ENGLISH ASTHE INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE 101
in helpless confusion. Hence there must be no arbitrariness
inwhat issaid. is matters above everything. (Confucius)—
How doyou understand the quotation byBernard Shaw “England
and America are two countries separated bythe same language”?
Do you agree with the words said byConfucius about language?

MAKING ACAREER
THE JOBS WECHOOSE
When wewere children, we dreamt about professions and
jobs that inour opinion were connected with risk, danger and fantastic consequences. Wecould not imagine our life without bright
colours orexcitement. Nobody wanted toperform aroutine job
being included in a monotonous process. Aquiet position like
that ofalibrarian, anaccountant, aneconomist oranurse could
hardly beof any interest tous. Nothing ofthe kind! Onthe contrary, areman, apoliceman, a pilot, anastronaut, astuntman
were professions that excited the teenagers’ imagination.
In the course of time our concept of what an appropriate profession isradically changed. Scientic and technological
progress atthe beginning ofthe 21
for new jobs which required relevant skills and qualications.
With the development of economic relationships between nations a lot of companies doing business with foreign partners
were set upin our country, some ofthem having the headquarters abroad. ese contacts stimulated appearing new jobs. us
many home businessmen, managers and sales managers, business executives, developers were involved inthe economic process ofmarket economy.
Young people met this innovation with enthusiasm and willingly started their own business. ough there are plenty ofgood
things about this position such asawell-paid job, achance oftravelling alot, people’s respect, this duty lays great responsibilities

onyou. To be successful in this sphere you should possess certain skills and qualities. For example, tobe abusiness executive
you have tobe hard-working and you have toget along well with
people toprovide agood environment inthe company. You also
have tobe patient and persuasive, since doing business isall about
getting people tosee things your way. Besides, you must possess
alot ofskills: interpersonal skills, language skills, computer skills,
nancial and managerial skills, toname just afew. So, ifyou lack
one ofthese, you will never succeed.
Of course, creative jobs such as those of actors, artists,
TV presenters, and journalists are also popular. ey seem attractive to people who like to be and are not afraid of being
in
the public eye. Choosing acareer youngsters sometimes follow
intheir pa rents’ steps. ey traditionally work asdoctors, teach
ers, musicians continuing the professional line of their family
which isreferred toas hereditary.
Today young people are more ambitious than before. ey
dream about challenging and rewarding jobs and occupations.
According to the survey conducted in several big cities, some
bright and condent teenagers donot conceal their wish tobecome President ofRussia. ey dotheir best tosucceed inlearning school subjects aswell asin extracurricular activity. Itis very
interesting tocompare the ambitions ofRussian teenagers with
the results ofthe survey in the United Kingdom. When British
people were asked what their dream jobs were, nursing and teaching were found atthe top ofthe list; working asajournalist and
becoming the Prime Minister were also high onthe list. Choosing
career nowadays people become more exible and practical. ey
are not going any more tostay inone workplace upto their retirement, getting aguaranteed salary. ey are even not afraid tobe
out ofajob for some time ifthey have achance ofnding awellpaid satisfying job later.

104 MAKING ACAREER
It isquite natural that teenagers want tobecome white-collar
workers and prefer creative occupations. ey can consider an“ordinary” workplace only for ashort time. So, many young people
start their working career with jobs that are not con sidered tobe
creative ordo not require any intellectual ability. ey work inthe
service sector: incafés, restaurants— or they perform the duty
ofacourier delivering dierent goods tothe customers bytheir
order. In this way they gain their initial work experience. Later
most ofthem get inthe University and graduate from itwith adegree, which provides them achallenging career infuture.
However, nosociety can exist without the so-called “blue collars”— the workers who have todo very hard jobs applying physical labour insuch places as plants, factories, mines, etc. Bythe
way, this work also requires a lot of practical skills and needs
tobe professionally done. Nowadays builders, smiths, carpenters,
plumbers, electricians, and the like are ingreat demand. ough
their job isnot creative, itnevertheless requires alot ofskills and
special knowledge. Because ofacertain decit for ofthe professions, sometimes these workers are better-paid than employees
ofthe service oreducational spheres.
Summing up, choosing acareer people mainly rely ontheir
vocation, but, though money does not make ushappy, they nevertheless prefer well-paid jobs and ifpossible donot refuse bonuses,
perks, and other free services.
