SEVEN DEADLY HEALTH SINS

The Bible set down seven deadly sins: pride, lechery, envy, anger, covetousness, gluttony and sloth, which inflict mortal wounds to the soul. There are, however, seven “health sins”, or habits, which are in fact as deadly. Two of them – obesity and physical inactivity are known from ancient times. They are joined by the modern bad habits: smoking and drinking alcohol, and the danger of sleeping too much or too little, eating between meals and skipping breakfast.

Recent studies in Britain show that more than one in five 11-to-16-year-olds skip breakfast, more than 16% of girls also skip lunch. Many of those who don’t, eat only chips, pizza, crisps and cola for lunch. The children don’t get enough iron which is necessary for healthy muscles and for some reactions of the brain. The low iron levels can cause obesity, heart disease, and anaemia.

In combination, these poor health habits could double the chance of premature death or different diseases for those who survive. Of course, sleeping too much or too little, skipping meals or snacking between them are not as deadly as smoking, obesity and drinking, but they are indicative of dangerously chaotic lifestyles.

Regularity in life promotes your health. Seven or eight hours of sleep, an early breakfast, a healthy diet and regular meals make up a really good way to live.
