Conventional and Natural Medicine
Medical science has made enormous advances in the twentieth century. Most of the great “killer” diseases have been defeated, and almost every day a new drug appears on the market. But the medical profession is experiencing a crisis of con dence. Surveys indicate that less than 40% of people really trust their family doctor. People are coming away from conventional medicine to look for alternative forms of treatment.
 e main reason for this is that conventional medicine has failed to satisfy the needs of the majority of people. In spite of the apparent progress made by medical science, we are actually less healthy than our parents or grandparents.
Medical students are taught that diseases are caused by germs, viruses and toxins.  erefore treatment must concentrate on attacking these things.  e mind and the emotions are not thought to play any part in the disease process. But people who practise “natural” medicine disagree with this principle, and try to treat the whole person.  ey believe that personality and lifestyle are important when considering a patient’s general health.
115
Some conventional doctors are beginning to recognise that there is a lot of truth in these ideas, and believe that natural medicine can be a valuable aid. Others still regard it is a dangerous threat to their profession.

НЕОПРЕДЕЛЁННЫЕ МЕСТОИМЕНИЯ SOME, ANY, NO И ИХ ПРОИЗВОДНЫЕ THE INDEFINITE PRONOUNS SOME, ANY, NO AND THEIR DERIVATIVES
some subjects — несколько предметов (изучаемых в учебных заведениях), некоторые предметы; some students — несколько студентов, некоторые студенты; some sugar — сахар (некоторое количество его); some water — вода (некоторое количество её).
ся местоимение any:
I found some interesting books on the shelves. Did the fi lm get any prize at the festival? The Millers don’t have any children.
The Millers have no children.

Would you like some juice? Can I have some of these sweets?
Have you got some bad news? (Judging by the expression of your face I can say that you have and I expect to hear “yes” from you.)
You can choose any book you like.
