Isaac Newton
Sir Isaac Newton, the English scientist and mathematician, was
one of the most important gures of the 17th century scienti c
revolution. One of his greatest achievements was the discovery
of the three laws of motion, which are still used today. But he also
had a very unusual personality. Some people would say he was
actually insane.
His father died before he was born, and his mother soon
remarried. e young Isaac hated his stepfather so much that he
once threatened to burn his house down — when his stepfather
and mother were still inside! Fortunately he did not, and he went
to graduate from Cambridge without being thrown into prison.
Isaac’s rst published work was a theory of light and colour.
When another scientist wrote a paper criticising this theory,
Isaac ew into an uncontrollable rage. e scientist responsible
for the criticism was a man called Robert Hooke. He was head of
the Royal Society, and one of the most respected scientists in the
country. However, this made no di erence to Isaac, who refused
to speak to him for over a year.
e simple fact was that Isaac found it impossible to have a
calm discussion with anyone. As soon as someone said something
that he disagreed with, he would lose his temper. For this reason
he lived a large part of his life isolated from other scientists. It is
unlikely that many of them complained.

ONE (ONES), THAT (THOSE)
THE PRONOUNS ONE (ONES), THAT (THOSE)
AS SUBSTITUTES FOR A NOUN
The Demonstrative Pronoun that (those)
as Substitute for a Noun
I don’t like this skirt. Could you show me another one
(another skirt)?
His car is a blue one.
It’s a good fi lm, but the last one was better.
125

I like my old jeans better than the new ones.
They (these people) are the ones who suffered greatly.
I have only one sister, but my friend has two (not ones).
The boy is the most unpredictable (not one)
in the whole class.
сле прилагательного own:
This isn’t your picture, this is my own (not one).
IV.
1. I had rather be hissed for a good verse than applauded for a

you like? — e one that matches my jacket. 8. I like this picture

Указательное местоимение that (those)
The Demonstrative Pronoun that (those)

That (those) как заместитель существительного
и синонимично местоименному заменителю the one (the ones):
His manners were those (the ones) of an uneducated man.
The work differed from that (the one) we were accustomed
to doing previously.
