Dear Mr. North

Thank you very much for your enquiry. We are of course very familiar with your range of vehicles and are pleased to inform you that we have a new line of batteries that fit your specifications exactly.

The most suitable of our products for your requirements is the Artemis 66A Plus. This product combines economy, high power output and quick charging time and is now in stock.

I enclose a detailed quotation, specifications and delivery terms. As you will see from this, our prices are very competitive. I have arranged for our agent Mr. Martin of Fillmore S.A. to deliver five of these batteries to you next week, so that you can carry out the laboratory tests. Our own laboratory reports, enclosed with this letter, show that our new Artemis 66A Plus as well as any of our competitor’s product and, in some respects, outperforms them.

If you would like further information, please telephone us or telex me: my extension number is 776. Or you may prefer to contact Mr. John Martin of Fillmore S.A. in M__ his telephone number is 01 77 99 02.

I look forward to hearing from you.

8. A trial order for 3 Harvesters

Dear Sir,

We thank you for your letter of 5th June enclosing your latest leaflet of the new model of Harvester.

We have decided to place a trial order with you for 3 Harvesters.

As to the delivery date we agree that they should be shipped 2 months after your confirmation of the order. Dispatch and marking instructions will be given by our forwarding agents in London, who will tell you of their changes. Your invoice should include CIF Saint Petersburg, and the amount of our credit is sufficient to cover this and your bank commission.

Please tell us by telex when the machines have been dispatched.

Yours faithfully,

9. Order for Cable.

The Secretary, 16th May, 2004

Brown and Co. Plc,

London

England

Dear Sir,

We thank you for your offer of 15th February for the delivery of cable.

Unfortunately we have to tell you that we find your prices much higher than those of other firms who have made us similar offers.

We could make use of your offer and place our order with you if you reconsider your prices and reduce them at least by 10 per cent. As to other terms and conditions, they are quite acceptable to us.

We are looking forward to your favourable reply.

Yours faithfully,

V/O Raznoimport

  1. Complaints and Claims. Letters of Adjustments

a) Complaints and claims

Mistakes may occur in day-to-day business, and these give cause for complaint. There might have been a misunderstanding about the goods to be supplied; perhaps a warehouse clerk made an error in addressing the parcel; sometimes a consignment is dispatched too late or delays are caused in transit; damage may have occurred during delivery; a manufacturing defect is discovered when a machine is, used. It may happen in business that certain terms and conditions of the Contract are infringed by the Sellers or by the Buyers and then the dissatisfied party makes a claim on the other party. The Buyers most frequently make claims because of late delivery, delivery of wrong or damaged goods, or goods of inferior quality, short-shipment/ delivery of the goods, etc. The Sellers in their turn can make a claim on the Buyers because of unreasonable amounts claimed from them and also when the Buyers fail to open a L/C in time or place a vessel under loading, etc.

Your first letter of complaint should sound calm and reasonable. You will get better and quicker service than if you demand, threaten (угрожать) or accuse (обвинять).

Here are some examples of letters of complaint and claims. Read them and translate into Russian.
