Pina Sanelli, MD, FAAR, FACR, 2018–2019
Pina Sanelli (Fig. 26.7) is a Professor of Radiology at the Donald and Barbara
Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell where she serves as the Vice Chair
of Research, and Professor in the Institute of Health System Science at the Feinstein
Institutes for Medical Research. She is a Past President of the ASNR, the ENRS,
and the Alliance for Health Services Research (RAHSR), and served on the Board
of Directors for the ASNR, AAR, and ARRS.Dr. Sanelli has performed exceptional
technology assessment and clinical effectiveness and outcomes-based research on
advanced imaging techniques in patients with cerebrovascular diseases, particularly
acute stroke, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, and chronic cerebral ischemia.
In recognition, she received the Radiology Alliance for Health Services Research
(RAHSR) Achievement Award for Outstanding Contributions in Research. Dr.
Sanelli is the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Harvey L.Neiman Health Policy
Institute’s PRIME (Policy Research and Imaging Effectiveness) Center, sponsored
by the ACR.She established the Value of Imaging through Comparative Effectiveness
(VOICE) program sponsored by the RSNA and the Comparative Effectiveness
Research Training (CERT) program jointly sponsored by the RSNA, ASNR, SIR,
and SNMMI.

Tina Young Poussaint (Fig. 26.8) is the Radiologist-in-Chief and the Lionel
W. Young Chair in Radiology at Boston Children’s Hospital and a Professor of
Radiology at the Harvard Medical School (HMS). She is a Past President of the
ASNR and ASPNR and an ASPNR Gold Medal recipient. She has served as Past
Chair of the Radiology Section of the National Medical Association and is also a
Fellow of the ASPNR and ACR.Dr. Poussaint is internationally renowned for her
research in pediatric brain tumor imaging with a focus on correlation of imaging
features with pediatric brain tumor molecular subtypes and the creation and implementation of innovative neuroimaging research protocols for pediatric brain tumor
clinical trials. She is Principal Investigator (PI) and Director of the Neuroimaging
Center (NIC) of the NIH-funded Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium (PBTC) and is
Director of BCH Neuro-Oncologic Imaging.

Erin Simon Schwartz (Fig.26.9) is Chief of the Division of Neuroradiology and
Associate Chair for Radiology Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, at Children’s Hospital
of Philadelphia, as well as a Professor of Radiology at the Perelman School of
Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. She holds the Robert A Zimmerman
Endowed Chair in Pediatric Neuroradiology and is the Editor in Chief of Applied
Radiology. She is a Past President of the ASNR, ASPNR, ASSR, and ENRS.These
leadership experiences allowed her to promote greater trainee engagement and raise
awareness of the crucial role of diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology in
patient care. She was the founding Co-Chair of the ASNR’s Diversity and Inclusion
Committee. As an advocate for women in medicine, she oversaw the revision of
numerous society charters to embrace inclusivity, developed succession-planning
strategies, streamlined processes to increase sustainability, and reduced overhead to
help ensure the future of these vital organizations.

Yvonne W.Lui, MD, FACR, 2023–2024
Yvonne Lui (Fig.26.10) is Professor and Vice Chair of Research for the Department
of Radiology at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and the Vilcek Institute of
Graduate Biomedical Sciences. She is renowned for her research in articial intelligence and traumatic brain injury. She established deep learning-based MR image
reconstruction as a powerful method and oversaw the release of the fastMRI dataset,
the world’s most inuential collection of MR images and raw k-space elements. She
developed one of the rst programs for machine learning in radiology and oversees
a leading research program distinguished by cutting-edge imaging technology
development and innovative translational research. She is the collaboration lead on
major research partnerships, including the NYU Courant Institute and Center for
Data Science, Siemens Healthineers, and Facebook AI Research. Dr. Lui is a Past
President of the ASNR and of the NewYork Roentgen Society (NYRS). She was
the “voice of the AJNR” as its second podcast editor. She serves on the editorial
board of Frontiers for Young Minds, mentoring middle and high school students in
the peer-review process.

Yoshimi Anzai, MD, MPH, FACR, 2025–2026
Yoshimi Anzai (Fig.26.11) is a Professor of Radiology and Vice Chair of Quality
and Safety in Radiology at the University of Utah, where she previously served as
the Associate Chief Medical Quality Ofcer, as well as the Co-director of the
Women in Health, Medicine, and Sciences, and as the School of Medicine Academic
Senate representative. She has performed seminal research in head and neck cancer
imaging, neurodegenerative disease, and comparative effectiveness of medical
imaging. She is the President-Elect of ASNR and a Past President of the AAR and
AAWR.She has held many other leadership positions in the ASHNR, RSNA, ACR,
AAWR, and WNRS.She is a Deputy Editor for Radiology and a Co-director for the
ACQUIRE (Applying Comparative Effectiveness and Quality Improvement in
Research and Education) Workshop sponsored by the RSNA, ASNR, SNMMI, and
SIR.She has “opened the door” for minority and foreign medical graduate women
who pursue neuroradiology. As Dr. Anzai states, “We should keep in mind that we
learn and grow most when facing challenges. Enjoy your journeys and bring many
friends along the way. The experience you have and the connections you make are
the ultimate reward.”

Donatella Tampieri MD, FRCP(C)
Donatella Tampieri (Fig.26.12) is a Professor of Radiology, Medicine, and Surgery
and the Neuroradiology Section Lead at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada.
As Chair of the Montreal Neurological Institute for 18years, she created a cuttingedge Interventional Neuroradiology Section. She was the rst Canadian
Neuroradiologist to perform vertebroplasty in the mid-1990s, and to use the ow
diverter “Silk” for treating brain aneurysms in 2012. She received the Prix
d’Excellence en Innovation des Soins de Santé from La Direction du Développement
Professionnel Continue (DDPC) of the Fédération des Médecins Spécialistes du
Québec (FMSQ) in 2016. She is a Past President of the Canadian Society of
Neuroradiology, the ENRS, and the Foundation of the Association of University
Radiologists in Quebec. She had “ve wonderful mentors in her career—Professors
Giovanni Ruggiero, Giuseppe Scotti, Romero Ethier, Denis Melancon, and Karel
Terbrugge—who were a true source of inspiration.” She could not have accomplished her work without the support and love of her two precious children, Kahile
and Paul Jr., and her husband Allen.

Wendy R.K. Smoker, MD, 1998
Wendy Smoker (Fig.26.13) is a pioneer in head and neck imaging. During her tenure as Professor of Radiology at the University of Iowa, she greatly advanced our
ability to diagnose complex head and neck pathologies. She is a Past President of
the ASHNR and served with distinction as an AFIP faculty member. Displaying
unmatched acumen on the topics of denervation atrophy, granulomatosis with polyangiitis, cranial nerve anatomy and pathology, Horner Syndrome, and the craniocervical junction, Dr. Smoker co-authored over 100 publications and received over 80
scientic exhibit awards. As a dedicated mentor and teacher, her vibrant enthusiasm
has launched the careers of several prominent neuroradiologists who will continue
to carry her rich legacy of leadership and engagement across generations. She is
also known to “sing a mean Carmen.”

Vijay M.Rao, MD, 2004
Vijay Rao (Fig. 26.14) is the David C. Levin Professor and System Chief of
Enterprise Radiology and Imaging at Jefferson Health in Philadelphia. She served
as Chair of the Radiology Department at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of
Thomas Jefferson University from 2002 to 2022. She is a leading expert in head and
neck imaging, health services research in radiology and leadership. She edited the
MRI and CT Atlas of Correlative Imaging in Otolaryngology, a treasured resource
for trainees. Dr. Rao has held many leadership roles in national organizations,
including President of the RSNA, ASHNR, APDR, and AAWR.She is the current
RSNA R&E Foundation Board Chair and holds honorary memberships in numerous international societies. Dr. Rao has mentored many residents and fellows who
have subsequently become leaders in neuroradiology. She has received numerous
awards, including the APDR Achievement Award, the RSNA, AUR, Asian Oceanian
Society, and ASHNR Gold Medals, the AAWR Marie Curie Award, and the Jefferson
Dean’s Lifetime Distinguished Service Award.

Michelle Michel, MD, 2013–2014
Michelle Michel (Fig.26.15) is a Professor of Radiology and Otolaryngology at the
Medical College of Wisconsin. She is a Past President and Gold Medal recipient of
the ASHNR.Dr. Michel has also served in leadership roles in the RSNA, ARRS,
and ASNR.She co-authored over 100 original articles and book chapters, focused
on numerous head and neck topics, and has lectured all over the world, including
serving as an RSNA International Visiting Professor in Estonia. She co-edited a
number of Amirsys/Elsevier products, including textbooks, StatDx, and RadPrimer.
Dr. Michel has been honored with teaching and research awards, including Teacher
of the Year at both Vanderbilt University and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Deborah R.Shatzkes, MD, 2018–2019
Deborah Shatzkes (Fig.26.16) is a Past President and Gold Medal recipient of the
ASHNR.As President, she established an agreement between ASHNR and ESHNR
that has dramatically increased collaboration between US and European Head and
Neck radiologists. She also served as Chair of the RSNA Head and Neck Refresher
Course Committee, as an Associate Editor of Radiology, and as Treasurer of the
WFNRS.She is most proud of being an exceptional educator who was invited to
join the faculty at the ACR Institute of Radiologic Pathology and who has given
over 300 national and international lectures, including serving as a Keynote speaker
for the Baltic Congress of Radiology in 2022. She served as Chief, Head, and Neck
Radiology at Lenox Hill Hospital, as Director of Head and Neck Imaging at the
NewYork Head and Neck Institute, and as a Professor of Radiology at the Zucker
School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
