11. Comment on the stretches of text below and bring out their implicit meaning. Pay special attention to the words and phrases with a symbolic meaning.

1) Vanderhoff Street ran parallel to Broadway and seemed to be trying to emulate it, but doing it badly, like a poor man in a baggy suit and scuffed shoes pretending he had arrived in a Cadillac.

2) Vanderhoff was a long street and as he approached his own house the street became shabbier and shabbier, as though just the mere act of going south was somehow spiritually a decline.

3) She was the only one in the family who called supper dinner.

4) He would have liked that. Sir Rudolph Jordache, Colonel in the Port Philip Household Guards.

5) Rudolph felt uneasy about eating black market lamb on the same day that Henry Fuller had found out his brother had been killed, but … he couldn’t talk to his father about fine points like that.

6) He wolfed down his food. … His mother just picked at her food. His father … ate enormously.

7) When she stood up, the father made his usual joke. “Be careful,” he said. “Don’t let those soldiers grab you. We don’t have enough rooms in this house to set up a nursery.”

12. Discussion

1) When and where is the scene set? What was the state of things in the country, as described in the text?

2) Describe the appearance and manners of the members of the family: the father (Axel), the mother, Rudolph, Gretchen, Thomas.

3) Describe the place where the family lived. What was Rudolph’s attitude to it?

4) In what connection does the author mention a certain period of time – 1930 or 1931. What kind of time was it?

5) What were Rudolph’s political outlooks? Why did Rudolph feel uneasy about eating lamb at dinner? How does this feeling characterize him?

6) Why did the conversation between Father and Gretchen pain Rudolph? Was Rudolph satisfied with the relationships in the family and their way of life? Prove your point of view.

7) What were Rudolph’s resolutions concerning his future life? How was he going to achieve his aim? What was he doing to make his dream come true?

8) Compare the two brothers. Would you say that they were poles apart? Which of them do you think would achieve more?

9) What is your impression of the Jordache family?

10) Revise the text The Thorn Birds (Unit 1) and compare the Cleary family with the Jordaches. Can you draw a parallel between the two families?

13. Read the text THE FAMILY UNIT (Reader) and do the following assignments.

b) Translate the sentences below using the expressions listed in a).

13) Улучшение возможностей карьерного роста и признание обществом контрацепции позволили женщинам откладывать рождение детей независимо от семейного положения. В результате получили распространение семьи без детей.

14) Упадок традиционной патриархальной семьи привел к разнообразию форм семейной жизни, например бабушки все чаще вынуждены компенсировать внукам недостаток материнской заботы, и так называемое «общественное воспитание» детей становится признанным фактом современности.

15) Если политики правого толка винят либеральные реформы и вседозволенность в нравственном разложении общества и упадке семьи, то их оппоненты указывают, что именно вопиющий индивидуализм и жажда потребления, поощрявшиеся правительством Тэтчер, подорвали нравственные устои, необходимые для сохранения семьи.
