Tag questions

I'll be going through the Customs before the flight, won't I?

- Yes, you will. / No, you won't.

You'll be seeing her tomorrow at the weekly sales conference, won't you?

- Yes, I will. / No, I won't.

He/She/It'll be sailing to Greece for the next two weeks, won't he/she/it?

- Yes, he/she/it will. / No, he/she/it won't.

We'll be swimming in the Mediterranean in a week, won't we?

- Yes, we will. / No, we won't

They'll be enjoying themselves at the seaside, won't they?

- Yes, they will. / No, they won't.

I won't be doing anything wrong, will I?

- No, you won't. / Yes, you will.

You won't be testing the new system tomorrow, will you?

- No, I won't. / Yes, I will.

He/She/It won't be moving in that direction, will he/she/it?

- No, he/she/it won't. / Yes, he/she/ it will.

We won't be dancing too much in the disco, will we?

They won't be celebrating their wedding anniversary without their parents, will they?

NOTE:

a) will not (won't) is used with all persons (I, you, we, they, etc.);

b) shall not (shan't) is used instead of will not (won't) with I or we, but in everyday speech, will not (won't) is more common.

Exercise 22. Add the correct tag to these sentences.

• a future action in progress

I'll be working on Monday.

• a future fact

I'll go to work on Monday.

• a planned future action

I can't see him at 12 o'clock. I'll be having lunch.

• a sudden decision

- I'll be free in an hour.

- Fine. We'll have lunch together.

• with sense verbs to express an action, e.g. to see (= to meet)

I'll be seeing her tomorrow at the annual conference.

• with sense verbs and other verbs not used in the Continuous Tense

Don't buy this coat. You'll look awful in it.

Exercise 23. Complete the sentences with the correct tense of the verbs in brackets. Use the Future Simple or the Future Continuous Tense.

Example: I _ (see) them tomorrow. - I _ (tell) them the news. I'll be seeing them tomorrow. - I'll tell them the news.

1. Mr Harter is going to stay in the office tomorrow. So at 7 p.m. he still _ (work).
