7C Словоупотребление — страноведение

1. Travel rep.: Rep сокращенная форма от representative [,repn'zent9tiv]

(= представитель, представительница), присущая разговорной речи. Jane is

a travel rep (= Джейн руководитель тургруппы, т.е. она работает в данном

случае для британского бюро путешествий).

2. It sounds a dream job: Интересным является отсутствие like, но оно тоже

может употребляться: it sounds like a dream job.

3. What do you do? (= Что вы делаете? Чем вы занимаетесь?): т.е. вопрос о

регулярно выполняемой работе, привычной (поэтому глагол употребляется в

Present Indefinite). Сравните: What are you doing (there)? Чем вы там сей-

час занимаетесь? См. 6В2.

4. А(п): Обратите внимание на следующие примеры с неопределенным арти-

клем: you're a travel rep (= Вы руководительница тургруппы [неопределен-

ный артикль при обозначении профессий]), I work seven hours a day (= я

работаю семь часов в день/ежедневно).

5. Forty: Four, fourteen, forty (без и!).

6. Aircraft: Особое образование множественного числа - aircraft имеет одина-

ковую форму в единственном и множественном числе: one aircraft is

enough, two aircraft are enough и т.д.

7. You = употребляется для выражения неопределенно-личного значения:

You've got to know the language in this kind of job, What kind of person do

you have to be if you want to become a rep?, You should be single.

8. "Быть должным": В дополнение к примерам, данным в 6С8, обратите внима-

ние на предложение в 7А: уои'ие got to know the language = язык нужно

____________знать. Запомните вопросительное предложение с have to (без "got"): what

kind of person do you have to be ... ? = каким человеком нужно быть?

9. The Canaries: Также the Canary Islands.

10. "Стать, становиться": Мы познакомились пока с двумя англо-русскими соот-

ветствиями: if it gets too cold in Majorca = если на Майорке станет слиш-

ком холодно; if you want to become a (travel) rep = если хочешь стать ги-

дом.

11. Get: Имеет много значений, как одно из самых употребительных английских

слов. Примеры: (6А) when I get back from the market = когда я вернусь с

рынка, (6А) I get a bit of sleep in the evening = я вечером немного посплю,

(6А) we want to get on = мы хотим преуспеть, (7А) if it gets too cold in Majorca

= если на Майорке станет слишком холодно.

A commuter's story

I work in the City of London. I don't live

there. Nobody lives in the City of London

except care-takers and night

watchmen. The City has a night population

of only 5,200 but a day population

of over 400,000. Four hundred

thousand commuters every working

day! Most of them don't come from

Central London but from the vast suburbs

in the north, south, east and west.

Some don't come from London at all

but from places further away - small

towns and country villages in Kent, for

example, or the "garden cities" to the

north of London.

The City sucks commuters in like a

giant vacuum cleaner every morning.

They come by British Rail and the Tube, by bus and on foot. Yes, on stand on London Bridge between eight and nine in the morning, you can of people all hurrying in one direction - north.

I come in on one of the countless commuter trains. If the train's on time, Cannon Street at 8.53. Often the trains don't run on time. I don't know Rail can't keep to their timetables. According to them, it's because the weather's

too cold - or too hot -, because of a strike or some technical failure, long list of other reasons.

We live in Blackheath. We, that's my wife Kay, our daughters Susan myself, and our dog Griff. Our house isn't new - in fact, it's 85 years we've still got a heavy mortgage on it. But it's homely, in a quiet road far from the shops and the school. There's a smal garden - just right like us who don't have much time for gardening.

Kay works part-time in a local accountant's office. We don't see much of in the week because I don't get home till about seven and Kay has all activities in the local community. I don't usualy go out in the evenings perhaps to play squash or to have a drink with friends at the pub.
