Небоскреб " Shard", строительство которого на южном берегу Темзы близится к завершению, является почти идеальным метафорическим олицетворением того, как меняется наша столица – меняется в худшую сторону. Небоскреб показывает, как Лондон становится все более неравноправным и опасно зависимым от шальных денег. Это высотное здание неподалеку от Лондонского моста навязали столице вопреки протестам ее жителей, организаций по охране памятников, и предостережениям ЮНЕСКО о том, что небоскреб может скомпрометировать Тауэр, получивший статус памятника всемирного наследия. Более того, у его владельцев и обитателей будет очень мало общего с этим историческим районом, который, несмотря на свое расположение в самом центре столицы, опережает все остальные районы Лондона по показателям бедности и безработицы. Здание на 95% принадлежит правительству Катара, а его создатель Ирвин Селлар (Irvine Sellar) называет свое детище «виртуальным городом», включающим пятизвездный отель и рестораны самого высокого уровня.
