Among the European cities London seems tobe one ofthe
most visited places. Being about two thousand years old, itoffers tourists acaptivating journey through centuries ofhistory.
Nowadays it has become the leading tourist destination in the
world and in2015 was ranked asthe most visited city with over
65million visits. Nowonder tourism isone ofLondon’s prime
industries.
In London there are four World Heritage Sites which are under the auspices ofUNESCO. ese are 1)the Tower ofLondon,
2)Kew Gardens, 3)the site comprising the Palace ofWestminster,
Westminster Abbey, and St. Margaret’s Church, 4)and the historic
settlement ofGreenwich inwhich the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, denes the Prime Meridian, Oº longitude, and GMT.
e Tower ofLondon, one ofthe main landmarks ofthe city,
isthe rst of many Norman castles inEngland. Itwas founded
onthe North bank ofthe River ames incentral London atthe
end of1066 aspart ofthe Norman conquest ofEngland. e White
Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built byWilliam the Conqueror in1078 and was a resented symbol ofoppression. e castle was used asaprison from 1100 until 1952,

For sixty years the Tower was kept as a menagerie of wild and
exotic animals — gis that the King or Queen were donated
bytheir visitors and admirers. Among them the famous ravens

ifthe six ravens ever leave the Tower, the Court and the Tower

Another World Heritage Site isthe Royal Botanic Gardens,
