COMMUTING 35
Remember the rules how touse prepositions with the names oftransport means:
С названиями транспортных средств используются сле-
дующие предлоги: by, onиin.
д. При этом усуществительного спредлогом byотсутствуют другие определители— артикли ипритяжательные местоимения: bytrain, bycar, by taxi, by bus, by tram, by bicycle, by plane, by helicopter, by ship (ноon foot). Это правило остается в силе, если вместо названного транспортного средства употребляются иханалоги, фиксирующие внимание не на объекте передвижения, ана пространстве, вкотором происходит движение: byrail, byland, byair, bysea.
Предлоги onиin используются, когда мыговорим онахождении внутри транспортного средства. Вэтом значении inупотребляется только применительно ксуществительным car иtaxi. Остальные существительные созначением транспортного средства употребляются с предлогом on. В этом случае, наряду с предлогом, обязательно используется артикль или притяжательное местоимение: ona(the, our) train, ona(the, my) bus, ona(the, their) plane, ona, (the, my) bicycle, on a (the, his) boat, ona (the, their) horse, in a (the, my) car, ina(the, our) taxi.

Read the following sentences and explain the rule for using the prepositions:
1. Ilike totravel bytrain even ifthe journey lasts for many days.
2. Ihave never gone there onan intercity coach.
3. Iusually goto work bycar, but today I’ll have tocommute bybus asmy car needs repairing.
4. Ifyou are inahurry, Ican give you ali inmy car.
5. When you are ina taxi, remember tofasten your seat belt toavoid being injured during atrac accident.
6. Wehad togo tothe theatre bytaxi inorder not tobe late for the performance.
7. e fastest way from London toGlasgow isby air.
8. Wewent tothe USA onajumbo jet.
9. Travelling by train is more expensive than going in your owncar.
10. Nothing compares tothe simple pleasure ofriding onabike!
11. Ilove public transportation! Who wants tosit ina car and beangry with other drivers who are very slow and careless? I’d rather sit onabus ortrain and read abook.
CARPOOLING
People, who have tocommute regularly, experience cer-
tain difficulties with getting to and from work. They either risk their lives onthe overcrowded motorways orwaste precious time on the ineffective public transport system. It is quite evident that there might bean alternative tothe existing way ofcommuting. And inGreat Britain they have found it.
CARPOOLING 37
This iscarpooling, arelatively new, convenient way ofgetting towork.
Carpooling is a way of commuting when agroup ofcar owners agree totravel together towork, college, University, etc. sothat only one car isused each time. e commuters inthis case are called carpoolers. is way ofcommuting isless stressful than taking abus ortrain, besides you save time and money.
Carpooling iseective when used with some colleagues from work. Each ofthem has their own car and they arrange toshare one private car toget towork orcollege. Onthe exact day ofthe week, one ofthe co-workers ofthe group issupposed togive ali inhis car tothe other colleagues who le their cars athome, and sothey become passengers. en, the next day one ofthe former passengers works asadriver using his (or her) own car. Inthis way you win economically because you have tospend less money onpetrol and servicing your car.
Carpooling also contributes much tosolving environmental problems. Firstly, with this way ofcommuting the number ofcars on the roads considerably decreases. is results favourably inboth the entire trac situation including congestion and the risk ofaccidents and the environment which becomes less polluted. Secondly, the fact that fewer cars are used onthe roads reduces the volume ofnoise.
