Why 37 – Gentle Exercise (What 48) Exercise wears out the living matter.

1863 Vol. Page 178.1 – “Living machines, as well as inanimate ones, wear by use. With the birth of power there is death of living mater. Every contraction of a muscle, every transit of nervous influence, is accompanied by the passage of living atoms of muscle and nerve into a condition of death. Every action of the mind upon the nervous system disintegrates or breaks down a portion of the nervous matter, just as every train sent over the railroad wears away some portion of the iron track.”

Page 150.1 – “Is walking worthy to constitute the most important part of the students exercise? - Yes.”

1863 Vol. 6 page107.1 – “riding for five to ten miles in a carriage daily.”

Comment - This is in contrast with Ellen White who points out that riding is not adequate.
