1) Find in the text of the article and translate the following expressions:

  1. Children are to be seen and not heard, to do away with smth, to pull the place apart, spanking is out of the question, to inflict psychological wounds, extreme permissiveness, to undermine parents’ authority, unsolicited advice, to take complete control, adolescent rebellion, parental laxity, to roam the street, to say no to children, to exert one’s authority, to set boundaries, old-fashioned parenting, to strike a chord with smb, to learn values, to hold smb responsible for smb’s shortcomings, to give in to children’s demands, to be in charge, to draw the line beyond which they are not permitted to go, to know better/ best.

2) Discuss the following points, using your active vocabulary and the expressions listed above.

1. What is the main line of argument in the article? Can you formulate the author’s stance?

2. Group all the arguments against parental laxity presented in the article. Which of them do you share? State your own opinion concerning the problem of parents’ permissiveness.

9. Discussion

1) Why were Ted and Caroline late home for Christmas? Did they find plausible excuses? Did the parents believe them?

2) Why did the brother and sister dislike their presents? How did their parents take their attitude?

3) Why didn’t Ted and Caroline take the trouble to think of presents for their parents? Did they feel uneasy about that?

4) Why did they give their parents theatre tickets? Was it a sign of consideration?

5) What did Tom and Grace find on their coming home after the theatre? Do you think they were going to tell their children off afterwards? How does this episode characterize both the parents and the children?

6) Why does the author use the words “kids” and “children” in inverted commas? Did Tom and Grace realize that their offspring were grown up enough?

7) Explain why the Carters indulged their children? Weren’t they too permissive? Do you think it was wise of them?

8) Whom will you hold responsible for the young Carters’ being so selfish and inconsiderate?

9) Do you expect Ted and Caroline to change their attitude to their parents in due course? Give your reasons.

10) Speak on the consequences of “blind” parental love as it is shown in the story.

11) Compare the Jordachs and the Carters. Try to analyze the reasons for the conflict in both families. Which do you think has a more harmful effect on the children: the father’s domineering character leading to the children’s slavish obedience and hypocrisy or the parents’ excessive permissiveness and laxity causing the children’s disrespect and out-of-hand behaviour?

12) Comment on the proverb: As you sow so you shall reap. Does the proverb reflect the situation in the Jordach and Carter families?

13) Interpret the expression generation gap. Why is it so difficult to understand each other for people belonging to different generations? Do you think the problem is inevitable in any family?
