Fractions
Many fractions will be restricted to scientific usage, with whole numbers conveyed by cardinals (optionally accompanied by the appropriate form of the adjective ціла (частина 'part' understood)) and the fractional part conveyed by the appropriate ordinal preceded by the number of fractional parts. For single fractional parts the ordinal will qualify частина, and a number consisting of a whole number or numbers and a fraction will be linked by і 'and'. For example:
одна і п'ять шостих
one and five sixths
Я вже знаю десяту частину того, що треба знати.
І already know a tenth of what I need to.
одна ціла і дві десятих мільйона квадратних кілометрів
1.3 million square kilometres
Чотири п'ятих поділити на одну сьому.
Divide four fifths by one seventh (imperfective поділяти).
Сім десятих помножити на три дев'ятих.
Multiply seven tenths by three ninths (imperfective множити).
The numerals пів 'half, півтора (m./n.) and півтори (f.) 'one-and-a-half, and півтораста '150' are indeclinable. They all totally agree with the counted noun phrase when the dative, instrumental, and locative are required. For the nominative, accusative, and genitive, пів and півтора/півтори are followed by the genitive singular, while півтораста is followed by the genitive plural. Animacy is unlikely to affect пів and півтора/півтори, and for півтораста the accusative and genitive formally coincide. Thus, for example:
півтора/півтори, півтораста
N.A. півтора слова півтори книжки півтораста столів Н.З.
G. півтора слова півтори книжки півтораста столів Р.
D. півтора словам півтори книжкам півтораста столам Д.
І. півтора словами півтори книжками півтораста столами О.
L. у півтора словах у півтори книжках на півтораста столах М.
One must note the fractional nouns чверть (f.) 'quarter' and половина 'half, 'middle', the adverb навпіл 'in half. In the following examples note how one says 'and a half, and a quarter', these components never changing. For example:
Вона дала мені чверть книжок.
She gave me a quarter of the books.
сім із чвертю років
seven and a quarter years
дві з половиною години
two and a half hours
за чверть восьма
(at) a quarter to eight
(the hour goes in the nominative of the ordinal, with година 'hour' understood)
(о) чверть по четвертій
(at) a quarter past four (o is optional in rendering 'at', годині understood)
(о) пів до сьомої/на сьому
(at) half past six (o is optional in rendering 'at', години/годину understood)
пів на пів
fifty-fifty
Ще пів біди.
That's not too bad.
Hi пів слова!
Not a word!
Indefinite quantifiers
багато 'much/many', небагато 'not much', 'not many', кілька 'some', 'several', 'a few', and декілька 'some', 'several', 'a few' decline as follows:
N. багато кілька декілька Н.
G. багатьох кількох декількох Р.
D. багатьом кільком декільком Д.
А. = nom. or gen. = nom. or gen. = nom. or gen. 3.
І. багатьма кількома декількома О.
L. багатьох кількох декількох М.
Note that their declension is similar to that of п'ять, but without parallel forms. Observe the stress, including optional stress, in particular кільканадцять 'eleven to nineteen' and кількадесят 'several tens'; 'thirty' or 'forty' (both colloquial) decline like десять (one may come across the form кількадесять), but note the stress:
N. кільканадцять кількадесят Н.
G. кільканадцяти or кільканадцятьох кількадесяти or десятьох P.
D. кільканадцяти or кільканадцятьом -десяти or -десятьом Д.
А. = nom. or gen. = nom. or gen. 3
І. кільканадцятьма or кільканадцятьома -десятьма or -десятьома О.
L. кільканадцяти or кільканадцятьох -десяти or -десятьох М.
One may also come across кількасот 'several hundred' and стонадцять 'over a hundred'. They decline as follows:
N. кількасот стонадцять Н.
G. кількасот стонадцяти or стонадцятьох P.
D. кількастам стонадцяти or стонадцятьом Д.
А. = nom. or gen. = nom. or gen. 3.
І. кількастома стонадцятьма or стонадцятьома О.
L. кількастах стонадцяти or стонадцятьох М.
All the above behave in the same way. In the nominative and inanimate accusative they are constructed with the genitive plural (or genitive singular if appropriate for (не)багато). In all the other cases they and the counted noun phrase go m the appropriate case, with the numeral as it were agreeing with the noun phrase.
Like пів 'half, and so on, (не)мало 'little' and чимало 'rather a lot', 'a considerable amount' do not decline, but will tend only to be used with the genitive singular or plural, as appropriate, in the nominative and inanimate accusative. Where other cases are required, (не)багато may be used. Like (не)багато they may be used as adverbs, for example, мало працювати 'to work little'. One may note also the adverbs трошки, трошечки 'a little'.
'Majority', 'most' might be conveyed using the noun більшість, gen. більшості, with the genitive of the noun phrase. With a quantifier phrase including більшість as subject, a verb will be singular and, if past or conditional, feminine:
Більшість туристів була в готелі «Дніпро».
Most of the tourists were in the hotel Dmepro.
Used similarly would be сотня 'a hundred' (quite common in the plural), and двійка 'the number two', 'two points/marks', 'two people together' (двійками 'in twos'), трійка 'the number three', 'three points/marks', 'three people together' (трійками 'in threes', утрійку 'three together').
We might take this opportunity to mention numerical adverbs such as раз, двічі, тричі 'once', 'twice', 'three times'; beyond this one can just use the cardinal plus раз, for example, п'ять раз 'five times'. 'Once' m the sense of 'formerly', 'once upon a time', would be колись; 'not a single time' would be ані разу (numerical adverbs). One can also create verbs from numerals, for example потроїти, imperf. потроювати 'to treble', 'triplicate'.
