and some land animals such assnails, frogs, etc.? Can you nd any rea-

Here are some quotations about vegetarianism:
Animals are my friends… and I don’t eat my friends.
(George Bernard Shaw)—
It ismy view that the vegetarian manner ofliving, byits
pure physical effect on the human temperament, would
most beneficially influence the lot ofmankind. (Albert Ein-
stein)—
Non-violence leads tothe highest ethics, which isthe goal
ofall evolution. Until westop harming all other living beings,
weare still savages. (omas A. Edison)—
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, the whole world would
bevegetarian. (Linda McCartney)—

VEGETARIANISM 303

health ofthe chickens. (Isaac Bashevis-Singer)—
People oen say that humans have always eaten animals,
asif this is a justication for continuing the practice. According tothis logic, we should not try to prevent people from
murdering other people since this has also been done since the
earliest oftimes. (Isaac Bashevis Singer)—
e thought that two thousand people are crunching celery
atthe same time horried me. (George Bernard Shaw)—
e beef industry has contributed to more American
deaths than all the wars ofthis century, all natural disasters, and
all automobile accidents combined. Ifbeef isyour idea of“real
food for real people”, you’ve better live real close toareal good
hospital. (Neal D. Barnard)—

304 EATING HABITS
We are quite literally gambling with the future ofour pla-
net— for the sake ofhamburgers. (Peter Singer)—
A man can live and behealthy without killing animals for
food; therefore, ifhe eats meat, heparticipates intaking animal
life merely for the sake ofhis appetite. And toact sois immoral.
(Leo Tolstoy)—
