahashi from Japan, Professor Sage from Australia, and Professor Chang from South Korea, jointly deliberated on the formation of the Asian-Oceanian Congress of Neuroradiology and Head & Neck Radiology (AOCNHNR). At that time, national membership was a prerequisite for joining the World Federation of Neuroradiological Societies. Therefore, under the leadership of Professor Tsuen Chang and in collaboration with the leading neurora­diology experts in Taiwan at the time, a preparatory committee for the NRST was formed to establish a formal society and actively participate in international aca­demic and organizational activities.
After several meetings and with the assistance of the Department of Social Affairs of the Ministry of the Interior, the NRST was ofcially established in March
1995. At the time of establishment, the society had 64 founding members, with Professor Tsuen Chang elected as the rst chairperson. Professor Tsuen Chang also represented Taiwan in attending the rst AOCNHNR held in Kumamoto, Japan in the same year. Additionally, the society was honored to obtain the hosting rights for the second conference, which was scheduled to be held in Taipei in 1997.
In 1997, the second AOCNHNR conference held in Taipei witnessed the partici­pation of approximately 260 attendees from both domestic and international regions.
