Appendix 4 - The Laws of Health

William A Alcott

We need a good oxygen supply to the skin.

Page-298-1556 – “If a lighted lamp or candle is plunged suddenly into air which has remained for some hours in contact with the human body, unchanged, as in an ordinary feather-bed when covered with thick comfortables, it is immediately extinguished, for want of oxygen to sustain the combustion. .... where combustion cannot go on, the skin can never perform its offices.”

What 51 – Cool House

We should not heat houses over 62 or 65 F. degrees.

Page 305-1592 – “If we live in a temperature of 70 degrees in the forenoon, when 62 degrees might have sufficed, still we must have at least 70 degrees the rest of the day, or we shall be chilly.” Page 340-1779 – “Children, thus encased (warm clothes, heated rooms, feather beds) and thus fed

(constantly nibbling at high-seasoned and very rich foods) who attend school, will never be satisfied with 62 degrees or 65 degrees.”

Comment – Just because we can adjust to 62 F. degrees does not mean that it is unhealthy to heat the air to 70 F. degrees.
