A gentleman sent home to his wife a parrot for a birthday present. On the same day his wife bought a chicken and said to the cook, "A bird is coming for tonight's dinner. Cook it." The parrot arrived first and he cooked it. Then the husband came for dinner. "What's this?" he asked as the cook served the parrot.

His wife had no other choice but to tell him all. "That's too bad," said the gentleman. "The bird could speak five languages!"

"Then, why didn't it say a word?" asked his wife.

THE BOY AND THE CAKES

A train arrived at a small station. A passenger looked out of the window and saw a woman who was selling cakes. The gentleman wanted to buy one, but the woman was standing very far from the carriage.

As the gentleman didn't want to go out he called a little boy whom he saw near by and asked him, "How much is a cake?" "Threepence, sir," answered the boy. Then the gentleman gave him sixpence and said. "Bring me a cake and with the other three pence buy one for yourself."

A few minutes later the boy was back. He was eating a cake. He gave the gentleman three pence change and said, "There was only one cake, sir."

A PIECE OF CHEESE

One day Mr. Wells came to see his friends Mr. and Mrs. Wilson. They were sitting at the table and having tea. There was milk and sugar, some ham and bread and butter on the table, but there was no cheese. The mistress of the house said, "I am sorry. I have no cheese in the house to-day" and gave Mr. Wells another cup of tea. "Oh. it's all right," answered Mr. Wells, though he liked cheese most of all.

Mrs. Wilson's little boy was also at the table. He didn't say a word, but got up from his chair and hurried out of the room.

A few minutes later he came back and gave the guest a small piece of cheese. Mr. Wells was about to put it into his mouth when he said, "That's a good boy! I see you have better eyes than your mother. Where have you found this piece of i cheese?" The boy answered with a smile, "In the mouse-trap".
