V.

Indirect Statements
X said
this > that; these > those; here > there; now > then; today > that day; yesterday > the day before, on the previous day; tomorrow > the next day; ago > before.
told somebody.
VI.
1. His wife said to him: “I know what you’ve been thinking. I can
read your lips.” 2. “I wish I’d never heard the rumour,” he said honestly. 3. “Money means nothing to me. I want none of the things it can buy,” he said. 4. “Wishing is the useless pastime of the unemployed,” said the second man. 5. He said, “I wish to go into that plaza and speak among the businessmen who gather there nights to talk big talk.” 6. Gomez pointed at Martinez saying, “At last we found our   h volunteer.” 7. He added, “It is hard to break a habit to which one has grown accustomed.” 8. “I will expect you at  ve on Friday this week,” she whispered to him. 9. “I am not in the least hungry,” my guest sighed, “but if
182
you insist I don’t mind having some asparagus.”
10. “Luke,” he
said, “they won’t buy oranges if you don’t smile. People like to see a little boy smiling. It makes them happy.” 11. “I didn’t steal the bicycle,” Ike said, “Mr. York gave it to me for my birthday.” 12. She said, “It’s the dullest book I’ve ever read.”
Indirect Questions
When did he get promotion? — I asked when he had got promotion.
How many languages do you know? — I asked him (her) how many languages he (she) knew.
who или what и в качестве сказуемого содержит глагол to be,
Who is that woman? — (That woman is) Mrs. Brown.
Who is a coward? — This little boy is (a coward).
Who is that woman? — He asked who that woman was.
183
Who is a coward? — He asked who was a coward.
Have you been to London? — I asked if (whether) he (she) had been to London.
сложным союзом whether ... or:
Are you here on business or on holiday? — I asked whether he (she) was there on business or on holiday.
мой порядок слов;
употребляется в прошедшем времени;
имения;
VII.
1. “Does anything interesting happen in your town?” she asked.
2. “Will you have lime juice or lemon squash?” Macomber asked
him. 3. “What’s the use to be alive when everything is rotten and nobody knows what to do?” he asked. 4. “What’s wrong with you? Are you angry with me?” I asked. 5. “Will you stay here or would you like to go to your dressing room?” said Syd. 6. “Do you
184
remember the  rst time I saw you?” she addressed me brightly.
7. “How can I thank you for what you’ve done for me?” she asked
me.

stay here a little longer or is it so important for you to leave right now?” policeman. I asked her. old is she?”
9. “Who has been a witness of the accident?” asked a
10. “Why did you choose him rather than my friend?”
11. Fred asked me, “What does she look like and how
12. “What are you going to do, Isabel?” I asked then.
Indirect Advice, Request and Command
to ask, to order или to tell (велеть):
She said to me. “You had better give up smoking otherwise you will have health problems.” — She advised me to give up smoking adding that otherwise I would have health problems.
He said, “Could you lend me a hundred dollars till Friday?” — He asked me to lend him a hundred dollars till Friday.

Stunt Artists
 e next time you are watching a  lm and you see one of the characters jumping out of a plane, falling o a horse, or being blown through a window — spare a thought for a stunt artist. Lots of people think that stunt artists are just “extras” who play small, unimportant parts in  lms and television. Nothing could be further from the truth.
A stunt artist must combine skills of an actor with the physical abilities of  rst-class athlete. He or she must be extremely  t and highly trained in a number of activities like scuba diving, horse riding, martial arts or parachuting.
It is not easy to get started in a career of a stunt performer. Film and television producers look for experience and proven ability, so it is unlikely that they will take on a complete newcomer. However, because of the nature of their profession, stunt artists tend to retire early.  is means that new performers must be employed, or there will be no one to take over when the present generation quits.
Even when a stunt artist becomes well-known, the work is not regular. It may sometimes be necessary to travel to the other side of the world for a job which involves long hours and great physical danger. It is not a glamorous occupation either. Unlike the famous actors for whom they sometimes risk their lives, few stunt artists are recognised in the street by adoring fans.
