§1. (To) Award [ə’wɔːd]
1) Официальная награда, приз, премия (за заслуги или достиже-
ния). Award вручают в публичной обстановке на основании голо- сования, решения судей или жюри за победу в конкурсе или номи­нации. Решение о награде принимается коллегиально. Наградой мо­жет быть медаль, памятный значок, статуэтка, грамота, сертификат, стипендия или денежный грант. Самые известные награды такого рода – это Нобелевская премия или кинопремия «Оскар»:

1) Награда, премия, денежное вознаграждение. Это то, что один
человек хочет дать другому за хорошую работу или за благородный поступок. Это не требует официальной обстановки или жюри. Мож­но поощрить и себя, любимого, приятной мелочью:
• There is a reward for the information about the stolen painting. – За информацию об украденной картине предложено возна­граждение.
2) To reward в значении ‘награждать, давать награду или денеж-
ное вознаграждение’ сохраняет все смыслы своего существительного:

To beat в значении ‘побеждать, обыгрывать, выигрывать, одер-
жать верх’ относится к бытовой и спортивной лексике. To beat обо­значает, что игрок, кандидат или команда набрали больше очков или голосов и победили в игре, в соревнованиях или на выборах:

Значение к рассмотрению: бить. Русский глагол ‘бить’, в от­личие от заявленных английских глаголов, не различает многократ­ность и однократность удара.
