Unit 4 convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women

For the purposes of the present Convention, the term "discrimination against women"(1) shall mean any distinction, exclusion orrestriction made on the basis of sex(2) which has the effect or purpose ofimpairing(3) or nullifying the recognition(4), enjoyment or exercise by women, irrespective of theirmarital status(5), on a basis of equality of men and women, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural, civil or any other field.

States Parties shall take in all fields, in particular in the political, social, economic and cultural fields, all appropriate measures, including legislation, to en sure the full development (6) andadvancement (7) of women, for the purpose of guaranteeing them the exercise and enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms on a basis of equality with men.

States Parties shall take all appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against women in the political and public life of the country and, in particular, shall ensure to women, on equal terms with men, the right:

to vote in all elections andpublic referenda(8) andto be eligible for election (9) to all publicly elected bodies(10);to participate in theformulation (11) of government policy(12) and theimplementation(13) thereof andto hold public office(14) and perform allpublic functions(15) at all levels ofgovernment (16);

to participate innon-governmental organizations (17) andassociations(18) concerned with the public and political life of the country.

1. States Parties shall take all appropriate measures to ensure to women, on equal terms with men and without any discrimination, the opportunity to represent their Governments at the international level and to participate in the work of international organizations.

A. Брати участь у формулюванні та здійсненні політики уряду та обіймати державні посади, а також здійснювати всі державні функції на всіх рівнях державного управління. Брати участь у діяльності неурядових організацій і об’єднань, що займаються проблемами громадського та політичного життя країни.

2. For the purposes of the present Convention, the term "discrimination against women" shall mean any distinction, exclusion or restriction made on the basis of sex which has the effect or purpose of impairing or nullifying the recognition, enjoyment or exercise by women, irrespective of their marital status, on a basis of equality of men and women, of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

B. Держави-учасницівживають в усіх галузях, і зокрема в політичній, соціальній, економічній і культурній, всіх відповідних заходів, включаючи законодавчі, щодо забезпечення всебічного розвитку та прогресу жінок, з тим щоб гарантувати їм реалізацію і користування правами людини та основними свободами на основі рівності з чоловіками.

3. States Parties shall take in all fields, in particular in the political, social, economic and cultural fields, all appropriate measures, including legislation, to ensure the full development and advancement of women, for the purpose of guaranteeing them the exercise and enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms on a basis of equality with men.

C. У цій Конвенції поняття "дискримінація жінок" означає будь-яке викоремлення, виключення або обмеження за ознакою статі, спрямовані на зменшення чи зведення нанівець визнання, користування або реалізацію жінками, незалежно від їхнього сімейного стану, на основі рівноправності чоловіків і жінок, прав людини та основних свобод.

4. States Parties shall take all appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against women in the political and public life of the country and, in particular, shall ensure to women, on equal terms with men, the right: To vote in all elections and public referenda and to be eligible for election to all publicly elected bodies.

D. Держави-учасниці вживають усіх відповідних заходів, щоб забезпечити жінкам можливість на рівних умовах з чоловіками і без будь-якої дискримінації представляти свої уряди на міжнародному рівні і брати участь у роботі міжнародних організацій.

5. To participate in the formulation of government policy and the implementation thereof and to hold public office and perform all public functions at all levels of government. To participate in non-governmental organizations and associations concerned with the public and political life of the country.

E. Держави-учасниці вживають усіх відповідних заходів для ліквідації дискримінації жінок у політичному та суспільному житті країни і, зокрема, забезпечують жінкам на рівних умовах з чоловіками право: голосувати на всіх виборах і народних референдумах та бути обраними до всіх державних виборних органів.
