Godwine and his sons for defying royal authority, but Harold led the forces that in 1052 invaded England and forced the king to restore the family.
3. Upon Godwine’s death in 1053, Harold succeeded to his father’s earldoms and be came the chief power in the land. By 1057 he had obtained earldoms for his three brothers, Tostig, Gyrth, and Leofwine. His only rival was the house of Leofric of Mercia. Leofric’s outlawed son, Aelfgar, raided Mercia with help from the Welsh, and in retaliation Harold and Tostig subjugated Wales in 1063. In 1065 the North umbrians revolted against.
4. Tostig, their earl, Bowing to rebel demands, Harold gave Tostig’s earldom to Mor car of the house of Mercia, but by doing so he made Tostig his bitterest enemy. Nev ertheless, Harold’s position remained unshaken.
5. On his deathbed Edward the Confessor had supposedly designated Harold the royal heir. Earlier, Edward had, however, promised the crown to William, Duke of Nor mandy. Moreover, Harold himself, when shipwrecked on the coast of Normandy, had been forced to promise to support William’s claim. Hence, when Harold assumed power on the death of Edward (Jan. 5, 1066), he was immediately threatened with the rivalry of William and another royal claimant, Harold III Hardraade, king of Nor way, as well as with the enmity of Tostig. In May, Harold mobilized his fleet and army against an expected invasion by William. Instead, he had to use his forces to repel To stig’s raids on the south and east coasts of England. He dismissed his men in early September because he had run short of supplies. Thus, William was free to cross the English Channel unopposed. Tostig and Harald III Hardraade joined forces and in vaded England in that month, but they were defeated and killed by Harold at Stam ford Bridge, near York, on September 25. Three days later William landed in Eng land. Harold attacked him near Hastings on October 14, and in an allday battle the king, Gyrth, and Leofwine were killed. The accession of William to the English throne as King William I ended the AngloSaxon phase of English history.

На пример: to write (писать) — to rewrite (переписывать) kind (добрый) — unkind (злой)
Например: to work (глагол) — work (существи тельное).
Например, to protest [`pro`test] — the protest [`protest]
Например, to use [ju:z] пользоваться use [ju:s] польза

2. eldest son —
4. in northern Scotland —
5. His followers —
6. unsuccessfully attempted —
8. of lawful kings —
9. with assistance from the English —
10. part of southern Scotland —

1. Macbeth (d. Aug. 15, 1057, near Lumphanan, Aberdeen, Scot.), king of Scots from 1040, the legend of whose life was the basis of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. He was probably a grand son of King Kenneth II (ruled 971995), and he married Gruoch, a descendant of King Kenneth III (ruled 9971005). About 1031 Macbeth succeeded his father, Findlaech (Si nel in Shakespeare), as mormaer, or chief, in the province of Moray, in northern Scot land. Macbeth established himself on the throne after killing his cousin King Duncan I in battle near Elginnot, as in Shakespeare, by murdering Duncan in bed — on Aug. 14, 1040. Both Duncan and Macbeth derived their rights to the crown through their mothers.
2. Macbeth’s victory in 1045 over a rebel army, near Dunkeld (in modern Tayside re gion) may account for the later references (in Shakespeare and others) to Birnam Wood, for the village of Birnam is near Dunkeld. In 1046 Siward, Earl of North umbria, unsuccessfully attempted to dethrone Macbeth in favour of Malcolm (af terward King Malcolm III Canmore), eldest son of Duncan I. By 1050 Macbeth felt secure enough to leave Scotland for a pilgrimage to Rome. But in 1054 he was ap parently forced by Siward to yield part of southern Scotland to Malcolm. Three years later Macbeth was killed in battle by Malcolm, with assistance from the English.
3. Macbeth was buried on the island of Iona, regarded as the resting place of lawful kings but not of usurpers. His followers installed his stepson, Lulach, as king; when Lulach was killed on March 17, 1058, Malcolm III was left supreme in Scotland.
