Adjectives constructed with prepositional phrases
Or the adjective can be linked, as in English, with an explicit preposition, the preposition in turn governing a particular case - from the meanings of the following examples, by no means exhaustive, it will be clear that some are productive (usable with any semantically appropriate noun or noun phrase), while others are set expressions.
Genitive
Adjective + до + genitive:
байдужий до прохань indifferent to requests
беручкий до роботи/всього assiduous in/inclined to work
близький до оригіналу close to the original
ввічливий до дітей considerate to children
вимогливий до себе demanding on himself
готовий до випробувань ready for testing/experiments
заборонений до ввезення prohibited for import
здатний до роботи capable of work
ладен/ладний до п'єси keen on the play
охочий до казок keen on fairy tales
придатний до використання fit for/good for use/utilization
привітний до друзів kind to friends
уважний/уважливий до людей attentive to people
мокрий до нитки soaked to the skin
смілий/сміливий до безмежності infinitely courageous
схильний до праці inclined to (the) work
The last two but one are really a set and an adverbial expression respectively.
Adjective + від + genitive:
далекий від розуміння far from understanding
протилежний від сонця opposite the sun
блідий від перевтоми pale with exhaustion
мокрий від дощу wet with rain
солодший від меду sweeter than honey
старший від брата older than his brother
The last two are examples of comparison.
Adjective + для + genitive:
близький для читача close for the reader (= comprehensible)
важкий для розуміння important for comprehension
дорогий для друзів dear for friends
знайомий для учнів familiar to the pupils
корисний для людини useful to man/a person
придатний для аналізу suitable for, capable of, analysis
старанний для людей attentive to people
шкідливий для організму damaging to the organism
Almost all constructions involving для are synonymous with constructions of the type 'adjective + dative', for example, знайомий учням, корисний людині.
Adjective + з + genitive:
радий з успіхів overjoyed with the success
найвищий з хлопців the tallest of the boys
найтепліше з морів the warmest of (the) seas
The last two demonstrate superlative constructions.
Accusative
Adjective + за + accusative:
відповідальний за роботу responsible for the work
певний за людей sure of the people
радий за дітей pleased for the children
Adjective + на + accusative:
згоден на пропозицію agree(d) to a proposal
здатний на подвиг capable of, fit to achieve a feat
хворий на грип ill with the flu
видний на всі боки visible on/from all sides
відомий на всю республіку known/famous throughout the republic
вищий на метр higher by a metre
старший на рік a/one year older
невеликий на зріст small of stature/in height
терпкий на смак sour/bitter/tart in taste
схожий на батька similar to (his/her . . .) father
бридкий на дотик repugnant to the touch
