Guidelines for Clinical Practice in Radiology (Malaysia) First and Second Edition. Under her tutelage, there are now several outstanding neuroradiologists in Malaysia who are now taking leadership roles. Mention two would be Dr Norzaini Rose, who is now Senior Consultant Neuroradiologist and Head of the Department of Radiology at National Cancer Institute Putrajaya, and Prof Kartini Rahmat, who is Head of the Department of Biomedical Imaging, Universiti Malaya.
In summary, Prof. Dr Norlisah Mohd Ramli’s academic background, extensive research contributions, and leadership in radiology underscore her signicant impact on the eld. Her work continues to advance our understanding of neuroim­aging and its applications, while her diverse interests and roles highlight her dedica­tion to her profession and personal growth.
Dr Norzaini Rose Binti Mohd Zain
Dr Norzaini Rose is a Neuroradiologist who graduated with her MBBS degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, in 1995. She subsequently com­pleted her Master’s in Radiology from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in
2003. She became a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR, UK) in
2011. She then did her Neuroradiology Fellowship under the Subspecialty Program of the Ministry of Health Malaysia from 2007 to 2009, followed by fellowships at the Royal Melbourne Hospital from 2008 to 2009 and at the Brain Research Institute, Melbourne, Australia, in 2009.
Professional Roles andAchievements
Dr Norzaini Rose is currently a Senior Consultant Neuroradiologist and Head of Department, Radiology, at the National Cancer Institute Putrajaya. She is also the National Head of Radiology Specialties for the Ministry of Health Malaysia. Her leadership extends to coordinating the Neuroradiology Fellowship Program under the Ministry of Health, a program she pioneered. She chairs several committees and is an active participant in multiple local and regional radiological committees.
Dr Norzaini Rose is an Ordinary Member of the Academy of Medicine Malaysia, a Co-opted Council Committee member (National Head of Specialty for Radiology) at the College of Radiology Malaysia, a UK Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists, and a Registered Specialist on the National Specialist Registry. She also holds membership in the European Society of Radiologists.
In addition to her clinical and leadership roles, Dr Norzaini Rose has contributed to journal publications and clinical management guidelines, including the Malaysian Consensus and Standard Operating Procedures for Neurosciences and Radiology Services. Among the notable ones are Clinical Practice Guidelines in the Management of Multiple Sclerosis and Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma in 2015, Malaysian Consensus Statement on Brain Death 2023, and Handbook on Young Onset Dementia in 2014 and 2018. She is a frequent presenter at local and interna­tional conferences and received multiple Excellent Service Awards in 2007, 2015,

and 2018. As the National Head of Specialty for Clinical Radiology since 2022, her leadership involves overseeing the Radiology services in 149 public hospitals in Malaysia and developing standards and policies that overarches into the realm of Radiology practice for the entire country.
Her research interests include neuroinammatory diseases, demyelinating disor­ders, and neurodegenerative diseases. She has various publications, including stud­ies on multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica, and comparative studies on tumefactive demyelinating lesions and CNS neoplasms.
Dr Norzaini Rose is a dedicated and accomplished neuroradiologist who has made signicant contributions to the eld. Her expertise, leadership, and research have positively impacted Malaysia’s healthcare system and patient care.
Professor Dr Kartini Rahmat
Professor Dr Kartini Binti Rahmat is a Consultant Radiologist and distinguished professor in the Department of Biomedical Imaging at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya (UM). She holds an MBBS from UM and a Master of Radiology (UM) and is a Fellowship member of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR). She completed subspecialty training in Breast Imaging at the Royal Perth Hospital, Australia (2008). She furthered into diagnostic Neuroradiology fellowship training at the Universiti Malaya Medical Center under the preceptorship of Professor Dr Norlisah Ramli (2010–2012), followed by an Advanced Neuroimaging Fellowship at the Queensquare Hospital London (UK) under the European Society of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (ESMRMB) MRI observership program (2016). Her expertise spans medical diagnostic imaging, focusing on cancer imaging and diagnostic neu­roradiology, including advanced modalities such as MRI, mammography, ultra­sound, CT scans, and stereotactic-guided breast biopsy.
Professional Roles Professor Kartini has held various administrative positions at UM.She is currently the Head of the Department of Biomedical Imaging and has led the Universiti Malaya Research Imaging Center from January 2018–2024. She has served in several leadership positions, including Chairman of the Scientic Committee and Coordinator of postgraduate programs. She is an Ordinary Member of the Academy of Medicine Malaysia and a Council Committee member at the College of Radiology Malaysia; she has contributed to National clinical guidelines in radiology and coordinated major congresses such as the Asian Association of Radiology and Asian Oceanian Congress of Radiology 2021 (AOCR).
Achievements
Professor Kartini is a prominent gure in radiology, with numerous
awards to her name. She was a multiple award recipient at the Malaysian Congress of Radiology (MCOR) in 2022 and has been recognized for her research in Automated breast ultrasound and liver brosis. Her scientic contributions extend internation­ally, earning awards at prominent conferences such as the ASEAN Oceanian Congress of Radiology and the College of Radiology Annual Scientic Meetings. Additionally, she holds certications in clinical MRI teaching from the European Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology. She has been consistently recognized with Excellent Service Awards by UM for her academic and clinical contributions.

Professor Kartini has extensive work and numerous publications, many of which have been featured in WoS-indexed journals. She has published over 120 peer­reviewed articles, with over 2500 citations, an H index of 29 [Google Scholar] and a PubMed H index of 21. Professor Kartini’s research in neuroimaging is particu­larly notable. She has signicantly contributed to understanding microstructural changes in neurodegenerative diseases and other neurological conditions. Her stud­ies include investigating persistent postural-perceptual dizziness and examining alterations in the delicate network responsible for maintaining balance. Additionally, she has explored the microstructural integrity of peripheral nerves in Charcot­Marie- Tooth disease, highlighting abnormalities in nerve structures through MRI evaluation.
In neuroimaging for epilepsy, Professor Kartini has delved into current practices and evolving trends, offering insights into MRI imaging techniques for managing refractory epilepsy. Her work also extends to CNS tuberculous and brain tumor research, where vascular and contrasted perfusion-weighted MRI imaging provided crucial ndings for assessing brain vascularity, contributing valuable data on brain changes in these conditions. Prof. Kartini’s research on pediatric neuroimaging is equally impressive, with studies on white matter maturation in children with devel­opmental delays using diffusion tensor imaging.
Apart from neuroimaging, the range of diagnostic imaging in Professor Kartini’s research portfolio is vast. The area of her research entails studies on the diagnosis and detection of breast cancer, including the evaluation of advanced breast MRI techniques, mammographic density, automated breast ultrasound, and the applica­tions of machine learning Articial Intelligence. Her research also covers novel imaging techniques, such as fusion imaging for detecting axillary lymph node metastasis and exploring the role of single necleotide polymorphism (SNPs) in mammographic density. Professor Kartini’s diverse contributions underscore her expertise and impact across multiple medical imaging domains.
Professor Kartini’s expertise, leadership, and research have profoundly impacted the biomedical imaging eld. Her contributions have advanced our understanding of various diseases and improved patient care. She is a role model for aspiring radiolo­gists and a valuable asset to the medical community.

This could involve exploring the applications of articial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced imaging techniques to improve diagnosis, treatment planning, and

Their work high­lights the exceptional impact of female neuroradiologists and inspires future generations.

There are no female neuroradiologists from Nepal; however, there are few general radiologists who have shown excellence in this sector.
Dr Benu Wagle Lohani
One of the inuential female radiologists is Professor Benu Wagle Lohani. She completed her MBBS from Chennai University, India in the year 1992 and Post­Graduation in Radiodiagnosis and Imaging from PGIMER, Chandigarh, India in
1998. She joined the Department of Radiology & Imaging of TU Teaching Hospital, IOM from March 1998.
She was the former Head of the Department of Radiology & Imaging at Institute of Medicine, TU Teaching Hospital & also the PG coordinator of MDRD of the institute. She has been actively involved in the academics, research, and services of the department. She practices Diagnostic Radiology with special interest in Women’s Imaging.
She was also the coordinator for curriculum development of radiology specialty for National Board of Medical Specialties (NBMS) at Medical Education Commission (MEC) under the Government of Nepal which has started from the year 2021. She was also former General Secretory of Nepal Radiologists’ Association (NRA) and organized the rst international conference of Radiology (SACOR 2008) in Nepal, has presented a number of papers in national and

international conferences, authored and coauthored scientic publications in national and international journals. She is also a resource person, chairperson, & panelist for conferences and CMEs, peer reviewer for journals. She is a member of Ethical Review Board of Nepal Health Research Council.
Dr Akriti Baral
Dr Akriti Baral completed her MBBS at Kathmandu Medical College, Nepal, grad­uating in 2013. She is currently pursuing her residency in Radiology at the same institution, with a focus on expanding her expertise in this dynamic eld. In a coun­try where the number of female neuroradiologists is limited, Dr Baral has developed a strong passion for both Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology. Her ambi­tion is not only to contribute to these specialized elds but also to inspire more women to take up roles in these underrepresented areas of medicine. Additionally, she is actively involved in research, currently conducting a study titled “Rotterdam CT Severity Index in Predicting Early Outcomes in Traumatic Brain Injury.” Her work aims to enhance the understanding of traumatic brain injury prognosis, ulti­mately improving patient outcomes in a critical area of medical care.

Today, the practice of neuroradiology in public and private institutions on our little red dot is supported in no small part by women who trained locally and/or elsewhere around the world in diagnostic imaging of the brain, head and neck, and spine and neurointerventional radiology. Women neuroradiologists in Singapore have excelled professionally in the eld, with many leading in both the clinic and academia. This Chapter celebrates the contributions of women in neuroradiology in Singapore, exemplied by the following individuals in alphabetical order.
Dr Chan Ling Ling, a Professor at the Radiological Sciences and Neuroscience Academic Clinical Programs in Duke-NUS Medical School, is the Academic Vice Chair, Research, Radiological Sciences at the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Center; Vice-Chair, Research Training Review Panel, Ministry of Health, Singapore; Research Director, Division of Radiological Sciences and in the Research Executive Committee, Research Ofce, Singapore General Hospital (SGH) (Fig.23.38). She is also an Examiner at the Joint MMed (Diagnostic Radiology)— Final FRCR Part B examinations, President of Neuroradiology Subsection, Singapore Radiological Society and was Program Chair of the highly successful 2023 AOCNR-SGCR meeting. She currently leads a SingHealth team evaluating the impact of ultra-high eld MRI ownership for research and the clinic.
Dr Chan started radiology training in the SGH after medical school at the National University of Singapore. The mystery of radiological diagnosis intrigued her, and the immense impact Radiology has on patient care drew her in. After FRCR

specialist accreditation, she completed an almost 2-year clinical neuroradiology fel­lowship stint at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Hospital in the Houston Texas Medical Center. This exposed her to state-of-the-art management of brain and head & neck tumors, neurovascular inter­vention and clinical research. Helming Neurology, Neurosurgery, brain tumor, Neuro-ophthalmology, and Oculoplastic X-Ray rounds for nearly 2-decades as SGH faculty further honed her clinical acumen and helped her build strong rapport with clinicians. She collaborates with MR radiography and physicist teams to trans­late advanced MRI techniques into service to solve clinical problems. She credits mentors and seniors such as Drs Tan Kim Ping, Wilfred Peh, John Hoe, Vincent Chong, Tan Bien Soo, Winston Lim, Lo Yew Long, Tchoyoson Lim, Tan Eng King, Thng Choon Hua, Andrew Tan, Louis Tan, Tay Kiang Hiong, Chan Lai Peng, Larry Ginsberg, Don Schomer, and Normal Leeds for their inspiration and support, and many opportunities they have availed her to grow professionally in the eld.
Dr Chan is a three-time national Clinician Scientist awardee, leading a neuroim­aging research program focusing on chronic neurological diseases such as Parkinsonism, gait disorders, traumatic brain injury, aging, and dementia. She has local, international, university, and industry collaborations with centers from Korea, Taiwan, Europe, and USA.Her partnerships have widened the repertoire of advanced MRI and AI tools that her team evaluates and uses to track structural and functional changes in disease and aid in the neuroradiological workow for diagnosis and prediction of neuropathology. She has 200 peer-reviewed publications, 4940

citations, and an i10-index of 116. As academic faculty of the three Singapore medi­cal schools, Dr Chan has mentored many students in research, presented or co­authored >260 abstracts at local, regional, and international conferences, and received numerous national and international scientic awards and accolades as PI or mentor. She is an invited speaker at numerous international conferences, includ­ing the RSNA and ISMRM.
Dr Chan is free spirited and enjoys diversity, swimming, cycling, pushing her limits, and connecting with nature in hiking, imbibing festivities and also checking out the less trodden paths in her travels.
Dr Fan Yoke Fun was a pioneer female neuroradiologist from Singapore. She graduated from the Medical School in the National University of Singapore in 1979 and was among the few from her graduating class to choose to specialize in Diagnostic Radiology. Plain lm interpretation was what attracted Dr Fan to Radiology. She underwent training in Diagnostic Radiology locally, and for a year in Guy’s Hospital under Drs Hugh Saxton, Sheila Rankin, and John Reidy as part of the training program then. She enjoyed her time in London very much. She was conferred her specialist FRCR certication in Diagnostic Radiology by the Royal College of Radiologists, United Kingdom, in 1984. Thereafter, she joined the Singapore General Hospital, the largest public and teaching hospital in Singapore, as faculty. Among the largely male dominated faculty in Singapore General Hospital, Dr Fan was well known for her attention to detail and good and quick pair of hands. She was the go-to guru for difcult procedures such as lymphangiography. She was interested in patterns and “things” that did not conform to the usual or stereotype. To understand and differentiate what was abnormal from the range of normal and attendant variations, she painstakingly collected many radiological cases for teach­ing. She put her case collection and sharp eyes to good use in tutorials and was a favorite sought-after tutor among radiology trainees. Singapore General Hospital was also the rst to spearhead and lead in subspecialty radiology practice in Singapore.
Even though Dr Fan was an unwilling head and neck radiologist to start off due to limited clinical indications in those early days, her love for and dedication to the unusual and non-stereotypical led her to amass many excellent illustrative imaging cases from clinical reporting. These were featured among her more than 40 pictorial essays published in peer reviewed journals where she described the many facets of local and perineural spread of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and complications to treatment, in partnership with Dr Vincent Chong, who had a air for academic writ­ing. This was a massive feat especially as access to publications and journals in Singapore was hard to come by at that time. In 2005, Dr Fan took the courage as a senior female steward neuroradiologist to join Dr James Khoo at the Diagnostic Imaging Department in the Singapore National Cancer Center to help attend to the heavy service load of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and other head and neck cancers seen in the then “young” institution. At the current time, Dr Fan is happily retired, and enjoying life travelling with her better half.
Dr Kheok Si Wei is a Neuroradiologist and Head and Neck Radiologist at Singapore General Hospital. After graduating with a medical degree from the

National University of Singapore, she did her Radiology residency in SingHealth, Singapore. Upon joining the hospital as a certied radiologist, she had the opportu­nity to take up short visiting fellowships at University Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany and Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, USA.Under the Singapore Ministry of Health Manpower Development Plan, she furthered her specialist train­ing in Head and Neck Imaging at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Inrmary, USA.
She returned to Singapore at the peak of the Covid pandemic, where apart from reporting unusual presentations of the disease, she helped to re-organize the medical student radiology elective program in the division to adapt to the new requirements. In 2023, the Neuroradiology section became a newly formed department and at the time of writing she serves as Director of Head and Neck Radiology, Director of MRI patient care services, and Deputy Head of Department for Neuroradiology at Singapore General Hospital.
She holds academic appointments at all three medical schools in Singapore and shares her knowledge as an invited conference speaker, as well as through teaching residents and medical students. She is committed to the development of an excellent head and neck radiology unit with the collective efforts of the team. In addition, she oversees the MRI service in the division, which is one of the busiest in the nation, together with a group of dedicated and highly skilled radiographers.
Her current research interests are in multidisciplinary collaborations to develop deep learning models in enhancing patient care, to explore the potential of imaging science in uncovering previously undetected diseases, and to predict difcult head and neck surgeries.
Rain or shine, what motivates her to turn up to work is the meaningfulness she nds in serving a broader population in a government public hospital.
Dr Sumeet Kumar is a Senior Consultant Neuroradiologist at the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI), with over 11years of experience in advancing the eld of neuroradiology. She plays a vital role in academic medicine in Singapore, serving as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School and the Director of Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging Research within the Radiological Sciences Academic Clinical Program (RADSC ACP) at SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Center. Additionally, she holds the position of Research Head for the Neuroradiology Department at NNI.
Passionate about educating the next generation of radiologists, Dr Kumar teaches at the European Courses for Neuroradiology, organized by the European Society of Neuroradiology, and has been invited to speak at numerous prestigious local and international conferences, including the European Congress of Radiology, the European Society of Neuroradiology, and the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM). In 2016, Dr Kumar’s contributions to education were recognized with the Residency Education Award.
Dr Kumar’s research focuses on dementia and normal pressure hydrocephalus, with several peer-reviewed publications in these areas. A recipient of the RADScience ACP Pitch for Funds grant, she has conducted research on Diffusion Kurtosis Imaging in Alzheimer’s disease, a study that earned the SingHealth Publish! 2023 award. Dr Kumar began her medical career in Mumbai, India, and

went on to specialize in neuroradiology through fellowships in London, UK.After relocating to Singapore in 2009, she completed advanced specialist training and joined NNI in 2013. In 2015, Dr Kumar obtained the European Diploma in Neuroradiology and completed a fellowship at Leiden University, focusing on dementia and neuropsychiatric lupus research using 7T MRI technology.
Outside of professional achievements, Dr Kumar takes pride in a wide range of experiences that have shaped her emotional intelligence and cross-cultural commu­nication skills. These include teaching radiology in Kenya, hosting a children’s TV show, participating in theater and storytelling workshops, and exploring activities like skydiving and paragliding. Driven by a passion for learning, Dr Kumar con­stantly seeks new skills and challenges.
Dr Lishya Liauw studied Medicine at Leiden University in the Netherlands. For specialist training, she was considering Otolaryngology and as an intended prepara­tion she worked 1year in General Surgery as a junior doctor not in residency train­ing. The Netherlands does not implement the HO and MO system for junior doctors as in Singapore or the UK.Dutch junior doctors work within a residency training program or do similar work outside a residency training. During her year in General Surgery, she frequently consulted the radiologist for patients presenting with “acute abdomen”. She was fascinated by the use of Ultrasonography as a rst line diagnos­tic imaging method and wanted to be able to master Ultrasonography. Since no immediate positions were open for the Radiology residency training, she started off in a junior doctor position not in residency training in the Neuroradiology section of the Diagnostic Radiology department in Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). One year later, she started the ofcial residency training in LUMC.
For subspecialization within radiology, she considered Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology/Head Neck radiology and decided on the latter in view of more variety. In the early times that she trained and worked in radiology, there were not many female radiologists, the majority were men. But her batch of trainees started with increasing number of female trainees although the majority were male. She was unaware of the concept of mentorship but in retrospect she would have appreciated help to navigate life in radiology waters, she experienced that the old boys network did not include women. She tried research during her PhD training but decided it was not a perfect t. Since 2008, she works as a neuroradiologist in Singapore, currently in Singapore General Hospital. She always liked the idea of having an overseas experience and Singapore seemed a good t with the high qual­ity of healthcare and the English language spoken. Finally, she has moved more into Head and Neck Radiology, which is a challenging eld but so much more enjoyable with an improved understanding of the intricate anatomy. In both the Netherlands and Singapore, she has been engaged in administrative positions. She likes to facilitate, simplify and streamline processes. She brings the same strengths to her new role as the team Wellness Advocate. She prefers working in this environ­ment due to the stimulating effect of newbee trainees and need to keep updated in her eld.

Dr Ai Peng Tan is a senior consultant at the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, National University Hospital, Singapore, and a clinician-scientist funded by the National Medical Research Council. Dr Tan also has a joint appointment at the A*STAR Institute for Human Development and Potential (A*STAR IHDP) as a Principal Investigator, where she assumes leadership of the Neuroimaging Domain and spearheads neuroimaging research pertaining to GUSTO, the biggest birth cohort study in Singapore. In 2016, Dr Tan was honored with the Academic Medicine Development Award and completed a prestigious Pediatric Neuroradiology Fellowship at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, NHS Foundation Trust, which included a pivotal research attachment at the Center for the Developing Brain, King’s College London. This experience laid the foundation for a distin­guished career in pediatric brain mapping research. Dr Tan possesses in-depth knowledge of various advanced neuroimaging techniques, including diffusion ten­sor imaging and functional MRI, that form the basis of human brain mapping. Her research focuses on clinical translation of MRI-based brain connectivity proling, particularly in neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders. She is currently recognized as the sole neuroradiologist in Singapore actively conducting research in the mapping of the developing human brain. This recognition is further highlighted by the recent award of the National Medical Research Council (NMRC) Transition Award for the research proposal “Precision BRAin COnnectivity Proling of Learning Difculties for future therapeutic strategy using network-targeted neuro­stimulation (BRACO-LD).” As the Research Director for the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at NUS and the Department of Diagnostic Imaging at NUH, Dr Tan oversees signicant research initiatives and contributes actively to the scien­tic community through membership on the NHG Domain Specic Review Board (DSRB). Dr Tan is also an established academic writer and speaker, having pre­sented at numerous local and international conferences and published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. Driven by a vision to embed MRI-based brain network pro­ling into clinical practice for children with neurodevelopmental and neuropsychi­atric disorders, Dr Tan is actively engaged in the development of brain- network targeted interventions to further advance this critical eld of research. Outside of the professional realm, Dr Tan is passionate about traveling. The combination of solo travel, great coffee, people watching, and music is her idea of a perfect vacation. This balance of exploration and relaxation provides a refreshing complement to a demanding career in neuroimaging research
Dr Judy Tan started her radiology training soon after graduating from medical school, National University of Singapore in 2000. She obtained her postgraduate qualications from the Royal College of Radiologists, UK and National University of Singapore in 2005. She embarked on her neuroradiology subspecialty training in Singapore General Hospital, which is the largest acute tertiary hospital in Singapore with nearly 1800 beds and over 50 clinical specialties. She chose Neuroradiology as she felt that imaging plays a very important role in this specialty, and often has a strong correlation with patients’ clinical signs and symptoms.
