Погруженная в невеселые мысли, Николь сидела в баре Фонтени. Как ни пыталась, она не могла подавить ощущение недовольства своей жизнью. Она утешала себя тем, что у нее есть все для счастья: великолепный дом, образцовый муж и двое детей, которые не причиняли ей особых хлопот. Кроме того, ей не приходилось все время сидеть в четырех стенах только в обществе детей. Мать Николь нередко выручала ее, соглашаясь посидеть с малышами. Они могли позволить себе нанять и няню, но Николь не хотела лишать детей защищенности, которую может дать лишь материнская забота.
Брендан не возражал, если жена позволяла себе поход по магазинам или в салон красоты. Напротив, он сам поддерживал в ней стремление быть красивой. Николь знала, что муж гордится ею, и подозревала, что он привозил домой своих партнеров не столько для того, чтобы показать им дом, сколько похвастаться женой.
