7.7. Conversion & sound interchange

Sound-interchange in English is often combined with a difference in the paradigm → the question of the relationship between sound interchange & conversion. A. Smirnitsky: 3 types of relations:

1) breath – to breathe. Sound-interchange distinguishes only between Ws, it does not differentiate W-forms of 1 & the same W. It has no relation to the paradigms of the Ws → cannot be regarded as conversion;

2) song – to sing. The vowel in song interchanges with 3 different vowels, the latter interchanging with 1 another in the forms of the V to sing. A song – to sing are not related by conversion: song differs from to sing (sang, sung) not only in the paradigm. Its root-vowel does not occur in the W-forms of the V & vice versa.

3) house – to house. This type of sound-interchange distinguishing the 2 Ws (V & N) is the same as that which distinguishes the W-forms of the N: house [haus] – houses [hauziz]; to house [hauz] – houses [hauziz]. The only difference between the 2 Ws lies in their paradigms → W-pairs like houseto house are cases of conversion.

In presentto present, accentto accent, which differ in the position of stress, the latter does not distinguish the W-forms within the paradigm of the 2 Ws. The difference in stress is similar to the function of sound-interchange in breath – to breathe → do not belong to conversion.
