Dr Sung Soo Ahn works at Severance Hospital and has established an unparal­leled track record in brain tumor research [1315] (Fig.23.29). Her robust research output and extensive research network contribute signicantly to the eld. She pre­viously served as the treasurer of KSNR and is currently leading the Brain Function Research Study Group under KSNR.
Dr Koung Mi Kang works at Seoul National University Hospital (Fig.23.30). She has published high-quality research in neuroimaging [1620]. She previously served as the chair of the publication committee of KSNR and is currently an asso­ciated editor of the British Journal of Radiology.
Dr Na-Young Shin works at Severance Hospital and has produced high-quality research publications, primarily focused on Parkinson’s disease imaging and peri­vascular space imaging [21] (Fig.23.31). She previously served as the secretary for general affairs of KSNR.
Dr Yun Jung Bae works at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital and has consistently published excellent research ndings related to Parkinson’s disease imaging and glymphatic imaging [2224] (Fig.23.32). She currently serves as the chair of the public communication committee for KSNR.
Dr Roh-Eul Yoo works at Seoul National University Hospital. She has made sig­nicant contributions to the neuroradiology literature with publications in various subspecialties, including glymphatic MRI and perfusion-weighted imaging [2528] (Fig.23.33). She is currently a Deputy Editor of European Radiology and serves as the chair of the education committee of KSNR.

Dr Ji Eun Park works at Asan Medical Center in Seoul and has built an unrivaled research portfolio in brain tumors and articial intelligence [2933] (Fig.23.34). Her exceptional interpersonal skills have made signicant contributions to interna­tional collaborative networks. She is the deputy editor for neuro-oncology for JMRI and formerly served as the secretary of the research committee for KSNR and the secretary of the scientic program committee for the Korean Congress of Radiology.
Dr Mina Park works at Gangnam Severance Hospital and has conducted impor­tant research, mainly on dementia imaging and meningeal lymphatic imaging [34,
35] (Fig.23.35). She serves on the Journal of Neuroradiology editorial board and is
currently the secretary of the Brain Function Research Study Group under KSNR.
This new generation of talented female neuroradiologists is making signicant contribution to the eld, both in Korea and internationally. They are expanding their roles and inuence by pursuing opportunities abroad, with some even relocating to other countries to further their careers. One notable example is Dr Yoon Sung Choi at the National University of Singapore, a renowned researcher in radiomics and articial intelligence applications for neuroimaging [36] (Fig. 23.36). She also serves as an editorial board member for KJR.

Persistent Problems
Despite increased participation of women in neuroradiology research and KSNR societies over the past 30years and a more favorable socio-cultural climate within medical institutions, female neuroradiologists in Korea still face challenges. These include a severe shortage of radiologists and the demanding work environment prevalent in Korean hospitals due to the increase in radiological examinations [37], which makes work-life balance difcult, coupled with the intense pressure of Korea’s education system and challenging childcare environment. Moreover, neuro­radiology generally has a higher workload compared to elds like breast imaging, which female radiologists traditionally favor. These factors discourage young radi­ologists from pursuing neuroradiology.
Conclusion
The history of female participation in neuroradiology in Korea has undergone a dramatic transformation in a relatively short period, with an increasing number of women taking on prominent roles in research and leadership. While the future is somewhat uncertain due to the current shortage of radiologists in Korea and the persistent socio-cultural challenges faced by female physicians, the distinction between male and female radiologists is already diminishing in terms of achieve­ments. In the future, gender will likely become irrelevant, even regarding leadership and governance within the eld.

Celebrating Pioneering Women inNeuroradiology: Achievements fromtheSoutheast Asia Region
Let us delve into the past, present, and future prospects of women in neuroradiology in Malaysia and appreciate their signicant contributions to the eld.
According to the National Specialist Registrar in Malaysia, the subspecialty of neuroradiology remains within a special interest group in Clinical Radiology. However, it does not stop the advancement of subspecialty neuroradiology training and research in this eld. The Neuroradiologist training in Malaysia was initially done overseas. The rst neuroradiologist in Malaysia was Prof. Dr Norlisah Mohd

Ramli, who received her radiology training at Queens Medical Center in Nottingham in 1996. She further specialized in neuro-interventional radiology at Bicetre Hospital in Paris. She was also working as a consultant Neuroradiologist at Middlesbrough NHS Hospital in the UK before returning to Malaysia in 1999 to continue her post as a Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine University Malays and as a consultant neu­roradiologist at the University Malaya Medical Center, Kuala Lumpur. This robust academic foundation has positioned her as a leading gure in neuroradiology.
Professor Dr Norlisah Mohd Ramli
Professor Dr Norlisah Mohd Ramli’s research has made substantial contributions to the eld of neuroradiology and neuroimaging (Fig.23.37). Her work has focused on various aspects of traumatic brain injury (TBI), neurodegenerative disorders, and glioma, signicantly advancing understanding and treatment approaches.
In the realm of traumatic brain injury (TBI), Professor Norlisah has provided critical insights into the long-term effects of even mild TBI.Her research, published in journals such as Applied Neuropsychology: Adult and BMJ Open, has high­lighted the structural and cognitive impairments associated with mild TBI.Her studies have demonstrated the efcacy of neuropsychological assessments and cog­nitive rehabilitation for patients suffering from attention decits following mild TBI.Additionally, her longitudinal research on neuropsychological outcomes and neuro-metabolite changes has further elucidated the enduring impacts of TBI on brain function and structure.

Professor Norlisah’s contributions to the study of neurodegenerative disorders are equally impactful. Her research on Parkinson’s disease, detailed in publications like Neurology Asia and Parkinsonism & Related Disorders, has explored the effects of genetic mutations on disease progression and body composition. This work has implications for early detection and personalized treatment strategies. Furthermore, her development of an automated detection model for Alzheimer’s disease, as reported in Pattern Recognition Letters, represents a signicant advancement in diagnostic accuracy and early intervention for this debilitating condition.
In the area of glioma research, Professor Norlisah has made notable strides in understanding the role of lipidomics in glioma metabolism and aggressiveness. Her systematic reviews and studies in journals such as Metabolites and Academic Radiology have shed light on lipid alterations in glioma, aiming to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Additionally, her investigations into quantitative MRI and radiogenomic biomarkers, as published in NeuroImage: Clinical and The British Journal of Radiology, have enhanced the precision of glioma characteriza­tion and treatment strategies. Her research on novel imaging techniques, including chemical shift gradient echo sequences, has also contributed to improved detection and grading of gliomas.
Overall, Professor Dr Norlisah Mohd Ramli’s research has signicantly advanced the eld of neuroimaging, providing valuable insights into TBI, neurodegenerative disorders, and glioma. Her work enriches scientic understanding and has practical implications for enhancing patient diagnosis and treatment.
Professional Roles andAchievements
In her professional capacity, Prof. Dr Norlisah is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Imaging at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. She is also the President of the College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, and the Executive Councilor of the Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology. Her leadership roles extend to being the Co-Chair of the Quality, Safety, and Standards Committee. Her contributions to the eld have been recognized through numerous awards and honors, including the Merdeka Award in 2008 and several best publication awards from Universiti Malaya. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and has actively organized and directed neuroradiology workshops.
