What 42 – Hunger C 47

Hunger is not a good judge of our needs of food.

Page 308-757 – “The hunger of a depraved stomach, then, is in no respect a true indication of the real wants of the stomach.”

Comment – If one habitually overeats, the desire for food will also increase, but in the context of living close to starvation as advocated by Graham (What 90) this is an incorrect statement. Also in the presence of adequate exercise hunger is a reliable index of the needs.

Why 29 – Unreliability of Hunger (What 42)

It is because of the depraved state of our stomachs that hunger is not able to judge requirements. Page 308-757 – “But in a depraved state of the stomach, the integrity of this special sense is wholly destroyed, and the feeling which we call hunger is no certain evidence that the vital economy really requires that a fresh supply of food should be furnished to the stomach..”

Comment – It is not the stomach that resets the desire for food, but the brain.

Why 30 – Organic Sense of the Stomach (What 42)

The stomach can accurately tell if the correct food is introduced, but this sense is usually lost.

Page 295-727 – “its (stomach) organic sensibility enables it to detect and appreciate with the utmost accuracy, both the quality of the stimulus, and the degree of stimulation; and consequently enables it to discriminate, with the same accuracy, between those substances which are best adapted to the vital interests of the system, and those which are pernicious or offensive, or even less adapted to the vital wants.”

Page 300-739 – “If dog be fed on superfine wheat-flour bread and water, they will die in about seven weeks; but if they are fed on bread made of whole natural substance of the wheat, or unbolted wheat-meal bread and water, they will live and do well.”

Comment – Lack of fibre causes no immediate health problems except constipation. In the long term, however, lack of fibre is a health risk.

Why 32 – Concentrated Foods (What 43)

Lack of fibre causes debility, constipation, irritable bowel, and affects the teeth, gums, taste, salivary glands, stomach, and intestines.

Page 304-748 – “Debility, sluggishness, constipation, obstruction, and morbid irritability of the alimentary canal, have been among the principal roots of both chronic and acute disease in civic life in all parts of the world, and in all periods of time; and concentrated forms of food, compound preparations, irritating stimuli, and excess in quantity, have been among the principal cause of these difficulties.”
