Appendix 5 - Philosophy of Health

Larkin B Coles

Why 92 - Physical or Mental Activity 2 (What 51)

If you exercise mentally or physically after eating you will age faster.

Page 46.1 – “To attempt hard work or study, within one hour after eating, will induce …. Derangement in the functions of the digestive organs; the food will not digest so well, and the system will not be as well nourished …. Hence the whole system is impaired, its vigor and durability are diminished, and the life is shortened.”

Page 50.1 – “The man who disregards this law will grow old faster – other things being equal – than the man who allows time for the thorough digestion of his food.”

Score – Unverified

Why 93 - Mental activity after Meals 3 (What 51) Mental activity after eating causes headaches.

Page 50.2 – “nervous energies are drawn, in a measure, away from the direction of the stomach to the brain. This unnatural action frequently causes an increase quantity of blood to be lodged on the organ, occasioning as dull, heavy headache.”

Comment – Physical exercise does shunt blood to the muscles and slows digestion, but mental activity does not slow digestion to any great extent. Slowing digestion at the upper intestinal level has no health risks.

What 53 – Rest before Meals

R 28

After mental activity there should be a short rest before meals.

Page 43.2 – (Students should have) “a few minutes' relaxation before eating”

Page 105.2 – “a short space should be granted for relaxation from any active employment of the nervous system, immediately preceding a meal”

Score - Unverified

Why 94 – Rest before Meals (What 53)

Rest is required for the nerves to gain equilibrium.

Page 43.2 – (The rest is so) “that the nerves may regain their equilibrium.”

Page 105.2 – “If the recitations immediately succeed a meal, the process of digestion is interrupted.”

Score - Unverified

What 54 – Sugar

(W 49) (R 13) (A 128) (J 65) (K 80)

Sugar is good food.

Page 60.1 - "But sugar is a good article of diet, when used in conjunction with articles containing less nutrition in the same quantity."

Score - Unverified

What 55 - Mixing Foods W 29 G 71 A 130 (J 52)

We should eat similar food types at any one time.

Page 59.1 – “It is better that there should be considerable sameness in each individual meal.”

Why 95 – Spices (What 56) Spices stimulate the stomach.

Page 35.2 – “The condiments …. do not assist in …. Digestion; except by over-stimulating the stomach, which stimulating process always tends to weaken that organ.”

Score – Unverified

What 57 – Watching our Diet

We should not watch what we eat.

Page 63.1 – “It is a misfortune for any one, especially for one whose health has become deranged, to keep his mind continually dwelling on the questions, what he shall eat, how much, &c., because continual mental anxiety tends to embarrass the free action of the digestive function.”

Score – Unverified

Why 96 – Watching our Diet (What 57) Watching what we eat will interfere with digestion.

Page 63.1 – “because continual mental anxiety (about how much and what we eat) tends to embarrass the free action of the digestive function.”

Score – Unverified

What 58 - Over Eating

(W 46) (R 9) (G 89) (A 140) (J 57) (K 67)

It is not important how much we eat.

Page 62.1 – “The quantity of food which it is necessary to take each meal is not a matter of so much importance as the regularity and simplicity of diet.”

Score – Unverified

Why 97 – Over Eating (What 58)

If we eat good food and exercise we tend to eat the correct amount.

Page 62.1 – “Whoever will govern himself by dietetic law – eat plain food – only three times a day

– give time for food to digest – take proper exercise – will find little difficulty in settling the question, how much he ought to eat.”

Page 62.2 – “a perfectly healthy stomach will furnish the best index to the quantity demanded.” Comment – With no eating between meals and having adequate exercise does allow the appetite centre to control intake, however people should still watch their intake.

Score – Verified

What 59 – Over eating with Exercise

If we exercise we should eat less.

Page 115.1 - “Laboring men should eat temperately. …. They should eat moderately, and not over load their stomachs. …. Three meals a day is as much as they can lawfully dispose of;”

What 61 – Hot Drinks

W 54 R 36 G 76 A 148 J 80 K 74

Hot drinks are a health hazard.

Page 86.2 – “Hot drinks of any kind are objectionable. They excite by the force of the heat, and then debilitate the stomach. They should only be taken about blood-warmth.”

Score – Unverified

Why 99 – Hot Drinks (What 61) Hot drinks open the pores of the skin.

Page 86.2 – “They (hot drinks) excite the pores of the skin, and expose the system to take cold by sudden changes.”

Score - Unverified

Why 100 – Fluid with Meals (What 62)

Drinking with food injures digestion.

Score – Unverified

What 63 – Hard to Digest

K 72

You should not eat any food that is hard to digest.

Page 99.1 – “Students should avoid those things which are had to digest.”

Comment – High fat foods should be avoided, but high fibre foods, such as legumes, and fibrous vegetables, which are also hard to digest, are not to be avoided.

Drink little water.

Page 87.1 – “Large quantities of any kind of drinks should be avoided.”

Page 87.1 – “Beside, in hot weather, many are seriously injured, and even destroyed sometimes, by too large quantities of cold water. If they want to drink often, they must confine themselves to very small quantities at a time.”

Score - Unverified

Why 101 – Amount of Drink 1 (What 64) It is habit that causes us to drink.

Page 87.1 – “Large quantities of any kind of drinks should be avoided. …. Much depends upon habit; if we accustom ourselves in custom of drinking much, we shall want much; and if we accustom ourselves to drink but little, we shall want but little.”

Why 102 - Amount of Drink 2 (What 64) Fluid dilutes our gastric juices.

Page 87.1 – “it also dilutes the gastric juices, and therefore weakens that fluid.” Comment – Fluid is rapidly absorbed from the stomach.

Score – Unverified

Why 103 – Amount of Drink 3 (What 64) Drinking a lot of water weakens the stomach.

Why 104 – Personal Cleanliness 1 (What 65) Washing keeps the pores of the skin open.

Page 19.2- “Miasmic influences take advantage of the fact that the skin holds, in a great degree, the destiny of the body. The action of the skin be retarded by having its pores and capillaries obstructed, there will at once be disturbance throughout the whole system.”

Page 119.1 – “The pores of the skin are likely to become choked and impervious, without it (bathing). The surface of the body becomes covered with a substance which prevents the action of the cutaneous vessels.”

Score - Unverified

Why 105 – Personal Cleanliness 2 (What 65)

Washing helps purify the blood and keep the organs healthy.

Page 119.1 – “The natural exhalations, which are adapted to purify the blood and fluids generally, are thrown back upon the system; some, or all of the internal organs become oppressed and cease their healthy functions.”

Page 21.1 – “There is great sympathy between the skin and the internal organs. When the functions of the skin are deranged, there is disturbance in the action of the kidneys, .....Liver, .... lungs, .... the whole system feels,-when the skin suffers.”

Score – Unverified

Why 106 – Personal Cleanliness 3 (What 65) Fevers are caused by blocked pores of the skin.

Page 119.2 – “An obstructed skin is frequently produced by a sudden cold, which the internal system becomes oppressed, and a fever ensues, unless the obstruction be speedily removed.”
