from the SBNRDT. She was part of the Medimagem team from 1982 until 2005.
From 2008, she started working as a professor of radiology at the Faculty of
Medicine at UFAL (Alagoas).
Edla Chadrycki MD graduated with a degree in medicine from the Federal
University of Rio de Janeiro in 1979, followed by a medical residency at the same
university in 1982. With a career spanning from 1983 to the present, she brings
extensive experience and expertise to her role. Her work focuses on the medical
eld, particularly in medical radiology, with a dedication to cancer research and
treatment. As a public servant, she holds a position at the National Cancer Institute,
contributing to the advancement of knowledge and treatment in the eld of oncology.
Dr. Maria de Fátima Viana Vasco Aragao MD PhD (Fig.25.2) was also one of
the rst female neuroradiologists in Brazil. She graduated in Medicine from the
Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) in her hometown of Recife in 1987, followed by a Radiology Residency in the Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade de
São Paulo (USP) at Ribeirão Preto (1991). She did fellowships in CT, MRI and in
neuroradiology in Brazil at Med Imagem Hospital de Benecência Portuguesa de
São Paulo and also had the great opportunity to learn and be part of this group of
neuroradiologists at Med Imagem (1991–1993) with Dr. Sergio Santos Lima, Dra.
Maria Lucia Soares, Dr. Renato Mendonça, and Dr. Lazaro Amaral. Later, she completed a research fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital Center in NewYork in 1996

and 2008 with Drs Scott Atlas, Peter Som, Meng Law, and Thomas Naidich. In
2010, she completed her PhD in neuroscience at UFPE in Recife. She is a founding
member of the Brazilian Society of Neuroradiology (SBNR). She served as President
of the Pernambuco Radiology Society for two terms from 2014 to 2018, and as
Secretary of the Brazilian Society of Neuroradiology (SBNR) also for two terms
(2008–2010 and 2012–2014). She served as Second Secretary of the Executive
Board of the Brazilian College of Radiology (2019–2020). She was elected to the
position of Member at Large of the World Federation of Neuroradiological Societies
(WFNRS) for the 2018–2022 term and was subsequently re-elected to the same
position for the 2022–2026 term. Currently, she is an Adjunct professor of Radiology
in the Surgery Department and Permanent Professor in the Department of PostGraduation in Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Center for Medical
Sciences UFPE, Brazil. In 2016, Dr. Aragao led a group of researchers in their study
of Congenital Zika Virus Syndrome. Several articles were published including the
rst article in Magnetic Resonance Imaging describing this disease of which she
was the rst author, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ 2016;353:i1901).
Dr. Aragao received recognition for her work in the European Congress of Radiology
in Vienna (2017). She was also recognized during the 57th Annual Meeting of the
American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR 2019), in Boston, among the ASNR
neuroradiologists’ highlights (ASNR Member Spotlight). She and her research
group also described the injury found in the olfactory bulbs of COVID-19 patients
detected by MRI (2020) that was published in the American Journal of
Neuroradiology (Setembro de 2020, 41 (9) 1703-1706). She is member of many
International Societies and has lectured at many Radiology Meetings in Brazil as
well as in Vienna (European Congress of Radiology in 2017 and in 2018), Canada
(ASNR 2018), Colombia, Bolivia, Cuba, Portugal, Uruguay, Dominican Republic,
Porto Rico, Chile (SILAN), and Taiwan (XXI Symposium NeuroradiologicumWFNRS, 2018). Since 2024, she has been a member of the RSNA Educational
Exhibits Awards Committee Reviewer, as well as the RSNA Regional Committee
for Latin America (RCLA). Dr. Aragao’s maternal grandmother, her mother (Janete,
biologist), and almost all of his aunts had higher education degrees and worked in
their respective elds. Her great-aunt (Isaura Lemos Mesquita) was the rst female
doctor from Pernambuco state (Brazil), graduating from the Pernambuco School of
Medicine in 1935. Dr. Aragao is married to a doctor (Maurício) and is the mother of
two beloved sons, Lucas and João Pedro, and have the daugther-in-law Julia
(Lucas’s wife) who are all young doctors. She is also the doting grandmother of a
beloved baby boy (Luiz).
Dr. Fabiane Lorenzoni Sesti, MD, graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the
Pontical Catholic University of RGS in 1984. She is a specialist in radiology, having completed Medical Residency in 1987 at the Hospital São Lucas of the Catholic
University of Rio Grande do Sul (RGS). She earned the title of Specialist in

Neuroradiology and Imaging Diagnosis from the Brazilian College of Radiology. In
1991, she took a Fellowship at Med Imagem/Hosp Beneciencia Portuguesa de SP
with Dr. Sérgio Santos Lima and Renato Mendonça as mentors. In 1996, she took a
Research Fellowship in Neuroradiology at Mount Sinai Hospital in NewYork with
Dr. Scott Atlas and in Diagnosis with Head and Neck Image with Dr. Peter Som.
She is a Founding Member of the Brazilian Society of Neuroradiology, Associate of
the American Society of Neuroradiology, with Master’s Degree at the Catholic
University of RGS.She was Preceptor of the Radiology Medical Residency at the
Santa Casa De Misericórdia Hospital in Porto Alegre and in the Porto Alegre
Municipal Emergency Hospital, with an emphasis on teaching and research.
She is the Manager and Head of the Imaging Diagnostic Service at the Hospital
Dom Vicente Scherer da Santa Casa de Misericórdia, and Coordinator of the
Telemedicine Research Project in medical imaging, developed in partnership with
the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany and the European Union. She implemented and
coordinated the RUTE Project (University Telemedicine Network) at the
Telemedicine Center of the Santa Casa Hospital in Porto Alegre. She is the author
of articles published in indexed medical journals, and the English/Portuguese translator of several radiology books published by Art Med. She was Medical Director
and Head of the Imaging Diagnostic Service at the Municipal Emergency Hospital
of Porto Alegre, where she works as a radiologist to this day, as well as a neuroradiologist in Unimed RS’s own services.
Dr. Claudia Costa Leite MD PhD had her undergraduate medical degree from
Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP) in 1989, Brazil,
followed by a Radiology Residency in the Hospital das Clínicas from the same university and 1year as chief of the Radiology residency. She was a Neuroradiology
research fellow at the University of Texas at San Antonio from 1994 to 1996, supervised by Dr. Randy Jinkins. Dr. Leite went back to Brazil in 1997 to be a Radiology
attending at the Inrad of Hospital das Clínicas at FMUSP.In 1998, she nished and
presented her PhD thesis at FMUSP, and she became a professor at the Radiology
Department. Dr. Leite was the rst woman in the Radiology Discipline of that
University. From 2013 to 2016, she was also an associate professor at UNC at
Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She has supervised many undergraduate, postgraduate
and Radiology residents, has published 13 books and 27 book chapters, and has
more than 300 published articles. In 2020, she received the RSNA educator award.
Nowadays, she is an associate professor at the Department of Radiology and
Oncology at FMUSP, and furthermore, she is the chief of Research and Education
at Inrad of Hospital das Clínicas at FMUSP, Chief of Research of the Radiology
Residents at Hospital Sirio Libanes, and is a master Radiologist at Grupo Fleury.
Besides her career, she is a dedicated mother of two children, a wife, and a daughter.

Dr. Christiane Monteiro de Siqueira Campos MD (Fig.25.3) graduated in Medicine
from the Federal University of Pernambuco (Recife, Brazil) in 1990. She completed
her Medical Residency in Radiology at the Brasilia Radiologic Center in Brasilia in
1992. Dr. Campos started her fellowship in interventional peripheral and interventional Neuroradiology at Med Imagem-Benecência Portuguesa de São Paulo in 1993
and 1994, under the supervision program done by Dr. Renan Uacker and Dr. Ronie
Leo Piske, respectively. She was later invited to join the staff group as a medical assistant at the same institution. In 1998, she spent 6months in France at the Hospital Le
Kremlin Bicêtre working under the supervision of Professor Pierre Lasjaunias. During
this time, she published two papers on basilar tip anatomy and basilar tip aneurysms.
Dr. Campos obtained a Master’s Degree in Neurovascular Disease from the University
of Paris in 2002. In 2008, she began working in the Neuroradiology diagnostic area at
Med Imagem—Hospital da Benecencia Portuguesa de São Paulo after completing a
1-year diagnostic neuroradiology fellowship at the same institution (Med Imagem),
where she continues to practice. She currently serves as the scientic coordinator of
the Interventional Neuroradiology Department at Benecência Portuguesa de Sao
Paulo. Dr. Campos is a member of several specialty societies, including the Sociedade
Brasileira de Neuroradiologia (SBNR), Sociedade Paulista de Radiologia (SPR), and
the Brazilian College of Radiology. In 2021, she received her Diploma in Diagnostic
Neuroradiology from the European Society of Neuroradiology (EDiNR). She has
authored more than 50 scientic papers in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to
various book chapters dedicated to radiology and neuroradiology. Dr. Campos has
delivered over 100 lectures at international and national meetings in the elds of radiology, neurology, neurosurgery, and oncology.

Dr Lara Brandão MD (Fig.25.4) went to medical school at the Fluminense
Federal University in Niteroi (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)—the city in which she was
born. She did her residency in radiology at the Federal University of Rio De Janeiro
(UFRJ). A year after nishing her residency, she spent a month at the UCLA in the
Neuroradiology Department as a visiting fellow. At that time, Dr. Benson was the
chairman of the Department. A year later, she did another Fellowship in
Neuroradiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, USA, where she
spent 3months. Dr. Gilberto Gonzalez was then the chairman of the department.
That was a great experience for her. She attended every American Society of
Neuroradiology (ASNR) meeting from 1999 to 2019. She also spoke at that meeting
three times and became a member of the ASNR.In 2022, she was successful in the
exam to become a member of the European Society of Neuroradiology that was
held in Lisbon—qualifying her to be a member of the ESNR.Dr. Lara is a former
president of the Brazilian Society of Neuroradiology. She was also the neuroradiologist responsible for the Neuroradiology Scientic Program for the Brazilian
College of Radiology, meeting for four consecutive years. She directed a yearly
neuroimaging course in Rio De Janeiro from 2004 to 2019, inviting many distinguished speakers to share the podium with her, such as Dr. James Barkovich, Dr.
James Smirniotopoulos, Dr. David Yousem, Dr. Ellen Grant, and Dr. Aaron Field.
She has written a book entitled “MR Spectroscopy of the Brain,” published by
Lippincott Raven and translated into three languages: Portuguese, English, and
Chinese. She has also been the guest editor for some issues of the Magnetic

Resonance Imaging (MRI) Clinics of North America and Neuroimaging Clinics
(NIC) of North America, having published many articles in both. Dr. Lara Brandão
has given lectures in many radiologic meetings in Brazil as well as in the US,
Mexico, Aruba, Peru, and Prague. She is now Chief of Neuroradiology at the clinic
Magnetic Resonance Institute, DR Lara Brandão in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
Dr. Alessandra Mertens Brainer Lima MD PhD (Fig.25.5) graduated in Medicine
from the University of Pernambuco (UPE), completing a Medical residency in
General Radiology at the Barão de Lucena Public Hospital/SUS/Pernambuco, followed by obtaining a specialist title in Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging from the
Brazilian College of Radiology (CBR). She expanded my knowledge through
internships in neuroradiology at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and at the
Santa Casa de Misericórdia Hospital in São Paulo, earning a specialist certication
in Neuroradiology, endorsed by the Brazilian Society of Neuroradiology (SBNR)
and the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB). Her academic journey continued
with a Master’s degree from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Pernambuco
(FIOCRUZ/PE) with the thesis ‘Analysis of the Association Between the Presence
of Structural Brain Lesions and the Occurrence of Epileptic Seizures and Epilepsy’.
She achieved international recognition in neuroradiology by passing the exams for
the European Diploma in Neuroradiology (EDiNR), granted by the European Board
of Neuroradiology. In her scientic trajectory, she highlights the collaboration with
Dr. Maria de Fatima Aragão’s group in the analysis of images of children with Zika
virus-related microcephaly at the start of the epidemic in Northeast Brazil, she
joined the Microcephaly Epidemic Research Group (MERG), a team of scientists
dedicated to the study of Congenital Zika Syndrome. She developed the doctoral

thesis “MRI in children with Zika-related microcephaly at the end of the myelination period: association between structural lesions and neurological ndings,”
through which she completed her PhD at UPE.
Dr. Natacha Calheiros de Lima Petribu MD PhD (Fig.25.6) born in Recife (28/
November/1973–8/August/2025), Brazil, was a radiologist dedicated to public service, teaching, and research. A graduate of Federal University of Pernambuco, she
trained and mentored many young radiologists as coordinator of the Radiology
Residency Program at Barão de Lucena Hospital. She earned her MSc and PhD at
IMIP (Instituto de Medicina Integral Professor Fernando Figueira), contributed to
the Pernambuco Radiology Society and RSNA, and published pioneering work on
congenital microcephaly during the Zika virus epidemic. The results of her study
were presented at the RSNA Conference in 2014, in Chicago, IL, and later published in the British Medical Journal in 2017 (BMJ 2017; 359: j4188| doi:10.1136/
bmj.j4188), reporting her observations on the behavior and evolution of intracranial
calcications in affected patients. Despite a long battle against cancer, she lived
with resilience and creativity, expressing her passion for dance and creating “Innity
by Naty” handcrafted candles. Since her passing in August 2025, she has been
remembered for her devotion to medicine, her students, and her family, leaving a
legacy of faith, strength, and inspiration. An unfullled dream of Natacha’s, which
friends and family will try to embrace, is a social project to support children and
adolescents with disabilities, especially those with after-effects of the Zika virus.
The loving memory and the nurturing faith of Natacha will remain as a strong ame

to warm and illuminate the lives of her husband André, her children Vinícius (23),
Soa (17), Liz (7), and the countless friends whose hearts she touches.
History ofWomen Neuroradiologists inPeru
Most Inuential Female Peruvian Neuroradiologist Doctors
The history and advancement of neurological, radiological, and neurosurgical sciences are closely related to that of neuroradiology. In the following paragraphs, we
intend to recapitulate and acknowledge female doctors whose dedication and contribution to the eld have led to its advancement and recognition.
Dr. Raquel del Carpio O’Donovan, who was born in Lima and graduated from
Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, is undoubtedly one of the most renowned
and inuential Peruvian Neuroradiologists. After training in the USA and moving to
Canada, she settled in McGill University, where she established a very prosperous

practice in Academic Neuroradiology. She has helped a signicant number of medical professionals to advance in their radiological careers providing both mentorship
and sponsorship. In 2022, she was elected Honorary President by the World
Federation of Neuroradiological Societies during the AJNR annual meeting and
XXIII WFNRS Symposium Neuroradiologicum, held in NewYork. In 2024, Dr.
Del Carpio was awarded the Order of Canada, which is the highest civil honor and
cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System. It recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
Dr. María Elizabeth Morón Cabrera graduated from the Universidad Nacional
San Luis Gonzaga de Ica and pursued further training in radiology at the Hospital
Nacional Edgardo Rebagliati under the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos
Residency Program. She is currently working at this institution, the largest tertiary
medical center in Lima. For the last 20years, she has extensively taught medical
residents not only from the eld of radiology but from many other clinical and surgical programs. She has shaped the careers of many young residents and doctors and
always has a teaching case to share. In her free time, she enjoys cooking and spending time with her husband and two daughters.

Dr. Romy Ames (Fig. 25.7) was born in Huancayo-Perú. She graduated from
Medicine at the Universidad Peruana Los Andes (UPLA) and completed her medical residency at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM), specializing in radiology at the Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplasicas
(INEN), the largest oncologic center in Peru. Her interest in neuroimaging soon led
her to look for an institution where she could continue specializing, and she successfully obtained a research fellowship degree at the UNC Hospital located in
North Carolina, USA.On completion, she returned to Peru to apply what she had
learned. Additionally, she obtained a Master’s Degree in Clinical Epidemiology at
Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia and a Master’s Degree in Health
Management at ESAN Graduate School of Business. She is committed to the academic training of future doctors, which is why she directs the medical residency
program at the institutions where she works. She actively participates in multidisciplinary meetings of oncological patients with tumors of the CNS.She is a recurrent
lecturer at local and national meetings. She likes spending time with her family,
exercising, and eating Italian food. She shares her time between her passion, neuroradiology, and being the mother of two young girls.
